Casa Mariposa Blanca or House of the White Butterfly was once part of the XVI century Franciscan monastery of the Cathedral of Cuernavaca. Many original features of the colonial times are present in this house, from stone floors, stairs, niches, tiles, doors and chimneys. Family Treviño (present owners) have maintained the charm of this house by furnishing it with typical Mexican furniture, handicrafts, paintings, talavera tiles, antiques and lots of flower pots and greenery.
A few curious (website hidden) about this house are: the actor John Wayne lived in this house for a while in the early 1940’s. This house has been an inspirational retreat home for many national and international painters, sculptors (such as Victor Contreras), designers and specially writers. It is said amongst the local people of the town that there is a treasure hidden in the house from the time of the Revolution in 1910. Well, well, I haven’t found any gold so far!; However, I do remember the newspaper article that mentioned the discovery of a tunnel coming from the cathedral and the many gun rifles, ammunition and coins that were found inside dating from the early 1900’s.
Casa Mariposa Blanca is available to rent all year round. You may wish to stay a few days along your journey through other cities in Mexico, decide to stay longer if you are studying Spanish or to enjoy a few days of sunshine, culture and Cuernavaca’s allure.
