  • What an amazing little schoolhouse! My boyfriend, little dog and I all stayed for the weekend and fell in love. The views are incredible and the schoolhouse itself is so charming. Joe was a wonderful host and gave us great suggestions for places to see and eat in the area, but we loved the schoolhouse so much that we spent most of our days on the property. Bovina is the perfect country getaway! We will definitely come stay at this beautiful schoolhouse again!

  • We stayed in this lovely little cabin with our toddler daughter for a weekend in November. It snowed during our stay and still the place was very warm and cosy, lots of lovely bedding to make our stay very comfortable. The cabin is beautifully decorated, lots of lovely details from the curtain poles to the antique bath and Joe is very communicative which made arranging the whole thing very easy and straight forward.

The cooking facilities aren't perfect but you can definitely cook there. There is a one ring stove, a microwave and toasting oven, so we manged fine. Joe is working on improving the cooking facilities. If you don't fancy cooking, there are charming places to eat, we had a take out pizza from Table on Ten, (6 mins drive away) best pizza had in ages!

  • The schoolhouse is *adorable*! Very cute and intimate. We had amazing view of the stars at night from the warm bed, and the field in back was lots of fun for our puppy to run around in.
Cooking was also better than I expected. Joe just bought a hot plate that we made food on.
    Clawfoot tub was really nice.
We'd totally love to go back!

  • We had a wonderful stay at the schoolhouse! It is charming and romantic, situated on a country dirt road overlooking beautiful pastures and mountains and artisitcally decorated by Joe and his wife. When we told Joe that we were coming with a toddler, he graciously equipped the schoolhouse with a hot plate and toaster oven, as the stove was disconnected. We had a cozy dinner by the outside firepit and grill on a crisp fall evening, a memorable and special night. It is small for sure, but that is part of its romance and charm. Down the hill there is a nice pond landscaped with rocks which our toddler loved. Nearby are the towns of Andes and Bovina Center with a few really nice places to eat out, Two Old Tarts and Buttercup. The kitchen and refrigerator are small, but we made out fine and would definitely go again. Thank you!

  • What a lovely place! We had a wonderful weekend enjoying this beautiful schoolhouse and its truly remarkable surroundings. The schoolhouse is a perfect getaway for a couple looking to relax. Highly recommended.

  • The schoolhouse is certainly charming, cozy and romantic. The mountains are beautiful, and Joe's land abuts a mountain owned by the NYC watershed, and makes for a refreshing hike. It is, however, expensive for a roughly 20X20 space.

If you're considering renting this place, we have a few pieces of advice we wish we had know before booking: 1) There is no stove/oven. We brought a camp stove. That worked fine. Joe also has a small charcoal grill. 2) The water heater is not capable of filling the bath tub with hot water, so fill it in stages and/or boil your own on your camp stove. 3) The house sits 10 feet from the gravel road, and cars pass a few times per hour.

The place is beautifully appointed in a rustic sort of way. It's an aesthetically rich surrounding, and the view is picturesque. The leaves on the distant trees visibly changed color during our few days. And it's quite high in elevation, so everything is a bit crisper.
Joe also has a lots of tips on local food.

We did really enjoy our time here, and would consider coming back. We'd recommend it to anyone looking to rough it a bit in the mountains.

  • The schoolhouse was a great relaxing few days that I certainly needed. Beautiful location, the lake is nice as well. I would definitely stay there again. A word of caution if you plan on cooking. You have to be creative with what you make since there is only a large pot and no pans or spatulas.

  • It's hard to believe such a magical little place exists. The schoolhouse was as perfect as it was painted; the farms flanking the dirt road leading back, a picturesque pond and fields of wildflowers as a backyard, the perfectly appointed and quite romantic schoolhouse and the best star-gazing we've ever come upon. Joe has done an amazing job making the 'simple life' even more inviting.

  • What an amazing retreat! The schoolhouse is gorgeous and the surroundings are divine. It was a perfect getaway and Joe was a gracious host. Also, the local farmstands with produce and dairy were a bonus. We hightly recommend!

  • Wow! If you can believe it the pictures don't do it justice. The cabin is in one of the most beautiful, peaceful and breathtaking spots I have ever visited. It is decorated meticulously, with every detail perfect and a very comfy bed indeed. There really is nothing around to disturb you - there's a lovely lake to swim in and the most spectacular stars to watch at night. Joe and Megan were so accommodating and relaxed. Thank you so much Megan and Joe for making our visit so special, we will be back as soon as we can!!
