About this listing
Our custom built country home sits in a meadow and is surrounded by forest. The house is spacious and homey. It is a quiet and very private retreat from the outside world, but its just minutes from town. Please inquire before reserving.
A PRIVATE GET-A-WAY
Come down my quiet country lane and you will find our three story custom designed country home sitting in a beautiful meadow surrounded by the redwood forest. My seven acre property is bounded on two sides by Jackson State Forest and is completely private with forest all around yet its just minutes from town. Inside you will enjoy high ceilings, large beam construction and all the welcome of a warm country home.
Downstairs has a large well equipped kitchen, and open dining area with sliding glass door to the south facing deck. You can eat at the small round table in the kitchen or the larger dining table in the adjacent area. There is country antique furniture in the room, giving it old style charm.
Step down into a large living room with cathedral ceiling and a seven foot grand piano. You'll find a flat screen TV with DVR, Stereo and DVD. The couch here is a queen size hide-a-bed and there is an extra long twin bed in this room also.
UNIQUE BATHROOM WITH REDWOOD SHOWER
The downstairs bathroom sports a redwood shower with a window that looks out into the forest (there are no visible neighbors). A wooden counter top surrounds a hand thrown pottery sink.
SECOND FLOOR BEDROOMS
Upstairs you will find two large bedrooms. The master bedroom has a king size bed and country antique furniture. Glass french doors lead into the attached solar collecting greenhouse. This house was a solar house experiment from the 1980's. Heat is collected in the greenhouse and blown to a rock bed under the house which radiates heat up through the floor. It helps with the heat but we have added a forced air heating system as well. Antique french doors with leaded pane glass lead from the greenhouse into the bathroom. Across the hall from the bathroom is an additional bedroom with a queen size bed, lots of books a rocking chair and a comfortable recliner. A loft above (not accessible) provides and interesting design feature in the room. Both rooms have lots of light even with windows all around.
SECOND FLOOR BATHROOM
The bathroom features a Mexican paver tile floor deep blue tiled counter tops and a large tiled shower with bench. There is a 6' claw foot bathtub which adds oodles of charm to the room.
THIRD FLOOR/ATTIC BEDROOM
The third bedroom is in an attic space above the sun room with glass french doors that look out over the whole property and a skylight over the queen size bed so you can take in the night sky. You will feel like you are living with the birds as they fly by at eye level. Guests will need to use the bathroom on the second floor. Also the entrance to this room is accessed through the bathroom so it takes a bit of planning around privacy for other bathroom users
YURT/ART STUDIO CAN BE ADDED FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT
There is a 27 foot yurt/art studio on the property which can be added for an extra fee. It is full of art supplies and musical instruments, including another piano. This property provides many delightful ways to entertain yourself through out your stay.
INTERNET, CELL PHONES, HOUSE PHONE, MISC
The house has satellite TV and DSL internet. Rural internet is challenging, slower, no doubt than what you are used to but works well for email and searching the web. It doesn't work for streaming media. Cell phone coverage is spotty. There is reception for some cell phone companies, Verizon works in some areas outside the house. ATT only has reception in town. Guests can use the house phone for calling within the country. There are stair lifts available for those who would have trouble with stairs. When you register with airbnb the 11% county bed tax is already included in your room rate. Minimum 2 night stay.
You will be a 5-7 minutes drive from the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest and to Big River State Park, however, trails here are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.
PLEASE COMMUNICATE BEFORE BOOKING. THANKS.
No pets please. No drugs and no smoking of any kind. Moderate drinking OK. No Candles. It is fine if you need to arrive late. Just let me know ahead of time and we can make a plan for access. Quiet time after 10. It is very, very quiet here and neighbors would notice lots of noise at night and respond with alarm.
Marilyn was wonderful and extremely attentive to our family. We were a party of 5... Two adults and our children ages 7, 5, and 2.
The area is gorgeous... not Mendocino (which is nice), but Marilyn's neighborhood and setting. The trees tower around the house and the home is off and apart from any main road. We took a walk on the dirt/gravel country road that leads to her house and it was just as good as going to any redwood state park or anything like that. We found wild raspberries. Just lovely.
The home itself is a lot of fun. She has a grand piano and about 1000 piano books to play from if that interests you. The kids loved the hot tub - - - watch out for mosquitoes at this time of year though!
We didn't really use the kitchen facilities although Marilyn has a full set of whatever you might need.
The meadow and labyrinth beside the house are a lot of fun for the kids to run around and play.
It is a little strange to not have curtains on the windows... but then you remember your only neighbors are the trees and it's quite nice.
It is fun to see the Wall Street Journal ran a feature article on vrbos and had a snippet the interviewed Marilyn and her home included.
Marilyn likes to be there when you check in to make sure you are acquainted with the house and don't have any questions. She raised her 3 boys in this home.
I could see us returning and renting her home again someday.
We had a very pleasant stay in Marilyn's home. The five of us, including three in-laws from the UK had a great time. The setting was tranquil and stunning. Marilyn greeted us and showed us around the property upon our arrival and was very helpful. The house was comfortable and spacious and the kitchen had everything we needed.
It was the perfect Mendocino retreat. Thank you Marilyn!
Marilyn was a wonderful and responsive host. Her place is convenient to the wonderful and charming town of Mendocino. We especially loved walking the headlands and eating a Mendo Burger . We were a party of six and there was ample space for comfort and privacy if necessary. The bedroom at top can get very warm in the day but cools off quickly at night and is quite lovely. The other two bedrooms are nice size with comfortable beds. The kitchen, dining room, and living room are wonderful. Showers are great. Did not use tub but it looks amazing. Short soak in hot tub but very nice and clean. An extra bonus that is not listed is a basketball hoop on the garage that made for some fun games. Mendocino and the surrounding areas are not to be missed and Marilyn's home is a fine place to use as a base.
Marilyn was a wonderful host who took the time to show us around her beautiful home. The mosquitoes were unfortunately bad in the morning and evening, but Marilyn had us covered with an assortment of mosquito repellents. The beds were very comfortable and she even had toys and books for our young children to play with. It is a beautiful property close to a wealth of trails and natural beauty.
My only complaint would be that this is not a great house for young children. There are small, delicate antiques and collectibles throughout the home. We tried to be out of the home as much as possible, but during the times that we had to be inside, it was very difficult to keep our children from playing with all the items.
I love hosting families with young children and am so sorry it didn't go easily for your family here. I haven't had that response before when families with young ones have come and there have been many, including my own 2 & 5 year old grandchildren. The toys and the doll house are usually a big hit. The house is definitely not baby-proofed as the time of little ones living here is long past. I never mind guests putting things up and away from little hands if there is a problem. I'm really hoping your review won't stop others with small children from coming. And again, I'm really sorry it didn't work well for your family. It is my every intention that my house be welcoming and easy for young and old!
Wow, this is one of the best I've seen! We've spend a great long weekend with our friends and our toddlers (both around 2-2.5 years old).
This place is a great combination of lovely and yet cozy (great bedrooms and bath), spacious and full of light inside (the windows are so beautiful!), and even more spacious outside, friendly for toddlers (Marilyn paid extra attention to that - and provided us with toys and some other toddler stuff!) but also to their parents (the hot tub was awesome!)
Super recommended. We hope to be back again soon!
Marilyn is a good communicator and her house is gorgeous! We are already looking forward to returning sometime to soak in her hot tub again .
Marylin is extremely hospitable and he home is fantastic! We had a great time getting away from the hustle and bustle of our apartment. Marylin has a unique and beautiful home in the woods with great proximity to downtown Mendocino. I highly recommend her place.

About the Host, Marilyn
I've lived in Mendocino and on this property for over 30 years. I raised my three sons here in the forest and then founded and run FOR THE JOY OF IT! Creative Arts Center. Aside from my vacation rentals, I offer creative retreats and have an expressive arts therapy practice. I teach people how they can use the arts for healing, self discovery and as spiritual practice. In my own creative life I paint, make art quilts, write and play the piano. I love nature and take myself out into it as often as possible.
