This bright, spacious Marina flat (built in 1924) overlooks a park in the front and a sunny garden in the back. The building has been has been in our family for more than 50 years! We love sharing our home and amazing neighborhood with visitors.
Guests of all race, religion, ethnicity and gender orientation are welcome.
The flat has 3 bedrooms, 1 full bath, office, spacious kitchen and dining room, Pilates studio (your host's work space) and small garage. (Please note that there is NO living room.) There are beautiful hardwood floors, original tiles and molding throughout. Two of the bedrooms look out on a large garden with many beautiful trees and flowers, including lemon, magnolia, apple, camellia and roses.
BEDS: The master bedroom has a California king-size bed and also has a small half-bath (sink but no toilet). The office/back bedroom has a queen-size bed. The guest bedroom has a full-size sofa bed (suitable for one person and quite comfortable). There is also an air mattress available if needed, so altogether the apartment can sleep up to 2 couples and 2 singles.
While on a quiet, residential block, we are just one block from the hub of the trendy Marina /Cow Hollow district, a popular destination for shopping, restaurants and nightlife. A few minutes' walk has you enjoying beautiful San Francisco Bay, the Marina Green, Crissy Field, Fort Mason and the Presidio. The Golden Gate Bridge is also within walking distance, as are Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Ghiradelli Square and high-end shopping on Union and Fillmore streets. World-class restaurants abound - you are now entering foodie heaven!
We are well-served by bus lines to every part of the city and this is a perfect spot to use as a base for exploring all that San Francisco has to offer. Your host is a San Francisco native who loves to share the delights of her home town with visitors and will steer you towards the secret spots that you won't find in any guidebook.
There is a wireless connection, washer and dryer. Please note that there is NO TV! (Many guests have told me that that the lack of tv is a plus for them but I'm open to feedback about this.) Fresh towels and linens, Peet's coffee, muffins and fruit are provided.
THE PILATES STUDIO: Please note that, when I'm in town, I will be coming and going from the Pilates studio. I either work alone or with one client at a time. The studio is in the front of the flat, which shares an entrance with the rest of the apartment (see photos). We close the door and are quiet. In general this has not been an issue for past guests, but please do let me know if you have concerns about this, before you make a reservation. I will do my best to accommodate your needs.
Guests may only use the garage if their cars fit easily. It is a smaller city garage and not appropriate for SUV's or other large vehicles. If you will be renting a car, PLEASE keep this in mind when choosing your vehicle. The garage entrance is 89" wide and vertical clearance is 82". If your car is too wide to enter with a safe margin, you will be asked to park off-site, in accordance with street parking regulations. There is also a parking garage 2 blocks away.
The garden is available for short visits but not offered as a hangout space, as it is shared with the neighbors. However there is a beautiful park with a playground right across the street.
Guests are welcome to use the washer and dryer on the back porch. Please bear in mind that California is in a serious drought and only run the washer when you have a full load. If inspired, you can do a rain dance while waiting for your laundry.
Interaction with guests
Your host, Cathie sleeps in the apartment downstairs and is available if you have any questions.
Please keep in mind that Cathie works from the Pilates studio that is in front of the flat. This is the room that would otherwise be the living room. If you plan to be home a lot during the day and need a lot of privacy, this home-share may not be a good match for you.
Other things to note
This is a very kid-friendly location, with a park and playground right across the street!
Please note that, while children are welcome, they must be counted as guests if they are toddlers and up.
Upon arrival, please share these guidelines with everyone in your group. Thank you!
This is a quiet residential block with neighbors both upstairs and downstairs. Please be aware of your noise level, especially between 10 pm and 8 am. There are tons of great bars and restaurants in the neighborhood; please don't bring the party home. Thanks!
Likewise, if you have kids you are responsible for their noise level. The flat has beautiful hardwood floors, which means that little people running up and down the hall can be very loud for the neighbors. If your little ones are early risers, please be aware that your neighbors may still be sleeping.
Please take off your shoes inside the flat. There is a shoe bench next to the door where you can stow away your footwear.
There is no smoking allowed anywhere on the premises.
The Pilates and Gyrotonic studio in front of the flat is my work space. I teach people one-on-one on weekdays and will do my best to schedule hours that are convenient for you. Please don't attempt to use the equipment on your own. If you'd like to have a session during your stay that can be arranged. :-)
The garage is a smaller city garage and not suitable for larger vehicles such as SUV's and mini-vans. You might be able to fit it in, but many guests have damaged the garage door sensor in the process - so if you must come with a large vehicle, please plan to park it elsewhere.
We are lucky to have excellent drinking (tap) water from Hetch Hetchy reservoir in the Sierras. It's safe and delicious, so you don't need to buy plastic bottled water - thanks!
There is a house manual on the dining room table with more information about the flat. Please read it and share it with everyone in your group.
Accidents can happen. If something is broken or damaged during your stay (spills on the bedding, broken glasses, etc) please have the courtesy to let us know and we will use your damage deposit to replace it.
Thank you so much for being wonderful guests!
I'm a dance artist and teacher and own my own Pilates and Gyrotonic studio where I help people to live more happily in their bodies. Born and raised in San Francisco, I also lived in Amsterdam, the Netherlands for 15 years. I speak Dutch and a little bit of several other languages. My work has taken me all over Europe, the UK and South America. My favorite thing about living in San Francisco is the close proximity of both urban culture and breathtakingly beautiful nature. It's fun to introduce visitors to my favorite haunts and activities and see them get excited too!
