We work from home and can usually be found in our offices doing animation, illustration, making ipad/iphone apps or tiki mugs and tiles! We live on a cul-de-sac amongst a neighborhood of working families with children and pets in single family homes. Become a part of the real Hawaii and live like the locals do.
We have 1 dog that is not allowed in the Kailua Coconut or the back yard when guests are present. We respect your privacy and ask that you respect our neighbors as well.

Note: We are a working ceramic studio and we do fire our pieces in our kiln here on property. When we do a firing, we vent our kiln and run a fan located on the opposite of the house from the Coconut. The fan is never on before 7am and is usually finished by 6pm. You will hear the fan, but it's not so loud that you can't talk on the phone or have a conversation. We fire, on average, 3-6 times per month so it is likely you won't even hear the fan while you are here.
You will have your own parking spot in our driveway, not shared with any other cars. You will also have access to 2 different decks with chairs, tables and an umbrella.
Interaction with Guests
We live and work out of our home so we are usually home all day. We are available to help with anything you may need or suggestions for hiking and eating. We will be here to greet you upon check-in and show you around. Sometimes we might never see our guests again, other times we go to lunch and dinner and hikes together - it's all up to you!
Kailua is a great town for walking and biking. It offers the beach, cafes, hiking, shopping, and restaurants that vary from cheap and quick to extragavant and expensive. Traffic can be a pain so save some money and walk or bike!
Save money and skip the rental car! We are in walking distance to everything! We offer airport pick up and drop off for $20 each way! Just let us know! If you want to explore the north shore or Waikiki for a day, we rent our car on Relay Rides for a day rate - easy and quick! No need to get charged for extra days you don't need! Let us know if you are interested in renting our car and we will send you the link. Other than that, Kailua is best enjoyed by bike or walking. The Bus is our main form of public transportation and we do have bus schedules for you!
Other Things to Note
This is a residential area with homes very close together. People sleep with their windows open and sounds carry. If you are looking for a place to hang out and party at night - this is NOT the place. Please stay in a hotel in Waikiki. If you are looking for peace and quiet and enjoy being awaken by birds, please join us as we would love to have you!
That being said, our neighbors have pets and kids. Expect to hear the sounds of kids during the day, people watching TV, people playing music (our neighbors a few houses away have a semi-decent Reggae band!). Dogs will bark, cats will meow, birds will chirp, geckos will chirp too! After 9 or 10pm though, it's VERY quiet! (Or I could't live here, trust me.)
No smoking on property - no exceptions - non-smoking guests only!
No drugs allowed
Quiet hours: 9pm - 7am please
Entry code is for registered guests only - do not share the code with anyone else
Please remove your shoes before entering the Coconut
Please respect our neighbors
No visitors allowed on property
Parking of 1 car is available and will be in a private driveway. Please do NOT park on the street
Need extra towels, linens, blankets? Let us know!
We are here to help! If anything comes up please feel free to text, call, email, or knock on our door!
We had such a pleasant experience at the Kailua Coconut. We spent three nights in three different cities while touring Hawaii, but this location was by far the MOST relaxing part of our vacation. The neighborhood is pretty quiet, especially at night. There was also a small water foutain right outside the cottage and it was such a soothing sound to fall asleep to. I thought I would have an issue sleeping without AC, but we opened the window and the breeze at night was surprisingly cool! It was some of the best sleep I have ever had. We also loved the outdoor shower!!! It was nice showering underneath a lovely tree and you'll hear plenty of birds chirping. To some that may be annoying, to us it was a great experience. This place is also within walking distance from several eateries and restaurants. It is also super close to both Kailua and Lanikai beach. We had the pleasure of meeting Denise & Henrik, they were so welcoming and gave us some great tips on activities and nearby attractions. They also left us an adorable welcome note with some sweets! The Coconut is very small, but it's perfect for a couple or single travelers. But pack light because there is not a whole lot of space for luggage. We had three suitcases but it was just enough space. Oh and bring and iron if you'll need it cause there is not one available. But we enjoyed our visit and would recommend this place to anyone!
Denise & Henrik were very good communicators, open to any questions, concerns and suggestions for local activities. They have created a beautiful, clean and safe place to stay. As their guest I felt super safe, and welcomed. They take a healthy pride in their micro-house, they are mindful of keeping bugs out and maintaining a well kept space. They provided free wifi - and all necessities for a comfortable, pleasant stay. Not was delightful staying here and being so close to Kailua beach was a major plus! Mahalo for the experience.
The hosts are super-friendly and communicated their availability for questions, linens, etc. The neighborhood is snug and close walking-distance to many places. It's a little noisy during the day, but the nights are quiet.
Mahalo for staying with us Cat and thank you for the note about our kiln vent. As we are a working ceramic studio, we do fire our pieces during the day on occasion and need to vent the kiln. We never start the vent before 7am to allow for our guests and neighbors to get their sleep! We will add this note to our description though - mahalo!
Great experience in a lovely part of the world. We stayed for two nights and although our stay was brief, we were very happy with the place. Clean, private, set in a quiet residential area. It suited our needs perfectly. Denise and Henrik were welcoming and let us know they were there if we needed something, and prepared a list of local events.
I just completed my second stay here. It's still a wonderful place in a great town. Denise and Henrik are excellent hosts and very accommodating. I can hardly wait to plan another trip here.
About the Host, Denise & Henrik
Business owners, Tiki Mug Maker, runner, triathlete and travel lovers! Our goal is to travel now, not when we retire. If we are not working, we're training and if we're not training, we are working so I can afford to train.
We like the quiet and wouldn't turn down the opportunity to hang in a hammock for an afternoon.
We feel it's important to have a place to stay that is within walking distance to what's "hot," a safe & clean place to keep our stuff, and a quiet place to sleep. As a business owner I find it important to have free access to wi-fi as well. Plus, it's great to access online resources while traveling!
