About this listing
Traveling to Ireland and wish to have a real taste of Donegal? Then Castle Kenny cottage is where you should stay. A 150 year old cosy family cottage that sleeps 5, big garden and patio, fireplace and only 5 minute to the beach.
We would like to introduce you to our real Irish cottage, called "Castle Kenny". The cottage is located in the northwestern province of Donegal, one of the most rugged and beautiful areas of Ireland. This area, with its beautiful mountains, pristine nature and the beautiful coast is a must-see on your holiday to Ireland.
The rumor goes that the cottage is built on or near the remains of a castle. This castle would have been the property of the O'Boyle family and stood in an area called Castle Kenny had. That's where the name of the cottage comes from.
The cottage is a real Irish cottage with recognizable features such as thick walls, small windows, fireplace and only one floor. In addition, the cottage has 2 sheds where the necessary turf, coal, wood and tools are stored.
The cottage consists of a small, cozy living room, separate dining room, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. The so-called master bedroom is a spacious room features a double bed. The second bedroom has two single beds. Both rooms also have ample storage. The dining room is a sofa bed suitable for 1 or 2 persons. The cottage is perfect for 4 people, but could also be used for 5 people.
The outdoor area around the cottage is quite large. At the front part where 2 cars can be parked. The rear of the cottage has a large terrace with outdoor furniture. Furthermore, the cottage has a huge lawn and beautiful plants and trees. Ideal for children to enjoy playing.
TV with satellite
The only area off limit is the attic as we keep our own stuff there.
Interaction with Guests
As much interaction as needed. Guests have my email adress and cellphone number when needed. Our housemanager Edith will be able to stop by if that is something our guests would like.
The area is quite peaceful with only 2 holiday homes surrounding it. One of them is a real old cottage as well. The cottage is situated in the hills giving you a rural feeling. Quite close to the highway, so you can hear cars passing by.
The easiest way to get around is by car. Free parking at the cottage for 4 cars (you can park in the garden too if required). You can also take the bus, but please check timings (Bus Éireann) as they don't go so regularly. Best stops are Frosses and Ardaghey Crossroads
Other Things to Note

No rules. Just common sense. We will send you the directions and the manual of the cottage whenever your reservation is complete.
We had a lovely stay at Castle Kenny. An apple pie was waiting for us when we arrived ! The house got everything we needed. The only remark I can say is that it is a bit old.. Other than that it was great !
Cracking little traditional Irish cottage within a short drive of Donegal town. Loved it, brought back some memories of my youth in my Grandmothers house. All original, nice plot of land, good walks and bike rides close by.
Myself and my girlfriend stayed here for 3 nights. The cottage is absolutely lovely. It is warm, very comfortable (more spacious than the photos suggest) and has everything you could possibly need. It is also a perfect location for visting Donegal Town, Killybegs and Sliabh Liag. Thanks again Bryan and cheers for the apple tart!
Had a wonderful time staying in this well stocked, well maintained, traditional irish cottage. Spent the days out exploring the local area and the evenings relaxing in front of the turf fire and enjoying the delicious apple pie that was dropped off. We found the cottage as described - down a lane, cozy rooms, comfortable for 3 adults and 2 children. We were pleasantly surprised by all the conveniences in the small kitchen, the bright room that had be added onto the back of the original cottage, good wifi, ample supply of fire material and towels.
"Castle Kenny" is a charming cottage that leaves a lasting impression. A peat fire, a walk down a country lane, a small glimpse into traditional rural Irish living. At the same time, modern amenities: Comfortable beds, radiator heating in addition to the fireplace, a modern kitchen and bathroom. There was plenty of space for my three person family to stay comfortably for a few days, but I kept wondering about life here a century and a half ago - raising a family without gas or electricity in this small space (long before the dining room was added) - and it really makes you think. If you have stayed in an Irish castle hotel, this is a perfect counterpoint. The location is very pleasant, about a ten minute drive to the sophisticated town of Donegal (try the excellent Chandpur Indian restaurant), and less than an hour to the awesome (in the literal meaning of the word) Slieve League cliffs. Bryan is an excellent host, who gave clear instructions about everything. There was even a fresh pie in the kitchen when we arrived. Although he wasn't in Ireland when we stayed there, he sent a caretaker from the nearby village of Frosses to help us when we had some minor difficulties. Because this is a very small, very old cottage, it can be a bit quirky - like when the bathroom cold water facet inexplicably ran hot for an hour before returning to normal just as the caretaker arrived - but that mostly adds to the charm (my wife claims that a leprechaun did it). Staying here was very relaxing, and I wish that we could have stayed a few more days.
The cottage is beautiful and obviously loved and cared for, the bed was great and shower, electricity, mod-cons etc worked perfectly. The location is quiet and perfect for exploring the local towns and stunning coastal scenery. We even had a fresh apple pie waiting for us on arrival! Already trying to work out when we can visit again and will be recommending to my friends and family.
