Extra spacious

Guests love this home’s spaciousness for a comfortable stay.
Get out of the city and enjoy the beauty of Alaska, 20 minutes outside of town, in this remodeled contemporary home. Surrounded by a native birch forest on 8 acres, the house backs up to the extensive Cranberry Trail system for year round non-motorized recreation. Inside, the house is full of cozy spaces to enjoy: curl up next to the wood stove with a great Alaskan book, watch chickadees flit at the bird feeder, listen to vintage records, or unwind in the meditation/sleep pod.

The space
The main entry to the house is the ground-level basement door from the gravel parking area in front of the house. The daylight basement is the entertainment area of the home, with a 55" television and streaming services (Hulu, HBOMax, Disney+, Netflix, Amazon, & more), and retro NES gaming system. The futon couch converts into a full-sized bed with all linens provided. The main full bath is also in the basement, with a custom walk-in stone shower room. The basement also includes a wood stove, wood storage, a stacked front loading washer & dryer, and a coat/shoe area near the entry door.

Spiral stairs lead from the basement to the main level, which contain the kitchen and living room. The kitchen is fully equipped and partially stocked with basic foods. There is a full refrigerator/freezer, electric stove & oven, microwave, and beverage area stocked with everything to make coffee and tea, along with a full selection of spices. A kitchen island with two stools is a comfortable place to hang out, along with a full dining room table next to the kitchen with seating for six. The living room has a loveseat and chair seating for four around a coffee table, next to another entertainment center stocked with a stereo with Bluetooth access, a record player, lots of vintage records, games and puzzles, and a wide selection of books and Alaska specific literature. Several poufs provide additional seating.

The upstairs spiral stairs lead to a wide open hallway with a dedicated desk, manual typewriter, and yoga mats, leading to two small bedrooms. The left bedroom has a full-sized bed, small desk, and padded bench overlooking the forest, and closet area. The right bedroom is tiny and has a full bed and a built into the ceiling is a twin-sized meditation/sleeping pod. There is also a small desk and closet area in this room. Opposite the bedrooms upstairs is a small half bath.

A large deck wraps around the front, east, and rear of the house, which is equipped with outdoor furniture and gas BBQ in the summer. A small grass lawn surrounds the house, including flower gardens, berry bushes, and a fire pit. The house is located on eight acres, which is primarily wild and forested with birch trees and other native species. The property backs up to Cranberry/O'Connor Creek Trail System, which is 17+ miles of public non-motorized trails.

Guest access
Guests have access to the majority of the property. We encourage guests to enjoy the great Alaskan outdoors and explore the property and surrounding trails. The following areas are off-limits to guests: basement mechanical room and the outside shed.

Other things to note
Our pricing algorithm is set to encourage longer stays with escalating discounts for stays of 3-nights and longer. Practically, this results in an elevated price for a 2-night stay, and each additional night is offered at approximately 50% of the nightly price for the 2-night stay.

Neighborhood highlights

The “Birch Perch” is located at the end of a quiet, privately owned gravel road with friendly neighbors, most of whom have lived on this road for over thirty years. The house sits on an 8 acre forested parcel and is adjacent to an extensive non-motorized trail system that crosses a mixture of privately and publicly owned land. Feel free to wander around the woods in both the summer and winter, but please stay in existing trails and respect no trespassing signs.

As far as businesses in the neighborhood, a historical general store and landmark restaurant/bar (Goldstream General Store and Ivory Jacks) is located about 2.5 miles west along Goldstream Road, with a community garden, small playground, ball field and outdoor basketball court located next to the businesses. Otherwise it is a 7 mile drive to University of Alaska Fairbanks/College, 8 miles to Fox or 11 miles to Downtown Fairbanks.
