About This Listing
A Taste of Traditional Japan, in a Truly Extraordinary Natural Setting. No Adjacent Homes...Surrounded by Trees...Ocean Views.
(Separate 4-Bedroom Guesthouse Available.)
The living and dining area of the main inn -- which overlooks garden, forest, and ocean -- is the perfect place to socialize with other guests and your hosts.
Our hand-crafted Main Lodge and adjacent Guesthouse offer the serene beauty of old Japan, with all the comforts of modern life.
The Magical Inn was originally built for the director of a national hospital. In honor of his long service, the director was given permission to craft these two landmarks in the national forest, overlooking a remarkably pristine coastline near the mouth of Tokyo Bay. There are no adjacent homes...just incredibly lush greenery and views of blue ocean.
A setting like this in Japan, just 20 km from Kamakura and an hour from the center of the world's largest city, is truly extraordinary.
This listing focuses on the Magical Inn's Main Lodge, which offers five sleeping rooms, each of which normally accommodates from two to six people with plush futons. You will share a comfortable sitting area, and a large dining table. On many Saturday and Sunday mornings, we serve a full Western breakfast -- including real drip-brewed coffee -- for 1,000 yen.
* We offer discounts for all multi-night stays. Just let us know your plans!
* All "Magical Inn" listings are the same location. AirBnB can't list multiple rooms at one inn, so we maintain three listings. We have additional rooms, however, so if the calendar says "unavailable" for your dates, please send a note via "Contact Host."
Main Lodge 2nd listing:
Separate Guesthouse listing:
The Main Lodge has three rooms suitable for singles or couples. On the first floor...
The Blue Room: eight-mat size, sleeps up to three, with a shared toilet.
The Green Room: six-mat size, sleeps two, with sink en suite and a shared toilet.
The Yellow Room: six-mat size, sleeps two, with sink and toilet en suite.
Upstairs, there are two spaces suitable for larger groups...
The Tatami Room: 10.5 mats, sleeps up to six, with shared toilets.
The Loft: 10-mat size, sleeps up to five, with shared toilets.
The Main Lodge is a Japanese-style inn, offering private sleeping rooms, a large shared bath and shower room with a panoramic view of the ocean, as well as the communal dining and socializing areas.
Around the inn, there are a few nice restaurants and bars within walking distance, and scores within easy taxi/bus range.
With prior arrangements, you can order a full BBQ set-up in one of our expansive gardens. We regularly host parties, day or evening, with guests enjoying clear skies and stars while sitting on hand-made wooden benches around a fire.
One of the nicest beaches in the Kanto region lies 300 meters below the inn. Miles of both rocky and sandy shoreline lead to a legendary windsurfing spot -- home to Japan's national champions -- just a few minutes down the road. This area is also great for paddleboards and kayaks.
Truly Tolkien forest hiking trails surround us, and will take you to the famous Kurihama botanical garden at the top of the mountain.
If you require more room than the Main Lodge provides, we have the separate four-bedroom Guesthouse, a large and modern Japanese-style home.
Inside the Guesthouse, you will find a very large living and dining area, flooded with sunlight, overlooking a private garden with relaxing views of forest and sea.
There's also a full kitchen available for your use.
The master bedroom features a large Western bed, with enough additional space to set up a futon for young kids. There are two large tatami rooms available for sleeping, plus another Western-style bedroom, all with plush futons.
The Japanese bathroom is augmented by two toilets, one downstairs, and one up.
With prior arrangements, the Guesthouse can be booked for exclusive use by your family, or a group. Ask about lower rates for long-term stays.
Most guests travel to the inn from Tokyo, via Shinagawa Station (or Shibuya Station, transferring at Yokohama). It takes roughly 55 minutes to arrive at the local stop, Keikyu-Kurihama Station. From there it's 5 minutes to our place via taxi, or 15 minutes via bus and a short 200-meter stroll.
Your on-site hosts are the well-traveled Jude Brand, originally from Oz, and "Mr. G," a bilingual Japanese gent. We request that you reserve a week in advance, so we have time to talk with you and prepare for a perfect stay.
The Magical Inn attracts creative personalities from around the globe, and folks with many decades of travel experience tell us that there is no better retreat in Japan. You may not want to return to "civilization."
Relax...share tales...have a great stay.
We had a wonderful time staying here. The house itself was quiet, clean, and spacious. The beach is very close and the hike through the forest was amazing. The nearby restaurants and bars were few, but charming and well worth the walk (I particularly liked Half-Moon, which has a veranda and a very friendly owner--however, his hours are irregular so it is best to call and see if he is open). Jude was a lovely host and responds very promptly to emails. I had a wonderful, relaxing time.
Great location and very friendly and welcoming host, really enjoyed my stay here. Was as described and portrayed on pictures.
We had a great time staying at the Magical Inn. The tatami room was lovely. Exactly what we were looking for.
We enjoyed interacting with Jude, the onsite host. She was friendly, interesting and helpful. We would definitely consider coming back to this location again for a getaway from Tokyo.
Jude and Mr. G were fantastic hosts. We stayed here for over a month and they were very accommodating.
Thank you Mike and Kiyoe for letting us stay at your place. We had a good time. Thanks also to Jude for helping us out if we needed anything.
