The Space

Come down my quiet country lane and you will find our three story custom designed country home sitting in a beautiful meadow surrounded by the redwood forest. My seven acre property is bounded on two sides by Jackson State Forest and is completely private with forest all around yet its just minutes from town. Inside you will enjoy high ceilings, large beam construction and all the welcome of a warm country home.

Downstairs has a large well equipped kitchen, and open dining area with sliding glass door to the south facing deck. You can eat at the small round table in the kitchen or the larger dining table in the adjacent area. There is country antique furniture in the room, giving it old style charm.

Step down into a large living room with cathedral ceiling and a seven foot grand piano. You'll find a flat screen TV with DVR, Stereo and DVD. The couch here is a queen size hide-a-bed and there is an extra long twin bed in this room also.

The downstairs bathroom sports a redwood shower with a window that looks out into the forest (there are no visible neighbors). A wooden counter top surrounds a hand thrown pottery sink.

Upstairs you will find two large bedrooms. The master bedroom has a king size bed and country antique furniture. Glass french doors lead into the attached solar collecting greenhouse. This house was a solar house experiment from the 1980's. Heat is collected in the greenhouse and blown to a rock bed under the house which radiates heat up through the floor. It helps with the heat but we have added a forced air heating system as well. Antique french doors with leaded pane glass lead from the greenhouse into the bathroom. Across the hall from the bathroom is an additional bedroom with a queen size bed, lots of books a rocking chair and a comfortable recliner. A loft above (not accessible) provides and interesting design feature in the room. Both rooms have lots of light even with windows all around.

The bathroom features a Mexican paver tile floor deep blue tiled counter tops and a large tiled shower with bench. There is a 6' claw foot bathtub which adds oodles of charm to the room.

The third bedroom is in an attic space above the sun room with glass french doors that look out over the whole property and a skylight over the queen size bed so you can take in the night sky. You will feel like you are living with the birds as they fly by at eye level. Guests will need to use the bathroom on the second floor. Also the entrance to this room is accessed through the bathroom so it takes a bit of planning around privacy for other bathroom users

There is a 27 foot yurt/art studio on the property which can be added for an extra fee. It is full of art supplies and musical instruments, including another piano. This property provides many delightful ways to entertain yourself through out your stay.

The house has satellite TV and DSL internet. Rural internet is challenging, slower, no doubt than what you are used to but works well for email and searching the web. It doesn't work for streaming media. Cell phone coverage is spotty. There is reception for some cell phone companies, Verizon works in some areas outside the house. ATT only has reception in town. Guests can use the house phone for calling within the country. There are stair lifts available for those who would have trouble with stairs. When you register with airbnb the 11% county bed tax is already included in your room rate. Minimum 2 night stay.

You will be a 5-7 minutes drive from the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest and to Big River State Park, however, trails here are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.

  • Marilyn was very easy to communicate with. She met us on arrival and gave us a very thorough tour. You can tell she really takes a lot of pride in the house and cares a great deal for it.

The best part by far were the incredible windows and views. Next was the kitchen. She undersold how awesome it was -- we had a great time cooking in the house.

There is a lot of space. We had seven people but still felt like we had privacy and space to ourselves.

  • We had a wonderful visit at Marilyn's beautiful home. Gorgeous space in a peaceful setting. Perfect for our family reunion/vacation. Marilyn was a terrific host with great communication and warm personality. Would love to return!

  • Marilyn is a fine hostess and went above and beyond the call of duty to help facilitate our stay. We rented her home for a full week to host our family as we prepared for our daughter's wedding at Mendocino Woodland Camp. We reserved the house several months in advance and Marilyn was a generous resource person for our questions about the Mendocino area. Highlights of the house: 1. spacious, sunny kitchen 2. generous living room/dining room areas 3. clean, beautiful bathrooms with plenty of towels 4. hot tub 5. gardens and patio 6. Convenience to town.

  • Marilyn has a lovely home! My family and I had a wonderful time while staying there. The house is well-appointed and comfortable, and the setting is incredible. It's the perfect place for a relaxing weekend away.

  • Marilyn gave us what we had been languishing for since our kids are born: a weekend off grid far from the City's rumble. The house is as advertised, the meadow is ideal for kids and Mendocino's calm and magic scenery are beyond all expectations - the perfect place to replenish your souls and bodies.

If you are coming from the North, Highway 1 (on the way back..) is a great way to conclude your vacation. Thanks again, Marylin!

  • Beautiful locations, and stunning house! Sad we had to leave, but we hope to make it back in the future. Close to town, but also very secluded.

  • it is an amazing beautiful place and house. The lady is so nice. If you have plan to live in this area, please regard it as your first choice. If you have kids or do some cooking by yourself, you could find out all you need in her kitchen. We are very happy here for two days.

  • Marilyn's home is in the middle of a beautiful dense forest, quiet, and at night the stars are amazing. The hot tub is wonderful and good for stargazing. The house is spacious and comfortable, so if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life and explore California's northern coast this is an excellent choice. Marilyn was great in communicating and leaving lots of information about the area, the house, and things to do.

  • We had an amazing time in Marilyn's Redwood Retreat. The house is huge and beautifully decorated which gives the place a special charm. We never met Marilyn personally since she was out of town when we came but she prepared everything perfectly and it was very easy for us to find everything. I can highly recommend this place!

Expressive Arts Therapist
I've lived in Mendocino and on this property for over 30 years. I raised my three sons here in the forest and then founded and run FOR THE JOY OF IT! Creative Arts Center. Aside from my vacation rentals, I offer creative retreats and have an expressive arts therapy practice. I teach people how they can use the arts for healing, self discovery and as spiritual practice. In my own creative life I paint, make art quilts, write and play the piano. I love nature and take myself out into it as often as possible.
