Private room in my Columbia Heights row house. 4 blocks from the Metro Green/Yellow line which is a direct route to downtown, museums, monuments, and shopping. The house is full of vintage finds, and I live with my girlfriend and two amazing dogs.
Awesome 100 year old townhouse in the middle of Columbia Heights filled with vintage modern home furnishings. The private room has a full size bed, 32" LCD HD flat-screen tv with cable and Smart Blu-ray player with Netflix, Youtube, HBOGo, and access to my large DVD collection. There is a desk with computer, wireless internet access, Stereo with Ipod hookup, and a mini fridge with refreshments and snacks. I have two very cool dogs, Ollie is a very lazy 3 year old Am. bulldog/ Dane mix, and Eddie a sweet deaf Am. Bulldog mix, both are very friendly and eager to make new friends. I'm located only a few blocks from multiple metro stops, and shopping and nightlife in Columbia Heights. For additional nightlife options there are tons restaurants and bar choices in nearby Adams Morgan, Mt. Pleasant, and U St. In the summer I build custom bicycles in my workshop so I have bicycles to rent if you need a way to get around. There's also a private backyard with a fire-pit and koi pond for relaxing outside.
Guests will have access to a shared bathroom, kitchen and the rest of the house. Feel free to cook a meal in my well stocked kitchen, or watch a movie or game in the living room, or just relax in your room.
I or my girlfriend will be here to check you in and show you around. Once you've checked in you're free to come and go as you please. I often cook and if you're around you'll likely be invited to join us for a meal or hang out with our friends watching a movie or hockey game. If you like more privacy you can hang out in your room where there is a desk for getting some work done, and a tv with cable, and a smart blu-ray player with lots more entertainment options.

Great location, great stay! The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Joel and Shannon were terrific hosts. A great place to stay when in DC!
This was my first time using airbnb. I had looked at a number of places and Joel was the first one who approved me right away, and when my plans changed, he was flexible and accommodating. I didn't actually stay in the room I signed up for, but the other room was cozy, the bed was comfortable and I slept like a log, no problem. The dogs were not a bother at all. I certainly enjoyed the touch of the small fridge in the room with bottled water and other snacks. When I accidentally tripped on an uneven sidewalk just outside the metro stop near where Joel lives, I ended up with badly scraped hands. This was late at night, and I wasn't sure of the neighborhood, but the people who saw me fall immediately came over to see how I was, helped me up, and made sure I wasn't injured beyond my scrapes. When I got back to Joel's place, Not only did Joel help clean out the wounds and administer first aid, he kept cracking jokes and made me feel better about my embarrassing incident. His girlfriend got an icepack for me as well. Joel was also helpful with directions getting to the place, getting a parking space, and his girlfriend Shannon helped me find which metro to take to meet up with my friend, and with family members.
I would highly recommend staying here, and if I find the need to stay in DC on my own again, I'll definitely check here first.
We had a great stay at Joel and Shannon's place. Everything was prepared for and their dogs were welcoming too :) great hosts!
Joel was a gracious host and very accommodating. I would recommend this room. Thank you Joel!
The house had a ton of character, and the bedroom was very spacious and pleasant. Most importantly, Joel and Shannon were fantastic hosts. They gave us tips on things to do while we were in D.C., and we had a great time talking to them. My sister and I actually ended up sampling the cookies from Shannon's bakery at the neighborhood flea market and got a drink at the rooftop bar Joel tends. It's rare that you stay in a random stranger's house and feel like you would have been friends with them anyway. All in all, we had a wonderful time.
I stayed at Joel's place when I was in DC for work. Joel, his girlfriend Shannon, and their friendly dogs were extremely accommodating hosts. The room I stayed in was clean and comfortable, and even had snacks! I'd highly recommend crashing at Joel's for a few days while checking out DC.
Simply put, Joel and Shannon's place is awesome, they are awesome and I highly recommend staying with them if you are in DC. My room was pretty much perfect. Its furnished really beautifully, as is the rest of their house, and the bed was really comfortable. It even had a desk, which was perfect for me since I was in DC on a work trip and was able to get tons of work done in the comfort of their home. The house is full of interesting stuff, and if you are lucky, Joel will even show you some of the amazing things he collects.
When it comes down to it, hosts can make or break a vacation. Joel and Shannon are incredible hosts. They are kind, trusting and a lot of fun to hang out with. I would absolutely stay with them again!
Joel is a welcoming and knowledgable host! He is very respectful of your privacy (great for people with a hectic schedule on their trip), yet he will take the time to give insightful tips about experiencing the city (dining, arts, transportation, neighborhoods, etc). The room is very comfortable, and the townhouse is extremely close to the metro. Columbia Heights is a fun and easily accessible neighborhood. Joel's dogs are adorable, and the home's decor is charming and eclectic. I absolutely loved my stay!
Joel's place was great, he was efficient in communicating to set up the stay and his place was quite pleasant. He asked me if I wanted something to eat when I came in and to watch a hockey game with him. I was so pooped from my business travel and conference that I was not my usual convivial self, but I would stay with him again and this time I would be more social.
I stayed at Joel's house for 2 nights. It's a great place for visting DC, close to the Metro and a nice room. Joel invited me for dinner and his selfmade pizza is absolutely great! He gave me a lot of tipps where to go first and where to spend my time. I can only recommend to stay at Joel's house if you are in DC - as long as you like dogs.
