Hale Lau Hala is in beautiful setting, nestled between two forested lots. It is lovely, fresh, clean furnished 3 bedroom house. Located minutes from restaurants, grocery, and shops, enjoy the feeling of the country and the calm of Hawaii Island.
Welcome to our personal get-a-way home on Hawaii island. Our recently built, finely furnished home is centrally located on the windward side of Hawaii Island. Fly into Hilo airport and enjoy visiting beautiful tropical forests, the volcano, and black sand beaches. You might even be able to see glowing lava at night a short drive from the house.
Hale Lau Hala is in a quiet area flanked by forests and with other single family homes across and down the street. You will live like a local, close to shopping and services, but away from it all.
We provide you with a customized (website hidden) map of nearby locations to visit, things to do and see, and places to eat. From the house it is a short jog to the ocean past lush greenery and sweeping views of the ocean down rocky embankments.
Our home is outfitted with all you need to enjoy your stay, including a washer / dryer, internet and flat screen TV. The kitchen has all the conveniences of home; microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, rice cooker, cookware, dishes, flatware, etc.
Hale Lau Hala has real beds for six. A queen in the master, king in the second room, and two twin size beds in the third room. There is also a pack and play baby bed and a queen sized air mattress.
Come enjoy the fresh air, star-filled night sky, and lush greenery at Hale Lau Hala. It has been one year since we started opening our island style vacation home to guests from far away places such as Japan, Germany, New Zealand, as well as visitors from California to New York. It has been fun hosting guests as they enjoy a refreshing visit to "The Big Island."
Hale Lau Hala is a non-smoking, no pets residence.
Entire home, 12,000 sq. ft. yard, snorkles, everything from beach towels to coolers.
We live on O'ahu so you will be on your own. We are constantly available by phone to answer questions or facilitate your stay.
Our neighborhood is characterized by quiet streets. There are many forested lots which gives the area a country feel, but we have several full time neighbors to make you feel safe. Our street has a dead end so the only people who pass by live on the street. There are no street lights making the star gazing incredible.
The "hele on" bus stops a couple of blocks from the house. It comes infrequently and you will definitely need a car to stay here.

We had a great 10 days here in this very comfortable and almost new house. The house has all you need and is on a beautiful part of the island. Puna is a hardly explored part of the Big Island, with so much to offer.
Thanks for letting us stay in your beautiful house!
The house was in perfect shape, everything you need to make your stay perfect is there. The kitchen is fully equipped which makes cooking really easy and enjoyable. There is a lot of space in the house which is a big plus when travelling with a family. Only thing missing is a lanai. The house is on a dead end street and is very quiet, only thing that you hear in the night are the frogs.
Very tastefully furnished house with all the needed amenities: WiFi, phone, washer and dryer, and fairly close proximity to volcano activities as well as tropical beaches on the red road. Good staging spot for day trips. Did not spend time hanging out there. Make sure you grocery shop before you get there.
Cathryn is a great host! and the house is awesome! very updated and clean, having amenities like wifi and cable were great on rainy days and for schedule online excursions in Hawaii.
The best condo I lived in Hawaii~ very clean and neat~ everything is convenient for us and they have almost everything in the kitchen, which makes us cook happily! And there are also nice neighbors who send a lot of oranges to us~ really appreciate to them! Thank you!
Cathryn's home is amazing. It is not only beautiful, tasteful, it is super clean. Also - the sounds of birds chirping constantly when you go to sleep is a gentle reminder of how you are living amidst nature, and was definitely the favorite part of our stay. It almost felt like being in the middle of a jungle without the annoyance of cabins. I would HIGHLY recommend this place for your next Hilo visit!
I stayed this place for 2 months (!) with my newly retired mother and my aunt. We cooked lots, and friends from New York often visited us, and they all liked this house setting in tropic. I chose Hilo side of the island because we thought we can live like locals here, and this house was perfect! We became friends with Hawaiian weaving teacher and my mother and aunt did a workshop every week in this house. (Cathryn had hala trees in the garden from which we made Hawaiian bracelets.) From July to Aug, we often had rain in the morning or late afternoon, but it always stopped without continuing. There were a pattern, and they always rain for a really short time.
The house is located on a nice quiet road, and neighbors were very friendly and attentive. (Some are Japanese like us) The house location is easier access to everywhere on the east side of Big Island because it situates in between Puna, Hilo, and Volcano. There are no beach in walking distance, but there are amazing Kapoho tide pool in 20 min drive to enjoy snorkeling. We went there almost every other day. You need a car on Big Island anyway, so 20 min drive was nothing. When we go snorkel, we drove through Puna jungle (no 4WD needed), which was really nice. You can also bike there. Also, we went to Ecstatic Dance at Kalani every Sunday, or Kalapana night market every Wed. There are many events, people, and places to enjoy the nature. (I also recommend Richardson Beach Park near Hilo to swim with turtles.)
It was always a surprise for new visitors to hear the sound of Coqui frogs at night, but we really enjoyed the dynamics of it. (My boyfriend is a musician!) We had more than 10 guests over 2 months, and none of them complained but accepted as amazing phenomenon.
For food, we went to Island Naturals for organic ingredients nearby or biggest KTA in 30 min drive. And fresh fruits and vegitables at several farmers merkets. There are some nice restaurants around Pahoa in 15 min drive too.
I want to continue to write more, but overall, this house is a really good base to be an active in Big Island. Mahalo.
Thanks Ei for your nice review. We really enjoyed hosting you and your family. I am so glad you had enough room in our house to share it with other guests from far away places during your extended stay. Please contact me anytime should you or a friend wish to come back again. Much aloha, Cathryn
This house is beautiful and has everything you need! We took a special trip to the big island to watch the lava flow into the ocean. This house was the perfect location to the boat docks and perfect for sight seeing. We were very comfortable and we hope to return in the future. Excellent value for the price!
(Soothing sounds of coqui frogs will lull you to sleep, ear plugs are available if needed)
We loved our stay at Hale Lau Hala. The house is really beautiful and so spacious. Everything was immaculate, clean and perfect. And Cathryn is super nice and easy to deal with. She had great tips for where to eat, when to avoid traffic and much more. It was super helpful. The sounds at the house were absolutely phenomenal; so many birds and especially frogs at night. It was just beautiful. I got the best sleep ever there--I'm not exaggerating. I truly missed it when I got back.
