Description

The Space

Casa Mariposa Blanca or House of the White Butterfly was once part of the XVI century Franciscan monastery of the Cathedral of Cuernavaca. Many original features of the colonial times are present in this house, from stone floors, stairs, niches, tiles, doors and chimneys. Family Treviño (present owners) have maintained the charm of this house by furnishing it with typical Mexican furniture, handicrafts, paintings, talavera tiles, antiques and lots of flower pots and greenery.
A few curious (URL HIDDEN) about this house are: the actor John Wayne lived in this house for a while in the early 1940's. This house has been an inspirational retreat home for many national and international painters, sculptors (such as Victor Contreras), designers and specially writers. It is said amongst the local people of the town that there is a treasure hidden in the house from the time of the Revolution in 1910. Well, well, I haven't found any gold so far!; However, I do remember the newspaper article that mentioned the discovery of a tunnel coming from the cathedral and the many gun rifles, ammunition and coins that were found inside dating from the early 1900's.
Casa Mariposa Blanca is available to rent all year round. You may wish to stay a few days along your journey through other cities in Mexico, decide to stay longer if you are studying Spanish or to enjoy a few days of sunshine, culture and Cuernavaca's allure.

The Neighborhood

The house is located right in the middle of the historic centre of Cuernavaca on a small cobbled street, recently renamed after a local painter: Calle “Jorge Cazares". The house faces south and is in between of the Bishop's residence and the well-known Brady Museum or Casa de la Torre (the old observatory of the XVI century Cathedral). In front of the house is a small park called: Jardin Revolucion and behind the house is the Cathedral. Most cultural attractions of downtown Cuernavaca are just a few steps away, such as: XVI century Cathedral and the group of old churches, Brady Museum (our neighbor), Cortez Palace, Museum of Cuahunahuac, Cuernavaca City Museum, Borda Gardens, Zocalo or Main Square. There are art galleries such as: Casona de Spencer, Centro Morelense de las Artes and plenty of restaurants, shops, handicraft markets and cafes nearby. There is a large supermarket called: MEGA two blocks away, walking down avenue Morelos. There is also a small bus station one block away (corner of Nezahualcoyotl and Abasolo) this bus station is called Pullman Centro and has services to Mexico City's southern bus station: Tasqueña and also has services to the archeological site of Xochicalco.

Getting Around

All downtown activities are just a few steps away.
