Bring your sleeping bag and recharge in this tiny cabin surrounded by cedars and pines! Ursa Micro is a relaxed getaway on a rural acreage in upstate New York. Originally created as a writer's retreat, the cabin is built from reclaimed materials. It has a fire ring, a sleeping loft with a ladder, an outdoor kitchen, a composting toilet, and an outdoor camping shower. Use it as a base for exploring the Southern Tier and the Finger Lakes, or just rest and have coffee and enjoy the woods.

The space
Ursa Micro is a clean and bright one-room tiny cabin that uses its outdoor space to feel much bigger. It's built mostly from reclaimed materials, like deconstructed pallets, spare materials from friends' building projects, logs and poles from our own property, and so on. It's on the back half-acre of our two-acre property.

Inside, there's a little main room with lots of light, with a sleeping loft up above that is only accessible by ladder. Under the awning outside, there is an outdoor kitchen with a two-burner propane stove, a mini-fridge, and a French press for coffee. Down a stone path is an outdoor camping shower and a clean, airy composting toilet. In the clearing is a beautiful campfire area with chairs and benches.

Up the ladder inside the cabin is a sleeping loft with a thick, full-size memory-foam mattress. Down below, there's a smaller bed where one person can sleep, or just sit during the day and enjoy the natural light, nap, or drink a cup of coffee. Under the south-facing window is a beautiful and well-lit space for reading or working on a laptop.

The cabin does not have running water, but we provide all the water you need for drinking, cooking, and washing. You can heat water on the propane stove and have a nice, hot shower, even on chilly mornings. In the outdoor kitchen, we provide the basics for preparing meals (pot, pan, dishes, basic utensils). Everything is well-lit for use in the evenings. If you like, you can cook on the fire, too; we have a nice, clean fire ring area where you can roast hot dogs and marshmallows and listen to the sounds of the forest.

During the daytime, you might see our family, friends, and pets through the trees, out and about on the back porch and the back yard, and you're welcome to come and say hi. Overall, though, we respect your privacy and will be happy to give you all the space you need. We hope you'll have a great time staying at Ursa Micro!

Guest access
All of the space around the cabin is all yours to use and explore. There's a pretty clear demarcation between the cabin area, our house and backyard, and the big forest farther back, but we'll be happy to show you around if you like. Once you walk from your parking spot to the path leading to the cabin, you'll be in your own private space.

Other things to note
Please make sure you understand the following things:

Starting in 2023, we don't provide linens for the bed, so make sure you bring your sleeping bag!

While we provide water, the cabin does not have running water. We provide containers of cooking/washing water, as well as filtered drinking water.

The camping shower is a dedicated area, but doesn't have running hot water; you heat water on the stove and pour it in. If it's cold or raining, it might be a brisk and adventurous experience.

We just want to be clear on these points so that the cabin lives up to your needs and expectations!

Neighborhood highlights

We live in a rural residential area on two acres of land, and we back up to wild forest about a half-mile deep. From our house, you can see a few neighboring houses at a distance. In our neighborhood, it's not uncommon to see deer, turkeys, foxes, coyotes, bald eagles, porcupines, and bears. Ursa Micro is out on the back of our property, where you can occasionally hear cars passing on the road, but where often, you'll also hear owls calling to each other in the woods.
