Guest Access

You have access to the river for swimming and the riverside open air lounge. There is no curfew.

Interaction with Guests

The amount of interaction is truly up to you. I will pick you up in the afternoon, give you the key, make breakfast and drive to the tourist area or bus stop for hiking in the mornings.
Beyond these things, the interaction is up to you. There's the river for swimming at the hostel and Sasamekura mountain for hiking minutes away.
If you're planning to do other major hikes in the area or go to the Unesco world heritage area, I have lots of information and will help with questions when ever you need. If you're planning a big day out, it is best to chat together, at least about the options and choices in Nikko, the night before instead of during breakfast.

The Neighborhood

Beautiful, remote location set on the river.
There are places to eat nearby and a nice hiking trail 600m upstream at one of the cafes. The roads are good for leisurely bike rides. We have 4 bikes to rent. There are minor shrines within distance and an amazing waterfall about an hour away on bike.

Getting around

We're not in the tourist part of Nikko and only accessible via car or our free shuttle from the 2 closest train stations to the hostel;

Fubasami station on the JR Nikko line or Shimogoshiro Station (no phone at this station so call before you get on the train.

Call before you board the train so that we can meet you at the pickup station. We can’t pick up at JR or Tobu Nikko.

  • Scout is a great host and his place is amazing! We had one night in ine of the riverside rooms which is a converted train cart, it was really cosy and so much fun. Our second night was in the main building which was equally as comfortable. The hostel is in the middle of nowhere which was exactly what we wanted and had hoped for, beautiful countryside and nature. There is also an amazing cafe just a few hundred meters up stream which has the best green curry ever! Scout picked us up and dropped us off at the train station and makes a fantastic breakfast. Thank you for an amazing stay! I would fully recommend staying here!

  • Scout was incredibly hospitable and helpful and all round nice guy.
The Nikko area is amazing and am so glad I made the trek from Tokyo. Still have not seen anywhere near all there is to see really want to go back..

  • Scout runs a hostel out of a re-purposed former onsen. That means awesome tatami style rooms, a great lounge area, and showers that are located in the old bathing lodge. Scout was a great host and makes a killer breakfast. I would definitely do this again.

  • We only stayed one night at Zen Hostel, but it was a good experience. We enjoyed our room so much, especially after spending a couple of days in a closet-like room in Tokyo. Also the home-made pizza's and the huge breakfast were highly appreciated. The hostel is a bit out of the way though, but if you like to get away from it all, this is a great place to relax and spend some time in nature. Scout also picks you up and drives you back to the train station and he offers a lot of information about hiking. Recommended!

  • This is a gem and well worth trade-off for the distance out of town. Scout is ever helpful, but unobtrusive and the shuttle service works well. We only stayed for 3 nights but found the hostel very cathartic after a few frenetic days in Tokyo.

The included breakfast is great and we opted for the evening meals twice which were very tasty pizzas.

Overall, highly recommended, and would have no hesitation returning should the opportunity arise.

  • Zen Hostel was awesome! Scout is super friendly and helped drive my sister and I around Nikko. We had lots of laughs and even made friends with an Aussie who was also staying there :). location is definitely a little farther from the main stop for Tobu Nikko train- but don't let that stop you! I mean, we got to stay in a Ryokan style box car by the river. It's just as cool as it sounds. Thanks a million!

  • Scout is a great host. He takes care of pick-up and he well informed us the surroundings, ie. where to go and what to do. We particularly enjoyed very much the breakfast. The home-made bread is super :)
