Private room in architectural loft

Loft - Private room · Varet St, Brooklyn, NY 11206, United States

One room in a unique Bushwick loftspace, shared with a couple, their roommate, and a very friendly dog named Buster.

The Space

Come stay with us in our sleek, hand-built loft space just two blocks from the Morgan L stop. In 2014, you won't find a more happenin' hood in the 5 boroughs.

About the room:
One bedroom with lofted bed and downstairs sitting area. Lots of space for your suitcases and a small closet bar for hanging clothes. In the sleeping area there's a TV with built in DVD player for late night movie watching sessions.

Apartment has WiFi.

About the loft:
Five years ago four friends moved into a loft space and started building it out. But this wasn't your standard slap dash loft construction. One roommate was an industrial designer, one was an architect. Two were DIY art makers who were good at following the other's instructions.

A whole year of communal sleeping and a mess ton of drywall dust later, this place emerged. Built using reclaimed materials, non VOC paints, and a whole lotta love, its our NYC home and we love to show it off. Conveniently located on the first floor, so you won't have to schlep your suitcase.

Very private and quiet, with a gerry rigged soundsystem that allows you to listen to music in different parts of the common space without disturbing anyone who may be still sleeping.

Coffee shops, "Green" Gym, Roberta's Pizza and a kajillion other bars and restaurants all within a handsmack's reach.

About us: While two of the OG roomies of our home have since gone on to other things, we (John and Candace) are a couple who share one bedroom in the space. We're freelancers as well as video and performing artists. Sometimes we host an additional roomie or friend from out of town. Sometimes not. We also now have a dog named Buster who we adopted recently from the local kill shelter. He's a super great dog, and we think you'll love him as much as we do. He's quite the little socialite.

We love to travel and love to host, and we understand that what makes AirBnB awesome is the ability to have a local's take on things to do and see. We love to suggest music venues, restaurants, bars and unique and cheap excursions that are off the beaten tourist path.

And we're Southern. We cook a lot of food. Chances are we'll try and give you some... more than once. Fair warning.

Oh, and did we mention our private garden patio? Yeah. It's a big deal. Roof access, too!

Smoking only outside, Good parking prospects, LGBT allies, WIFI, but no cable or TV reception (who needs 'em these days?)

AC on the hot days, but otherwise we try to keep it fresh air style.

We speak English, some Spanish, French, and, like, ten words in Norwegian. And we need to practice, so come talk to us.

Guest Access

You have access to the whole house. We invite you to treat it as your own and make yourself comfortable in the main living space. We're used to having roommates and living in a crowded city, so please, make yourselves at home!

Interaction with Guests

We love to grab the occassional drink/dinner/brunch with our guests and are always happy to offer ideas on things to do and places to visit. We're busy folks, so we can't make many promises, but when we're around we love to connect with folks from far and wide.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood has blown up in the time that we've lived here. Amazing graf work everywhere you turn, new bars and restaurants opening every day. Independent galleries and music venues, vintage stores, loft parties. It's the place to be at the moment.

Getting around

Yes, the L train is just a couple blocks, and the JMZ train (which offers a great view of the city) is only a few more blocks away. So you always have transit options.

Other Things to Note

We do have a dog now. He is a full grown, shorthaired pitbull who wants nothing more than to be your friend. But If you are allergy prone or dog phobic then this may not be the place for you! Sorry!

  • We can totally recommend Candace's place for staying in buzzing Bushwick - the flat is really awesome and Candace and John are great hosts - very kind and laid back. We felt truly welcome and the room is great - there are maps and guides at disposition and they had good recommendations for us too. Two different metro lines are very near the flat, you can get quickly anywhere, and it was very easy to find it coming from the airport too, thanks to excellent directions and overall great communication with Candace. Their dog is really friendly and funny too! Thank you very much, we really enjoyed our stay!

  • Candace and John were amazing hosts! So welcoming, always willing to help us out with directions, etc and just generally cool people. The place was spectacular - clean, comfortable and super accessible. The photos definitely don't do it justice. Close to the L train and Roberta's, it was a perfect introduction to Brooklyn. Also, Buster was a pleasure to hang out with. He is social but very well behaved and Candace and John were quick to make sure he was never getting up to mischief. It was our first airbnb experience on our massive trip and it certainly set a high standard. I would recommend it to anyone!

  • Candace and John are awesome hosts; really welcoming and laid back. They were up for chill times, cool with us coming and going and even invited us out for Karaoke. The space is beautifully designed, warm and comfortable. They are fun, funky, generous and talented folks. The space is perfect for transport into Manhattan as well as exploring the eclectic and up and coming Bushwick area. Can't recommend a stay here highly enough.

  • Candace & John are great hosts. I was made to feel at home and their loft is very comfortable. Their place is in Bushwick, close to the Morgan Ave subway stop, restaurants, cafes etc. and a quick ride to Bedford Ave, Williamsburg or Manhattan.

I can't recommend these guys enough if you're looking to stay in Brooklyn!

  • Candace and John are best hosts ever! I had such an amazing time staying with them - they made me feel at home even before my arrival due to Candace´s excellent communication. Everything was perfectly organized upon my arrival and went so very smoothly even though they weren´t there in person at the time. Loved the room I was staying in - you can tell by the detail how much love was involved to make it as cosy and comfortable as it is. On their back yard porch you can find a quiet peaceful time right within plenty of plants and herbs planted. The area is brilliant and comes alive after sun sets with awesome restos, bars and stuff at night and coffee shops to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and wholewheat bagel the next morning. Always felt very safe traveling by myself. We had fun pot luck dinners and an exciting spontaneous adventure to the local Sewage Treatment Plant! One of my favorite days!

I can 100% recommend to stay with Candace and John! Miss you guys already!

  • Awesome. My 2 night stay with Candace, John and Sam was perfect. The space is amazing and the room was clean, comfortable and had cute decor. As a solo traveller from Australia, my hosts made me feel welcome and were interesting and friendly. I highly recommend this accommodation - it is cool, comfortable and in a great location. Thanks for having me guys x

  • The apartment is great, just like the photos. There is a tube station just round the corner which gets you to Manhattan is about 20mins or less. We only met Candace briefly but she was very helpful and friendly. No complaints at all, would love to stay there again when we next travel to NY.

  • Candace & John were really great hosts! We felt home immediately in their cool apartment and the cosy guestroom! They were really helpful giving tips and background info about exploring NYC and were very enjoyable to hang out with. We certainly would stay longer if we could!

  • Candace and John's apartment was wonderful! Me and my girlfriend Nina had a a great few days there, the loft was incredibly spacious and they furnished it really lovely and creative!
There was great communication in the lead up to our stay too. The loft is located in Bushwick next to the Morgan Av metro station in a really great neighborhood with a lot of bars, restaurants, designers etc. arround the corner.
But most of all, Candace and John are such great hosts & lovely and open minded people! We had simply our best airbnb experience ever in their place.
We will definitely stay again at their place next time we visit New York!
    Thank you for everything!
