About this listing

A Taste of Traditional Japan, in a Truly Extraordinary Natural Setting. No Adjacent Homes...Surrounded by Trees...Ocean Views.

Western-style breakfast available for 700 yen per person.

(Separate 4-Bedroom Guesthouse Available.)

The space

Our hand-crafted Main Lodge and adjacent Guesthouse offer the serene beauty of old Japan, with all the comforts of modern life.

The Magical Inn was originally built for the director of a national hospital. In honor of his long service, the director was given permission to craft these two landmarks in the national forest, overlooking a remarkably pristine coastline near the mouth of Tokyo Bay. There are no adjacent homes...just incredibly lush greenery and views of blue ocean.

A setting like this in Japan, just 20 km from Kamakura and an hour from the center of the world's largest city, is truly extraordinary.

This listing focuses on the Magical Inn's Main Lodge, which offers four sleeping rooms, each of which normally accommodates from two to six people with plush futons. You will share a comfortable sitting area, kitchen facilities, bath, and a garden surrounded by lush forest.

Notes:

* All "Magical Inn" listings are the same location. Airbnb can't list multiple rooms (and a home) in one listing, so we maintain three. We have more than three rooms, however, so if a calendar says "unavailable," just send a note via "Contact Host" and we'll take care of you.

* There are more pricing options as well. Rates shown here are for one or two adults sharing the same futon. If you have more adults, kids, or need more beds, just let us know, and we will create a custom quote.

* The Navy base is eight miles away, and there's easy public transport.

The Main Lodge has four rooms....

The Grey Room: eight-mat size (one mat = 1.7 square meters / 18 square feet). Sleeps up to three, with a shared toilet.

The Blue Room: six-mat size, sleeps two, with sink en suite and a shared toilet.

The Green Room: six-mat size, sleeps two, with sink and toilet en suite.

The Tatami Room: 12 mats, sleeps up to six, with bathroom and toilets on a separate floor.

The Main Lodge is a Japanese-style inn, offering private sleeping rooms, shared bathroom facilities, as well as communal dining and socializing areas.

Around the inn, there are a few nice restaurants and bars within walking distance, and scores within easy taxi/bus range.

With prior arrangements, you can order a full BBQ set-up in one of our expansive gardens (5,000 yen). We regularly host parties, day or evening, with guests enjoying clear skies and stars while sitting on hand-made wooden benches around a fire.

One of the nicer beaches in the Kanto region lies 300 meters below the inn. This is not a Caribbean beach, but as the photos show, it's lovely in its own right. There's a paved path which runs for miles along both rocky and sandy shore. A legendary windsurfing spot -- home to Japan's national champions -- is just a few minutes down the road. This area is also great for paddleboards and kayaks.

Truly Tolkien forest hiking trails surround us, and will take you to the famous Kurihama botanical garden at the top of the mountain.

If you require more room or added privacy, we have a separate four-bedroom Guesthouse next door to the inn. This is an unusually large home, in the modern Japanese style.

Inside the Guesthouse, you will find a very large living and dining area, flooded with sunlight, overlooking a private garden with relaxing views of forest and sea.

The Guesthouse kitchen is spacious and fully equipped.

The master bedroom features a large Western bed, with enough additional space to set up a futon for young kids. There are two large tatami rooms available for sleeping, plus another Western-style bedroom, all with plush futons.

The Japanese bathroom is augmented by two toilets, one downstairs, and one up.

With prior arrangements, you can book all rooms of the Guesthouse for exclusive use by your family, or a large group. Ask about lower rates for long-term stays.

Most guests travel to the inn from Tokyo -- wither from via Shinagawa Station (one train) or from Shibuya Station, with a transfer at Yokohama. By either route, it takes roughly 55 minutes to arrive at the local train stop, Keikyu-Kurihama Station. From there it's 5 minutes to our place via taxi, or 15 minutes via bus and a short 200-meter stroll.

There's a small market within a five-minute walk. There are major supermarkets and drugstores about one kilometer from the inn, along the bus route, and also adjacent to the train station.

Your on-site host is Kiyoe, who speaks English as well as Japanese.
We request that you reserve at least two or three days in advance, so we have time to chat and prepare for a great holiday.

The Magical Inn attracts creative personalities from around the globe, and folks with many decades of travel experience tell us that there is no better retreat in Japan. You may not want to return to "civilization."

Guest access

All guests have access to sitting and dining areas, gardens, and spacious bath/shower rooms, which are shared in contemporary Japanese style. Guesthouse visitors have access to a kitchen.

Interaction with guests

We prefer to be in contact with you before you arrive, to ensure the best possible holiday. We are generally available to offer answers and suggestions during your stay, though of course our days can be busy. We often socialize at the inn, but also respect any guest's wish for privacy.

We enjoyed the stay a lot. The host was friendly, and flexible, warm person. The area is so quiet, nice nature. We can see the lightning bags which is so precious only in the very clean nature. 日本語も、もちろん大丈夫です。ホタルをみました。素敵な滞在でした。

We had a wonderful stay at the guest house and were lucky enough to have the whole house to ourselves. After two busy weeks of travel throughout Japan, it was nice to have a quiet, spacious place to relax. We stayed in the master bedroom which was quite comfortable and bigger than our living room at home. We loved visiting the beach and walking around the neighborhood. Jude was a great host and told us about the best places to eat and provided charming hand-drawn maps of the area. She told us about a fabulous 100 yen store and the closest place to find groceries. She gave us coffee when we forgot to buy some. The only trouble we had was with spiders--they were quite a bit larger than we were comfortable living with, so we were a little jumpy whenever one appeared in the house. We started giving them names and it became easier to coexist peacefully. If you visit the guest house, say hello to Christopher (he's the one with only seven legs.)

We were three. It was best place to relax, nice and cozy lodge, comfortable sofa, cool interior design. The lodge has garden. We had good time with my friends all night surrounding fire place. The location is very convenient, too. 5mins to the beach/bus stop, some lovely cafes beside the beach. The host, Jude was always very nice. She made coffee in the morning and we had chats with her. I love that small moments. She gave us very mysterious to climb up the hill, it was also short cut to visit big park. That reminded us the exiting feeling back to a little kid.

The Magical Inn was absolutely fabulous - clean, welcoming, and perfect in very way. It was located on the side of a hill filled with abundant bushes and trees, - allowing us to see lots of butterflies and birds and feeling like we were in a forest. The neighborhood was quiet and the Magical Inn had a wonderful view of the ocean and all the ships going out to sea. Jade who lives in the house next door and who manages the house was very very helpful - We slept upstairs in the Western bed, our friends slept downstairs in the more traditional Japanese room. We loved having a place of our own, being able to cook our breakfast there and sit around and relax in our own place. We really did enjoy the Magical Inn and would certainly stay there if and when we come back to Yokosuka. Thank you for giving us a perfect 4 days there.
