Interaction with Guests
The amount of interaction is truly up to you. I will pick you up in the afternoon, give you the key, make breakfast and drive to the tourist area or bus stop for hiking in the mornings.
Beyond these things, the interaction is up to you. There's the river for swimming at the hostel and Sasamekura mountain for hiking minutes away.
If you're planning to do other major hikes in the area or go to the Unesco world heritage area, I have lots of information and will help with questions when ever you need. If you're planning a big day out, it is best to chat together, at least about the options and choices in Nikko, the night before instead of during breakfast.
Beautiful, remote location set on the river.
There are places to eat nearby and a nice hiking trail 600m upstream at one of the cafes. The roads are good for leisurely bike rides. We have 4 bikes to rent. There are minor shrines within distance and an amazing waterfall about an hour away on bike.
We're not in the tourist part of Nikko and only accessible via car or our free shuttle from the 2 closest train stations to the hostel;
Fubasami station on the JR Nikko line or Shimogoshiro Station (no phone at this station so call before you get on the train.
Call before you board the train so that we can meet you at the pickup station. We can’t pick up at JR or Tobu Nikko.
no curfew in the lounge area / pavilion riverside.

Biking, Swimming, Hiking after check-out is half the price of a night's stay until 4pm, full night's fee after 4pm.
superbe logement (en plus nous etions seules!) au bord de la riviere...
scout nous a prete des cartes et explique ce qu il y avait affaires aux alentours.
ideal pour les randonneurs car plein de sentiers alentours!
We really enjoyed staying in the SPACE riverhouse. It is a great place with a very nice living room and outside area. It is a perfect place to stay if you want to hike and bike in Nikko. Scout gave us loads of tips on where to go, which made our experience in Nikko very good. We will definitely come back if we get the chance!
Awesome place to stay! Host made every effort to make it comfortable. The descriptions were accurate. The location is remote, but easily accessible via train and shuttles to the hostel. I stayed in both a shared space and private space. They are both great values. There is great opportunity to meet people from other parts of the world. Love the space for making music or having a barbecue both of which build community in your short stay. Lastly, great internet and great breakfast. Will stay again, but next time I hope to bring a group rather than making a solo trip.
The place was amazing! The river running across the place, the air, the area, everything was even better than our expectation.
Scout was an awesome host. He cooked, drove us back and forth between the hostel and stations, and helped us plan the day trip as much as he could.
We enjoyed our stay a lot, and definitely will come back here next summer to swim in that beautiful river.
What an amazing place and person.
Scout was epic in his suggestions for food and places to go. Off shops, who knew.
Never steered me wrong.
How he ferris people around as well as making awesome breakfasts I don't know. A++ to Scout.
The accommodation was amazingly beautiful and serene. With lots of options for hikes and swims in the lake.
My room was clean and the futon very comfy. I only got out of bed because of the beauty around me.
Will for sure come back if I'm ever in Nikko again.
On my first evening at SPACE I already decided I wanted to stay 3 nights instead of my 2 nights booked. But you could definitely spend even more time here if you like mountains and rivers. It was so nice to have the luxury of both being picked up and dropped off at the world heritage sites, a hiking spot or the train station and ALSO have a nice and relaxed (not so touristy) spot to sleep at. And do some swimming of course! Which I unfortunately only did on my last morning... but I would recommend anyone to go into the water immediately! If you're cold try the amazing spacious shower afterwards. I loved it. I want a shower like that at home.
Hiking in this area is great too and Scout can tell you where to go. Just tell him what you would like to see or do and he can probably help. If you like something special and personal I would highly recommend you this place.
Oh I forgot there is also a computer and wi-fi, really nice for making further travel plans. That is, if you ever want to leave of course...
Scout is a great host and his place is amazing! We had one night in ine of the riverside rooms which is a converted train cart, it was really cosy and so much fun. Our second night was in the main building which was equally as comfortable. The hostel is in the middle of nowhere which was exactly what we wanted and had hoped for, beautiful countryside and nature. There is also an amazing cafe just a few hundred meters up stream which has the best green curry ever! Scout picked us up and dropped us off at the train station and makes a fantastic breakfast. Thank you for an amazing stay! I would fully recommend staying here!
