Lovingly Designed to Be in touch with Nature. We were featured in the New York Times: Building in Harmony in Bali. And now, Airbnb has selected us as one of their 12 properties in the world for our high standards. Let us pamper you in the Paddies.
Walk 6 minutes or ride a rented motorbike along a tropical river path (and then up 30 steps) to our first architect designed loft-like antique joglo (traditional Javanese teak house). Passiflora is set in the rice paddies of Penestanan, one rice paddy away from our other home, Jazmin, https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/385959 and diagonally across from Marguerite which has been freshly remodeled. We have also just added a salt water pool for the use of our guests!
Yay! Our village has no car access or car sounds but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and collared kingfisher birds, and it is still walking distance away from Ubud (20 minutes). See my Profile Page for other listings we have.
Passiflora is a reclaimed antique joglo brought in timber by timber from Java. Each of the joglos has its own personality and I have taken care to design every detail (I am an architectural designer) to make sure that staying in these old transformed houses is a one of a kind experience in luxurious simple ecological living (read some of the reviews).
As you walk into Passiflora, you'll be taken by the the super spacious loft -like feel (1000 sq. ft. /90 meters square) with the added pleasure of a antique teak timber roof above your head (25 ft./ 8 meters) and all reclaimed wood panels, carvings and doors! We have re used every board.
The roof is made of handwoven grass. But the sensibility is modern with an emphasis on comfort. There is no villa quite as uniquely in touch with nature as Passiflora and Jazmin in Penestanan.
Read on the daybed on the verandah, have a conversation in the living room then have a nap in the bedroom on the king-sized super comfortable bed overlooking the family temple. The kitchen is perfect for cooking: polished concrete countertops and reclaimed wood cabinet doors. At night, the bedroom locks up for privacy and safety, but the living room stays open for maximum connection with nature. You can practice yoga comfortably in so many spots and later bathe under the stars in the sunken tub. Made and Made will pamper you with healthy breakfasts of our homemade yogurt and fruit or black rice pudding. I'll leave you my list of my favorite secret spots and restaurants. I am also writing up my suggestions for must sees on 3 day stay, a five day stay and a 7 to 10 day stay.
Honeymoon couples love Passiflora, however I also love staying in the joglos by myself and it's also a wonderful experience as a family. We are situated at the end of the path and are protected by Kadek's family in the Balinese compound below. Our homes are the only two in Penestanan rice paddies which are connected to family temples.
Like Jazmin, this is a truly unique experience for FIT folks who want to be in touch with the Bali of rice farmers in the most natural but still luxurious way! Enjoy!
All my secret spots.. and sources from a ten year + + love affair with Bali. And my beautiful and kind and helpful staff: Sri, Made and Made.
Interaction with Guests
I love meeting our guests and am doubly happy when I see the variety of different kinds of people, who are happy and make our homes their homes. That is your gift to me. I try to come by the first morning.. but I am traveling and building for clients, so quite busy. I am always available via email and SMS as are Sri my right hand, wonderful assistant. And it is nice to know that you have privacy as well. And we have a very complete list of all things wonderful that are must dos.. and a local phone for use of our guests with our numbers in them. Very handy.
Penestanan has become hip... and now has its very own yoga studio, meditation center, approximately 10+ charming restaurants (Indonesian, Japanese, Indian, Raw/Organic, Vegetarian, Vegan) and a cafe and bakery, so you don't even have to get on your motorbike.
We can organize a scooter for you for $5 per day or
you can take an expensive taxi to Ubud $5 per ride.. or you can walk... 20 minutes.. to all things Ubud . You can also hire a car with a driver for about $50 US.
Other Things to Note
If you'd like a joglo of your own, let us know. :)

I recommend Neka and Arma Museum. Excellent Painting
Bottom of Monkey Forest Road. It is a trip to see all of those
critters that look so much like us. They are more aggressive than they
look and might end up sitting on your head like they did me :)
Eve spa is the local spa which is quite good and reasonable. It is near Alchemy.
The place where most of the junk handicrafts that go to
the world are made, but you can find good stuff in and amongst and
lots cheaper than in Ubud.
Jalan Hanuman and Monkey forest Road.
Some nice little boutiques in Ubud on Jalan Hanuman
Not necessarily the place for bargains but it is a spot
Seminyak at the beach.
Hip clothes shopping at the beach in Seminyak. 50 minutes
You can go to any of the hotels pools and pay usually 30.000
The one at Champuan has natural springs in one of them
and some very interesting and suggestive :) carvings. Gerebig also has a pool that can be used if you pay. Our latest and best discovery is the pool at The Mansion.
You can pay rp(phone number hidden) US.
The beaches in Bali can be disappointing. They are mainly not the white sand beaches we all dream of.
Everyone is different in terms of tastes in beaches. I like White Sand Beach in Padang Bay. It is one hour away. There is a lovely resort Bloo Lagoon if you'd like to stay but $180 per night.
Also another white sand beach just past Candi Dasar. You can go for the day (1:40 minutes one way) or spend the night at Pondok Pisang in Candi Dasar.
For years I didn’t like Ahmed, then I rediscovered it. The snorkeling has been so wonderful in the last year that it is an absolute pleasure! We stayed at a fantastic
Place called The Kampung.. a whole private compound.. a bit expensive, but worth it. I like Vienna Beach for snorkeling. Ahmed is a good 3 hours so you really must spend the night.
Many folks like the north of Bali. I don’t like the color of the sand there but I did once did go on a snorkeling trip to Menjangan Island. That is stunning.
I enjoy going to Uluwatu. It’s a jagged cliff with a beautiful view and some scary waves. You can go in a bit because there is a cove, but the tide can still get you. Many little warungs to have a beer at sunset.
Go to Uluwatu temple while you are there. Bingin beach is another surf spot nearby Uluwatu and easier to swim though still treacherous. There is a great house to rent on the cliff. Ask me for the name.
The Alila has opened a new five star hotel on the cliffs near Uluwatu. It is a
great place to enjoy an appetizer. Not cheap.
This is fun. Lots of stairs up and down, but not to strenuous once
your on the raft. Gorgeous way to spend a few hours get a bit wet and
see another Bali.
Stunning carvings down a spectacular rice terraced walk.
About 30 minutes from Ubud. There is a small sacred river and a small
waterfall with holy water. You could got to Talalalang on the way back and
stop for lunch at the lovely Kamoung Cafe.
If you are around during new moon (black moon) or full moon, do not miss the water purification ceremony at Tirta Empul. Best if you let Sri prepare offerings and go with you. She does quite a lot of work, so a nice tip will make her happy.
Restaurants I rather like....
Most of these are a nice walk away... but better in the evening than in the heat
of the day. Walk down and take "transport" back. They are tough negotiators.
Rp 12,000 is ideal for a ride back... but you may end up paying up to 20,000.

Fabulous home and spot in the midst of rice fields. Perfectly serene spot for us with a great view and pool. If you want to be close to the action, this is not the right spot for you as a walk to Ubud is 20-30 minutes away. We enjoyed nearby yoga at Intuitive Flow. Alejandra gave us tons of recommendations to enjoy her home and the rest of Bali.
I recently stayed at Alejandra's gorgeous house with my partner and young son. The place was beautifully decorated with such love and attention to detail. We felt truly welcome and blessed to stay in such a wonderful home. Every morning a lovely lady called Sri came to prepare the most delicious breakfast. I'm not usually a coffee drinker but the coffee was absolutely divine. Shortly thereafter the smiling duo Made and her friend Made appeared and cleaned and tidied up which was really lovely. The view is onto some rice paddies and some very exotic and beautiful plants ...a feast for the eyes. It was so nice to return to this peaceful haven after the hustle and bustle of the town. We really loved staying at this place and hope to return one day.
We stayed 5 nights in the beautiful natural villa and could not get enough of the green scenery, the peaceful sounds of nature and of Penestanan.
We would wake up to a tasteful breakfast made by lovely Sri, then walk around Penestanan and Ubud and eat in the cozy restaurants around.. an absolute perfect vacation away from the busy everyday we are so familiar with.
Alejandra is a wonderful host and made sure to answer all the questions in no time. We could not feel more welcome.
If you like nature, do not mind some uninvited four-legged guests here and there, and you are looking for a place to disconnect from the world and absorb what the green surroundings have to offer, this is the place for you. I am definitively recommending this place to everyone I know.
We had a great time at Alej's Villa. The house, location and atmosphere are fantastic. The house is really well thought out and walking out of the bedroom and looking at the rice fields and hearing all the sounds of frogs and life around was gorgeous. Great food nearby and with a motorbike handy I'd say the location is the perfect distance from town. Even though the house is almost completely open (fully close-able bedroom) the insects weren't a problem for us with mosquito coils alight. Possibly not for everyone.
I never met Alej or Sri in person but Made and Made were very sweet and we organised a babysitter (Wayan) through Sri who was very sweet with our kids.
We had our 5 year old and 5 month old with us . This worked well as the oldest is old enough to navigate the walk there (though there are some scary high falls so caution is essential) and she can swim and our baby was in a carrier. Definitely not great for toddlers though. So while this house is perfect for couples it can also work for certain families (if you are willing to share a bedroom).
Make sure you stay a few nights. We were there for 6 and didnt want to leave.
Very very beautiful house- big inspiration for anyone who cares about architecture, design or just anything beautiful.
Thank you so much, dear Alejandra! We had a wonderful stay in this extraordinary beautiful little house! The interior is very modern, stylish and tasteful. The housekeepers made sure to keep everything clean and made us a yummy, healthy breakfast every morning, which we enjoyed while overlooking the rice paddy. What a luxury! The nature around the house was stunning as well and well maintained. Far away from traffic, we could only hear frogs and geckos :-)
You've created a beautiful, romantic oasis in Ubud, we were really amazed. Also thanks for the helpful tipps on a printed sheet from you, the ones we've tried were great!
Fast wifi as well! The kitchen was fully equipped and in very good condition.
We can very highly recommend this little gem, it this truely the most beautiful and best place we've stayed for a long time! THANK YOU!
What a beauty..We will never forget the first emotion when we discovered the Joglo. We knew through the pictures that it will be really nice but still we were completely amazed at the first sight. Wonderful staff and deliiiicious breakfast. When we booked the villa it wasn't any swimming pool in the description but between that time and our arrival a magical surprise was waiting for us, they built one :)!
Thank you for everything, unforgettable memory..

I am a world wanderer and have lived and designed in many countries. But so far Indonesia, specifically Bali is my favorite.. (12 years and counting). Two years ago my beloved Jaime, who is a psycholgist from Vermont and a passionate meditator, joined me, so now my paradise is much sweeter.
My passion is making spaces a delight for the senses: visually poetic, dream-friendly, a few nice spots for kissing, a simple table for the sharing of food, a comfortable spot for intriguing conversation, a moon viewing corner.
In the last years I've been having a love affair with old 120 year old teak structures from Java called joglos and limasans. I go to Java myself and select the structures in the villages. Then we bring them back and start working on a design that works within the limitations of these extraordinary structures.
If you have a love attack and would like a joglo of your own in Bali... let me know...
we can show you what we are working on...
