Private room in my Columbia Heights row house. 4 blocks from the Metro Green/Yellow line which is a direct route to downtown, museums, monuments, and shopping. The house is full of vintage finds, and I live with my girlfriend and two amazing dogs.
Awesome 100 year old townhouse in the middle of Columbia Heights filled with vintage modern home furnishings. The private room has a full size bed, 32" LCD HD flat-screen tv with cable and Smart Blu-ray player with Netflix, Youtube, HBOGo, and access to my large DVD collection. There is a desk with computer, wireless internet access, Stereo with Ipod hookup, and a mini fridge with refreshments and snacks and also a mid century chair for relaxing and reading. I have two very cool dogs, Ollie is a very lazy 8 year old male Am. bulldog/ Dane mix, and Eddie a 2 year old sweet female deaf Am. Bulldog, both are very friendly and eager to make new friends. I'm located only a few blocks from multiple metro stops, and shopping and nightlife in Columbia Heights. For additional nightlife options there are tons restaurants and bar choices in nearby Adams Morgan, Mt. Pleasant, and U St. In the summer I build custom bicycles in my workshop so I have bicycles to rent if you need a way to get around. There's also a private backyard with a fire-pit and koi pond for relaxing outside.
Guests will have access to a shared bathroom, kitchen and the rest of the house. Feel free to cook a meal in my well stocked kitchen, or watch a movie or game in the living room, or just relax in your room.

I or my girlfriend will be here to check you in and show you around. Once you've checked in you're free to come and go as you please. I often cook and if you're around you'll likely be invited to join us for a meal or hang out with our friends watching a movie or hockey game. If you like more privacy you can hang out in your room where there is a desk for getting some work done, and a tv with cable, and a smart blu-ray player with lots more entertainment options.
Columbia Heights is a fantastic place to live and visit. Convenient to everything going on in DC, the Columbia Heights Metro stop is your easy link to downtown monuments and museums. You can walk to restaurants and bars just up 11th st. or enjoy the fountain and community vibe in the Columbia Heights center near the Tivoli Theater. U St. is a short walk to even more nightlife, restaurants, weekend flea markets, and even more shops. You'll really be in the middle of it all!
The metro Green/Yellow line is just a few blocks away, and is a short 5 stop trip down to the monuments and museums without having to change trains. About 30 minutes door to door. It couldn't be easier!
In addition I rent bikes on Spinlister. Just use your favorite search engine to find "profile/15341 on Spinlister"
Communication is the key, let me know what type of schedule you are going to be keeping and I'll be as accommodating as I can. I live here with my two dogs and cookie baker girlfriend. I work weekends and she works almost every day (owning your own business is so rewarding! ) but both of our schedules are very flexible. Once you're checked in you're free to come and go as you please, and use any of the common areas of the house including the kitchen and laundry. The older dog Ollie has the run of the house, but the younger one is crated when no one is home to keep him from getting into trouble. Both of the dogs are friendly and love any attention you give so dog friendly people are ideal for stays at our house. If you have any questions please ask, We love this place and think you will too...
My friend and I had a great time in DC! Joel's apt is located just a few blocks from the metro, making it easy to get down to the museums and monuments. Joel was a great host and have us plenty of recommendations on how to get places and where were the best places to go, even providing us with a map to help navigate the subway and downtown. The room was perfect too, towels and snacks were provided, as well as wifi and computer access in our room. Couldn't have asked for a better host in a city that neither my friend or I were familiar with; we felt right at home! Definitely recommend staying with Joel :)
Had an excellent stay in Joel's house and in Columbia Heights/DC. The house is indeed very cool. Joel's a fantastic host - super helpful - offering bottled water, snacks, toothbrushes etc. Joel also invited us to a fun cafe/restaurant launch nearby. It's a fun, chilled out house with lots to look at. Great area, easy to walk to Columbia Heights, U Street. Would highly recommend and would stay again!
We stayed at Joel's place during a recent trip to DC during Cherry Blossom weekend. Joel and his girlfriend and dogs were very friendly and accommodating. They were very flexible since our arrival had been delayed. His room was exactly as described, complete with a TV and a computer. We felt perfectly at home. I would recommend Joel's place to anyone who is looking for a comfortable place close to a metro station.
Words cannot do Joel's hosting justice! It was fantastic. His home is wonderfully quaint and eccentric, while at the same time being in a exuberantly vibrant part of DC. My room was perfect and included all the amenities one needs while traveling. Joel is a tremendous person who will certainly add character and happy memories to your stay here. You'll be hard pressed to find a more exciting and fun place to stay. Thank you Joel, Shannon and the two amazing dogs for such an awesome stay! PS - Shannon makes the best cookies in DC!!
Joel was over my expectations in terms of welcome me and make me feel as good as possible. And I´d say is a "tailor made" host. I can only thank him for share his time and be so generous as he was. The room was better than a great suite and I enjoyed a great rest at night. A great place for travelers. Airbnb at its best.
Joel was welcoming and informative about his place and neighborhood. He gave me tips on where to park (along with a parking pass) and was nice enough to move my car while I was out sightseeing--huge favor! It's in a great location to metro and bars/restaurants. I love that the room had a mini-fridge (stocked with water and drinks)..so great after a drive. Also having a tv in the room was nice even if I didn't use it. There are two big, friendly and well trained dogs so if you don't like cute dogs who love attention look elsewhere. There are stairs leading to this house and stairs up to the room so if a person has mobility issues this is not for them. I'm a stair climbing crazy dog lady so if you're like me stay here, you'll like it! I did!
I had a wonderful time staying with Joel (and Shannon)! I was exhausted after long days researching / attending a conference at nearby Howard University, so it was nice to feel like I was "coming home" at the end of the day. I had a lot of fun hanging out with Joel and Shannon and some of their friends one night, and just crashing in my room and having a Netflix binge session another night. There is a little mini-fridge in the room that was stocked with bottled water, soda, and fun little snacks, which were perfect to come back to after skipping lunch one day. I also picked up a few salads and things at Whole Foods (a short uber ride away) to have during the week. Joel offered the kitchen for cooking, too, and Joel and Shannon shared or offered many of the meals they cooked during the week, which was really nice of them and made me feel at home. To summarize: Joel and Shannon are great, nice, fun, accomodating hosts, the room is clean and has everything you will want or need, the house is filled with lots of cool art and vintage finds to look at. The dogs, Oliver and Eddie, are very sweet. The neighborhood is nice, very convenient for me to walk 2 blocks to Howard University, but it was also fantastic to be able to walk to the restaurants and bars on 14th and U Street. For coffee nearby, check out Hazaar (4 blocks). They have single origin roasts for cheap with tasting notes. Seriously, I wish that I lived by this place. So delicious. Also, just up the block, Woodland Vegan Bistro, which also has prepared salads and other noms for easy takeout (they have tables, too). Good for an easy lunch or dinner nearby. I also recommend Busboys and Poets for coffee/breakfast. I'll definitely be back the next time that I am in DC! Thanks for making my trip so nice, Joel and Shannon! And thanks, Shannon, for introducing me to the marvel that is Bethenny Frankel, and for letting me crash your TV night.
