I loved staying at La Estancia. From the start, my interaction with Rosa Maria to book the room was warm and friendly. She offered to have a taxi ready for my arrival at the airport, which took a weight off my shoulders. Although my luggage arrived much later than my flight the taxi driver, Guillermo, patiently waited for me and provided amazing conversation on the way along with fascinating insights about life in Cuba. I assume that Guillermo is a trusted associate of the host family, which is indicative of the high quality of service they provide in welcoming guests.
Again, I was met warmly upon my arrival at La Estancia by Rosita and Jorge Luis’s nephew Yosniel who gave me a tour of the house and offered to prepare dinner.
I had the pleasure of enjoying breakfasts prepared by Yosniel and Yeffri. Meals were delicious, plentiful, healthy and reasonably priced. Yosniel and Yeffri were also both a delight to talk with. They provided excellent directions to nearby sights and recommendations for live music and worthwhile activities in La Habana. Considering that I can be a little on the shy side when I’m traveling alone, communicating with Yosniel and Yeffri was effortless and I very much looked forward conversing with them at meal times or when we crossed paths.
The room itself was very clean, comfortable, and had an air conditioner directly above the bed, which was amazing after a long day of walking in the sun. I also enjoyed spending time in the beautifully decorated living room. The view from the window was lovely. You could watch everyday life unfold on the street and see the Malecon, which was a short walk away. I especially appreciated that the location wasn’t in a tourist heavy area yet was safe and close to the Vedado district, Habana Vieja, and la calle Prado (where you can book excursions through the major hotels and be among el Capitolio, el Gran Teatro and other wonderful sights).
If you want to stay at a casa particular with genuinely caring and thoughtful hosts (who go out of their way to accommodate your needs), I would highly recommend La Estancia. This was my first visit to Cuba and am incredibly thankful for the hosts’ patience and understanding as I made one too many mistakes while planning my stay. I am also very grateful that they arranged my taxi ride to the airport, which had to pick me up at an inconvenient hour. Thank you Jorge Luis, Rosita, Yosniel, and Yeffri! I miss La Habana already and look forward to returning ☺
