Interaction with Guests
We live on O'ahu so you will be on your own. We are constantly available by phone to answer questions or facilitate your stay.
Our neighborhood is characterized by quiet streets. There are many forested lots which gives the area a country feel, but we have several full time neighbors to make you feel safe. Our street has a dead end so the only people who pass by live on the street. There are no street lights making the star gazing incredible.
Our recently built, finely furnished home is centrally located on the windward side of Hawaii Island. Fly into Hilo airport and enjoy visiting beautiful tropical forests, the volcano, and black sand beaches. You might even be able to see glowing lava at night a short drive from the house.
The "hele on" bus stops a couple of blocks from the house. It comes infrequently so you will definitely need a car to stay here. You can park your car in the driveway. Ask about car rental, we have a car parked in the garage available for rent.
Other Things to Note
On Hawaii island many stores do not provide bags for your shopping, you may wish to put a few in your luggage if you plan to shop before you check in. There are reusable bags provided at Hale Lau Hala.
*Children age 6 and younger will need a child's booster seat in the State of Hawaii.
Hale Lau Hala is smoke and pet free making it safe for our guests with allergies.
This is our personal home, please treat it as the beautiful retreat it is. Sound travels easily through the forest. Be respectful of our neighbors.
Our cleaning fee covers regular housekeeping. Please take care of the small things yourself: wash your dishes, wash laundry in excess of 2 loads, and leave only one large bag of trash. Deliver excess trash to the "Transfer station" Hawaii speak for "the dump" Check out how the locals recycle everything from appliances to rubbish. There is no trash pick-up in the country.
We spent 3 days with my family of 6 . House is lovely, very spacious 3 bedrooms and perfectly clean. Good location for volcano and tide pools. Cathryn is a great host with prompt reply prior to arrival. She even has a book for visiting tips during our stay. We highly recommend if you look for a quiet place.
We spent a nice four nights at Hale Lau Hala. Cathryn was a great host with great communication prior to our arrival, and was able to accommodate a last minute booking change. House was clean with enough room for 6 adults, and the neighborhood is quiet (except for the Coqui frogs which was expected). Location is good for visiting places north of Hilo but also Volcanoes National Park. Had a good time and would recommend others stay here as well. Thank you, Cathryn.
Hale Lau Hala is a gorgeous get away. It's a well appointed 3 bedroom house with all the amenities. It's also in a perfect spot for visiting Pahoa and the beautiful eastern tip of the big island. Catherine was very helpful and accommodating when I needed to change the reservation.
The house was extremely clean, which pleased all of us, especially my mother in law. Cathryn also kindly had the windows opened and fans going to have the house nice and cool when we arrived. New fridge was nice to see and use. Appreciated the tip by Cathryn to visit the Sunday market. It was great, we bought a lot of produce to eat during our stay, and local gifts to take back. It's a very well-kept house in Pahoa and recommend it to others who don't mind not being right by Hilo.
The place is beautiful, neat and fully equipped. All rooms are spacious, beds are comfortable and everything works fine. I definitely recommend it if you're looking for a peaceful and comfortable place. Thanks Cathryn!
