Mahen was a really good host, he picked us up at the train station and got us settled in nicely in his home. In addition he gave us really good advice on how to get around and he even got us some food just before we departed towards Colombo. All in all Mahen and his wife made all efforts to make us feel at home. The house is a bit off from the city center of Kandy which is a huge plus as Kandy is a very busy city. The room is big and spacious.
Mahen is one of the most proactive hosts I have found. From the very moment I initiated contact with him, Mahen has been nothing short of a resourceful guide. He took the time to understand the purpose of my trip and provided relevant information and built useful contacts to ensure my trip is successful. It's because of people like him, I love AirBnB!
Mane arrived at the railway station promptly to pick me up. The communication prior to that was very prompt. As for the room itself, it was big, clean and airy. There was a mosquito net, though I didn't find any mosquitos in the room. Access to the bathroom was not an issue.
I would highly recommend staying with Mahen, if you want to supplement your trip to Kandy with local flavors, tons of information, and someone nice to talk to.
The home stay is 10 minute tuk tuk ride from the downtown in a green, quiet area. The owner family is extremely helpfull, they gave us lot of information about Kendy and helped to organize the transport to Habaranna. The apartment is well separated from the rest of the house, after 20 days of traveling in Sri Lanka we really enjoyed that we have a full apartment not just a room with a bed. We used the kitchen and the washing machine a lot. The breakfast was great! Only thing they could improve is the cleanness: the kitchen, the bathroom, under the bed should be cleaner.
It has never been soooo great to stay at Mr. Mahen's house. He has a careful mindset which helps me a lot in arrangement with my parents travelling. I highly recommend his house to all travelers who's willing to stay in Kandy with a Sri Lankan stye of life. Btw Mahen also cook very delicious breakfast and his recommendation to vehicle is also excellent!
Mahen's home stay was definitely one of the highlights during my amazing trip in mid-south Sri Lanka. The house locates at a very good spot, close to Kandy main road but never makes you feel noisy; sits at middle of the mountain thus gives you a great mountain/city view from the upper balcony. Besides all this infrastructure advantages, Mahen's warm welcoming, helpful tips on trip planning, best in class breakfast cooking and super caring personality make the stay really a fantastic experience. Highly recommend his house to everyone, backpackers/couples/groups/families. Thanks for everything behind this great time.
We LOVED Mahen and his family! Their apartment felt like home. Every morning we were cooked a delicious Sri Lankan breakfast that even came with desert. I like desert with breakfast, it hunk I will have to adopt this. The apartment is spacious and lovely. We truly felt like family. It is super easy and cheap to take any bus to town for 13 rupees. Then you can take a tuk tuk back to the house. Perfect place to stay. We also booked a 2 day trek with Mahen's son-in-law, Prasad. It was wonderful! The first day we hiked through the tea plantations and the mountains. So many beautiful trees and views! Then we camped out and had a wonderful meal and a bonfire and drums and singing. The next day we hiked to a waterfall and then through the rice terraces. Breathtaking- and I am not an exaggerator. I have been many places in the world but there is nothing quite like Sri Lanka. Get into it. It will love you back! THANK YOU to our family, Wijeratne! See you again! Beth (USA) and Tobi (Liechtenstein!)
Mahen picked us up from the trainstation and on the way to his home he told us about Kandy. The accomodition is 10 minutes drive by public transport (bus is easy doing for 13 rps/person), tuk tuk will cost 200 rps. The house was big but not so clean as we used to. It will benefit with some updating and a goodmscrub. We only used the place to sleep, the two, days that we stay we left early in the morning, because we didn't feel at home.
