Interaction with Guests
The amount of interaction is truly up to you. I will pick you up in the afternoon, give you the key, make breakfast and drive to the tourist area or bus stop for hiking in the mornings.
Beyond these things, the interaction is up to you. There's the river for swimming at the hostel and Sasamekura mountain for hiking minutes away.
If you're planning to do other major hikes in the area or go to the Unesco world heritage area, I have lots of information and will help with questions when ever you need. If you're planning a big day out, it is best to chat together, at least about the options and choices in Nikko, the night before instead of during breakfast.
Beautiful, remote location set on the river.
There are places to eat nearby and a nice hiking trail 600m upstream at one of the cafes. The roads are good for leisurely bike rides. We have 4 bikes to rent. There are minor shrines within distance and an amazing waterfall about an hour away on bike.
We're not in the tourist part of Nikko and only accessible via car or our free shuttle from the 2 closest train stations to the hostel;

This is a very special, unusual location: quirky hostel on a river far away from the tacky touristy part of Nikko. Scout may sound standoffish over email but is super helpful and a very sweet person once you meet him. Plus, he cooks the most amazing breakfasts we had during our whole time in Japan! He also offered all the people who were staying at the hostel a tour of the area, and took care of every detail including the view over a waterfall during lunch.
This being our fifth trip to Japan, our stay with Scout was something different for us city-dwellers. We truly loved the Nikko countryside and the lovely river behind the hostel. The photo of the room and other descriptions are accurate, though you really need to be there to discover the peace and tranquility that cannot be afforded words. We found the room itself cozy, for two, and our only issue with the room was really a super minor one - that we couldn't hang anything as there were no hooks. We didn't mind this too much.
The futons were very cosy and comfortable - certainly one of our better futon experiences, and we've had many!
Scout himself may not be very chatty on social media, but we enjoyed talking to him in real life. We felt that we had left Nikko having met a kindred spirit, a new found friend. As a host, he is reliable, dedicated and will plan your day's itinerary with you. He is always full of suggestions and ideas to help you make the most of your time in Nikko, which is full of things to see!
We will definitely be back!
superbe logement (en plus nous etions seules!) au bord de la riviere...
scout nous a prete des cartes et explique ce qu il y avait affaires aux alentours.
ideal pour les randonneurs car plein de sentiers alentours!
We really enjoyed staying in the SPACE riverhouse. It is a great place with a very nice living room and outside area. It is a perfect place to stay if you want to hike and bike in Nikko. Scout gave us loads of tips on where to go, which made our experience in Nikko very good. We will definitely come back if we get the chance!
Awesome place to stay! Host made every effort to make it comfortable. The descriptions were accurate. The location is remote, but easily accessible via train and shuttles to the hostel. I stayed in both a shared space and private space. They are both great values. There is great opportunity to meet people from other parts of the world. Love the space for making music or having a barbecue both of which build community in your short stay. Lastly, great internet and great breakfast. Will stay again, but next time I hope to bring a group rather than making a solo trip.
The place was amazing! The river running across the place, the air, the area, everything was even better than our expectation.
Scout was an awesome host. He cooked, drove us back and forth between the hostel and stations, and helped us plan the day trip as much as he could.
We enjoyed our stay a lot, and definitely will come back here next summer to swim in that beautiful river.
What an amazing place and person.
Scout was epic in his suggestions for food and places to go. Off shops, who knew.
Never steered me wrong.
How he ferris people around as well as making awesome breakfasts I don't know. A++ to Scout.
The accommodation was amazingly beautiful and serene. With lots of options for hikes and swims in the lake.
My room was clean and the futon very comfy. I only got out of bed because of the beauty around me.
Will for sure come back if I'm ever in Nikko again.
