The Space

We have a 2-bedroom, 1-bath cabin in Lost River, WV. It has wireless Internet and heat (floor units). It is all on one level. It is a nice mix of local and DC weekenders. The first bedroom has a queen-sized bed. The second bedroom has two twin-sized beds. The living room has an IKEA sofa that folds out to a full/double.

This listing is adjacent to our other listing: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/894874 .

The cabin has a landline telephone but there is no cell phone reception. We have high-speed DSL Internet as well as streaming Netflix. We have a new, 39" LED tv. There is no cable television and local television stations are not available.

There is no air conditioning, but we have ceiling fans in each of the bedrooms and a ceiling fan in the living room (3 ceiling fans total).

Because this is our vacation home, we do not have trash or recycling pick-up. You will have to take your trash and recycling back with you.

We're roughly 10 miles from Wardensville, WV and roughly 30 miles from Moorefield, WV. Moorefield is a good town for Walmart, lunch, a movie theatre and bowling alley.

Very close by are two restaurants: the Lost River Grill (5 miles away) and The Guesthouse Lost River (3.8 miles away). The former is more low-key, and the latter is a bit more upscale.

Trout Pond Recreation Area (about 5 minutes away by car) provides a nice lake that you can walk around (and swim in during summer), a camping area, and a playground for kids.

SECLUSION UPGRADE: If you're interested in full seclusion, we can forego renting the other unit for an additional fee. (In other words, yes, you'd be paying us to *not* rent the other side.)

The nightly price quoted here INCLUDES 6% West Virginia Lodging Tax as well as 6% Hardy County Lodging Tax.

  • My Mom, sister, one-year-old niece, and dog stayed here for a two-night "girls vacation." It was perfect! The house was clean and well-stocked with bathroom and kitchen essentials. Although we didn't make use of the firepit this time around, we are excited to take advantage of it on a possible future trip! We'd happily stay here again, hopefully on a longer trip, and possibly renting the adjacent unit as well! Kelly was incredibly responsive and helpful as we prepared for the trip, and checked in on us when we got there. What a great mini-vacation!

  • Did not feel (email hidden)d up to the promise: untidy, carpet not vacuumed, cat box in master bedroom, bathroom stained by rusty water. Kelly agreed to let us stay in unit B after his friends left, and at that point the stay was much better. Unit B is very lovely but perhaps more suited to someone with older kids until they finish it off with window coverings and a railing on the stairs. I found Kelly to be very gracious about the whole affair, but would never have deemed unit A worth the $115 rental/$40 cleaning fee. The "tips and tricks" binder and email were very helpful, but a printed map would have been GREAT, as once you leave the cabin, there's no way you'll get cell signal. Eating at the Lost River Grill was the best dining experience we've had in so long! Homemade food, including the cream pies! And a really welcoming atmosphere. Beautiful area, very remote, nice and quiet. Once we got into unit B, the whole trip was very nice.

    Response from Kelly:

Let me respond to the guest's comments. 1) The cabin (Unit A) is our vacation home, and the ad clearly states that there is a cat on the premises. That means that the cat is there when we are there. Quite naturally there would be a litter box somewhere in the unit. I feel the guest simply did not read that part of the ad. However, I will make an effort to put it in a less conspicuous place! 2) Regarding being untidy and the carpet not vacuumed, those are subjective comments, of course. We had the unit professionally cleaned two weeks prior to the guest's arrival and we've had no guests during that time. 3) The water in the two units is well water. It is a reddish color, and yes, the guest is correct: the toilet in Unit A is stained from that water. When we built Unit B in early 2013 (Unit A was built in 2005), we installed a whole-house water filter that eliminates the rusty-colored water. Thus, you won't see the rust-color stains in Unit B (as the whole-house water filter was installed along with the new toilets). As for the rust-color toilet stains in Unit A: there's nothing that we can do about it unless we decided to replace the perfectly-good toilet with a new one which seems like a waste of money. :-) 4) Unit B (which we offered to this guest and her family to use after the complaints) will never have a handrail on the stairs (the wall is sufficient; we have three young children ourselves) nor will we have window coverings. This is not a hotel room where you hope to draw the curtains and sleep until noon. It's a rural place where you wish to see some wildlife, feel the sun coming into the bedrooms in the morning, have morning coffee on the deck and an evening cocktail on the deck, and take a stroll around the nearby lake! 5) Whether the guest felt the rental was "worth the price" or not is also quite subjective. Next time she can bargain shop to find another place. If in fact we are overpriced, the market will tell us that by not giving us any rentals! 6) The comment about the lack of maps is a good one: yes, we'll certainly rectify that the next time we go out!

  • My family had the opportunity to stay at Jack and Kelly’s home over Memorial Day Weekend and we had an amazing time! The location of the home is exactly what we wanted, private and surrounded by nature and wildlife. We live in downtown DC so being able to drive only two hours and be completely away from it all is such a treat. The unit is just as described. The location of the home is pretty isolated and there is no cell phone coverage but the house itself is has all the conveniences you will need as well as a wireless connection so you’re not completely out of touch. Jack and Kelly provide everything for you to feel right at home. I recommend stopping in Front Royal, VA for all of your essentials as there are no convenient stores or pharmacies for a last minute purchase once you get to Lost River.

The property is wonderful for a family to get away, listen to the birds or unwind after a long day hanging out at Trout Pond Recreation Center. Trout Pound is part of the Washington National Forests and it is a wonderful place to spend the day outdoors with the family. My husband is an RC enthusiast so he was able to play with his remote control boat in the lake, which he loved! It was too cold to go for a swim at the man-made beach, but the kids enjoyed walking around the lake, throwing pebbles and just being outdoors. There is also a great playground at the park where they spent hours jumping around and having fun. Overall we had a really fun, relaxing weekend outside of the city and can’t wait to go back!

  • Situated within the Lost River community, we were surrounded by quietude, serenity and all the beauty of nature. This cabin is a perfect weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of DC. Kelly and his husband ensure that the cabin is a home away from home; Kelly was wonderful to work with in setting up this last minute get-away. The interior is simple and inviting. The porch is perfect for sitting and talking, or taking in the morning with a cup of coffee. We will definitely be back, next time to rent the whole cabin and bring friends to enjoy this rural retreat. Thanks for a wonderful weekend away.

    Response from Kelly:

We are currently building an addition to our West Virginia property.
While there was no construction occurring during the expected stay of our
guest (as the builders were all taking the week off to celebrate
Thanksgiving and go deer hunting), the guest decided that he did not want
to stay with all the construction debris nearby. I attempted to find him a
replacement property (I offered to pay the difference in price so his
out-of-pocket costs would be exactly the same), but he decided to return
home instead. We provided him a complete refund, including the Airbnb
fees. For what it's worth, we went out (the two adults and three kids in
our family) and stayed for the duration of what the guest would have stayed
-- and had a great time!

  • The cabin is just as advertised. The kitchen is well equipped. This is a great place for anyone that enjoys hiking in the mountains or sitting around the fire at night. We enjoyed our stay.

Hi everyone, My name is Kelly and I live in Washington, DC, with my husband and our three recently-adopted children. We live across the street from the Eastern Market Metro Station and rent out our downstairs apartment. We've been renting our DC apartment (underneath our house) since March 2012; we've begun renting our WV cabins since Jan. 2013. For tourists to DC, we have -- I have to admit! -- a pretty superb location in that you can be on the National Mall (the Smithsonian Museums) in less than 20 minutes. Historic Eastern Market is just a few blocks away. My husband works for the federal government, and I work for a global consulting firm supporting the federal government on sustainability issues. We enjoy bbq'ing outside when the weather is nice, going to the park with the kids, and simply being parents.
