About this listing
8 minutes to Vail & a million metaphorical miles! Vail gives you the world, but Minturn gives you Colorado. Enjoy Vail's world class vibe, then come soak up rays on the deck or in the hammock in the treehouse or gather round the fire pit for aprés.
Our home is in the historic and (self-proclaimed) funky town of Minturn, just 10 minutes from the hustle and hubbub of the world-class resort of Vail, Colorado. Get a genuine, laid-back Colorado mountain town experience without sacrificing the hoity toity of the nearby resort.
The cozy house has fenced front and back yards and is equipped for all able guests, including well-behaved, non-allergenic dogs (with prior approval). You will stay in the master bedroom with the recently remodeled master shower. The whole house is sunny and open with vaulted ceilings in the living room, dining room, and master bed and bath.
If you juuuust can't manage to pull yourself "away from it all," the office (with printer/copier/scanner) will keep you as connected as you need to be. And of course, there's free wifi.
Pack light and use the full-size washer & dryer. The gas faux wood stove cranks out plenty of warmth in the chilly months, and the home needs no air conditioning in the warm months other than open windows and the fresh mountain air.
You'll find a large TV with DVD player in the living room, but no cable or other TV service. But who needs TV with hi-speed wifi and the beautiful scenery out door and window?
Of course you can do the 10-minute drive or take a bus to Vail, but Minturn offers its own hospitality with a short walk to the cook-it-yourself Minturn Country Club, the famous Minturn Saloon at the end of the Minturn Mile (back country exit from Vail Mountain), and the locals' favorite, Kirby Cosmo's just across the street. Sticky Fingers bakery serves up breakfast and Vail Mountain Coffee, and Nicky's Quickie will lunch you up with some of the best gyros west of the Mediterranean.
Just as in our picture, we have two kids (ages 9 & 11), so be sure you're comfortable with pattering feet and the morning sounds of beginning a day.
There are also hens in the backyard. The ladies are cute and quiet, so they add a nice bit of urban farm ambiance without noise or smell.
Pets are OK, too, but due to some allergies in the family only non- or low-shedding doggies may be inside the house. We have a four-legged friend of our own; Bonnie would be thrilled to have company! Front and back yards are fenced, and there is an enclosed (but not heated) "mud room" in the back of the house where Fido can stay sheltered if need be. Of course some doggies just love the taste of fresh chickens, so restraint may be required for very strong and determined birders who could bust through a chicken fence.
If you want access to all the Vail action, restaurants, bars, galleries, shops, and skiing but still have a peaceful, comfortable, hometown stay, this is your place. Welcome home, to the House of Yess.
Make yourself at home! We'll make your breakfast, but feel free to keep food in and use the kitchen for cooking. Relax and socialize in the living room or dining room (great on sunny afternoons). Hang out in the back yard on the sunny deck, by the fire pit, or up in the tree deck.
Interaction with Guests
We love meeting people through AirBnB and probably spend more time than we should socializing. But we're also not intrusive, so quiet alone time is certainly supported.
We'd love to see you again. You get 10% off every time you return to the House of Yess. Just be sure to "inquire" about dates (don't make a booking request) so we can discount the rate before AirBnB locks it in.
Minturn is an old railroad and mining town painted with a bit of a resort brush. It's a town, not a resort, with old families, homes, and a real sense of community. Being next to Vail means we also get great shopping, dining, and entertainment for things just too funky for the haute Vail scene.
The bus stop is just outside our house. The local runs mornings and late afternoon/evenings, and you transfer to the bus going into Vail or Beaver Creek. It takes about 20 minutes to get to Vail, and bus fare is always $4 each way. Search EcoTransit for schedules and more.
You can walk anywhere you need to go in Minturn, as the farthest place to venture is just 1/2 mile away.
Other Things to Note
We've got chickens in the backyard who are quiet and cute. They produce a ton of eggs in summer and a scant few in the winter. If we've got freshies, come hungry. Got a dog, too (but she hasn't laid eggs yet.)
No smoking inside (outside's OK, but please respect neighbors who might be around).
No shoes inside, and approved pets should be cleaned off before entering.
Make yourself at home (except don't clean so much).
Be nice to the neighbor (maybe he'll invite you to his outdoor tiki bar).
Matt and Diana should be the spokespeople for AirBNB. They exemplify the spirit of the website, and shared not only their home, but a part of their lives with us. The experience of staying at the House of Yess was exactly what we had hoped, and more. My only regret is that we did not have more down time on our trip to visit with them for longer. I was glad that we had one mellow morning, when we got to hang out with Matt, and try to distract him from making breakfast. He still managed to put together one heck of an omelette, and provide us with a great idea for where to go find a serene lake to go canoeing for the day.
As for the amenities: The bed was extremely comfortable, and the pebbly shower floor did feel amazing, as promised. They held a parking spot right out front for us, since we had a late night arrival, it was nice not to have to search for parking. I know this is going to sound funny, but the ceiling fan was also a nice touch, to keep the room fresh. Since we got in late, they had mapped out a path to the room with paper cut out arrows and notes. Then there was a great binder full of information, and a sweet welcome basket waiting on the bedside table.
We departed super early, too. But not before Diana poured us a fresh cup of cold brew, and packed us a to-go bag of bananas and yogurt. Seriously, what more could you ask for?
They literally thought of everything. Do yourself a favor, and if you're even thinking of booking here... just do it.
I've stayed in a few Airbnb's over the last few years, but I have never experienced the comfort that I had at Matt's home in Minturn. From the moment I walked in the door and the rooms opened up before me, each one more beautiful then the last, with high ceilings, and a large floor plan, I knew I had landed somewhere special. Matt and Diana have a knack for decorating, and creating a homey atmosphere. Well, it is their home, and their two children Piper and Duncan were a delight! But, the icing on the cake was their little dog Bonnie, who coaxed my old dog into playing with her. They made fast friends, and that's uncommon for my old boy. I think he had a crush on her. The bedroom was beautiful, with a door to the deck. I loved the bathroom, with a big walk-in shower, and a tub with all the accoutrements for a long soak. The backyard chickens made the most endearing sounds, that lulled me to sleep one day when I laid down for a nap. Every morning I was treated to the most delicious breakfast. Sometimes with fresh eggs from the hens. I instantly liked Matt and Diana, so easy to talk to, genuinely friendly and warm. They have traveled extensively, and the souvenirs of their travels are placed around the house. I found that fascinating. The kids invited me up into their tree house, and we talked about books. Piper is quite the climber, and she easily scaled the tree another 30 feet up! Very cool. I stayed three nights with the Scherr's, and vowed to return for ski season. These folks know how to make a person feel welcome, and I feel like I've made some new friends! Definitely a five star rating!
Another fantastic weekend in Minturn! The Scherr's have a knack for making me feel like a family member each time I return. They are gracious, kind, and fun-loving. And they cook you fresh eggs! What more could a girl want?
Kearse and I had a great time with Matt, Diana, Piper, Duncan, and Bonnie! They have such a cool house with a tree house in the backyard. And there was a neighborhood block party going on while we were there so we got to meet all the neighbors! We didn't have to worry about our dog because they had a good fence and their kids and dog played with him the whole time. They gave us great recommendations for food, and things to do around town and in Vail. The breakfast that Diana cooked for us was incredible! The bedroom and bathroom were both clean, and comfortable! We didn't want to leave, my girlfriend was begging me to take a sick day and stay longer.
I had a wonderful time with Matt and Diana and can only join the praise in other reviews.
Their easy-going ways, rich travel experience and open mind makes for most interesting, entertaining conversations . I enjoyed being treated like part of the family, at the same time I could have all the privacy I wanted.
The guest room has a large, comfortable bed, a sliding door opens onto a terrace with afternoon sun. The adjoining bathroom has a cozy bathtub and large walk-in shower; soft towels, hair dryer, all the amenities.
Matt let me use the conservatory, a great place to chill out in after a day on the slopes; basking in the afternoon sunlight and watching the chicken in the backyard is blissful.
Matt's and Diana's intimate knowledge of all things skiing led to me to wonderful trails and slopes.
There is lots more to mention ... the folk at the local bar across the street, the latest talk of the town, s'mores over campfire ... enjoy finding out yourself :-)
Thanks Matt and Diana, say hi to the kids, I hope to see you again!
J'ai passé un excellent séjour chez les Scherr. La maison est très confortable et la famille est très accueillante. C'est certain que j'y retournerai!
Matt offers a beautiful room in a lovely mountain town, close to several ski resorts and other outdoor opportunities. The room and attached private bathroom are very nice and clean. Matt provides a delicious full breakfast and welcomed us in the evening with a few local craft brews. His family are true hosts and made us very welcome in their house. They offered useful local knowledge on town amenities, activities, and any other needed information
Unfortunately, AirBNB doesn't let you give more than five stars. I rarely have wanted to give more than five stars, but this spot deserves it.

About the Host, Matt
We are a traveling family deeply in debt at the hospitality bank. We have played guest all over the world and need to pay back the kindness and generosity we have been given.
We live in a phenomenal community in a great house, but still find we appreciate home better by leaving it occasionally. And when we're home, we'd love to bring the world to us. We recently returned from a 14-month family sabbatical in Ecuador and miss that permanent foreigness that makes us appreciate home and the possibility of the world.
The kids, ages 8 & 10, are mostly harmless and don't bite (hard). We have a wee lil' pup and a handful of chickens, so guests may bring their dog with prior approval (no dingos; there are kids in the house). We're set up for good cooking and have secret access to great wine and gourmet cheese.
Our goal is to have you leave wishing you weren't.
