Nestled in a preserved rice paddy, our NY Times featured transformed joglo, 100-year-old teak structure, is carefully designed to be in touch with nature. Penestanan is the hip area of town: yoga, cafes, rice-paddy walks and 20 minutes on foot to Ubud. We are off the beaten path and hard to find as there is no direct car access. We STRONGLY advise using our select drivers who know our location and will carry your bags the 5-minute walk (with steps) to Passiflora. Other drivers won't carry bags.

The space

Walk 6 minutes or ride a rented motorbike along a tropical river path (and then up 30 steps) to one of three architect-designed loft-like antique joglo (traditional Javanese teak house). Passiflora is set in a rice paddy, which we have kept, partially intact, as part of our commitment to this agricultural tradition. Across the rice paddy is our other joglo, Jazmin, https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/385959. Marguerite, our newest https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/866341 is across the walking path. Being mindful of water shortages in Ubud, we decided to add a shared salt water pool for the use of our guests from the three houses. Often you will have it to yourself. Our neighborhood has no car noise, but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and collared kingfisher birds, while still walking distance from Ubud (20 minutes).
Passiflora is a reclaimed antique joglo brought over timber by timber from Java. Each of our joglos has its own personality. We carefully design every detail to make sure that staying in these transformed traditional structures is a one of a kind experience in luxurious but simple ecological living.
As you walk into Passiflora, you'll be taken by the spacious loft -like feeling (1000 sq. ft. /90 meters square) with the added visual pleasure of antique teak timber beams and carved wood panels. The roof is made of handwoven grass known as "alang-alang" here.
We have combined traditional elements, but the sensibility is modern with an emphasis on comfort. There are no villas in Ubud quite as uniquely in touch with nature as Passiflora and Jazmin.
Read on the daybed on the verandah, have a conversation in the living room then have a nap in the bedroom on the king-sized super comfortable bed overlooking the family temple. The kitchen is perfect for cooking: polished concrete countertops and reclaimed wood cabinet doors. At night, the bedroom locks up for privacy and safety, but the living room stays open for maximum connection with nature. You can practice yoga comfortably in so many spots and later bathe under the stars in the sunken tub. Made and Made will pamper you with healthy breakfasts of Bali Buda bread, Bali Coffee and our homemade yogurt and jam. No breakfast would be complete without a plate of tropical fruit. I'll leave you my list of my favorite secret spots and restaurants.
Honeymoon couples love the joglos, however I also love staying in the joglos by myself. Our houses are the only two in Penestanan which are connected to traditional Balinese family temples.
Like Jazmin, this is a truly unique experience for FIT folks who want to be in touch with the Bali of rice farmers in the most natural but still luxurious way! Enjoy!

We have a very complete list of all things wonderful that are must dos.. and a local phone for use of our guests with our numbers in them. Very handy.
Penestanan has become hip... and now has its very own yoga studio, meditation center, approximately 10+ charming restaurants (Indonesian, Japanese, Indian, Raw/Organic, Vegetarian, Vegan) and a cafe and bakery, so you don't even have to get on your motorbike.
We can organize a scooter for you for $5 per day or
you can take an expensive taxi to Ubud $5 per ride.. or you can walk... 20 minutes.. to all things Ubud . You can also hire a car with a driver for about $50 US.
We have been featured in the New York Times, Building in Harmony and recently, Lost Bali, a new guidebook that has chosen Passiflora as the ONLY CHOICE for where to stay in Ubud! A book about our work will be released in December 2017.
If you'd like a joglo of your own, let Studio Magnolia know. :)

Guest access

Our recommended drivers will be delighted to pick you up at the airport. We recommend this option because they know where we live and are willing to carry bags. Other drivers are not. Our homemade laminated map is a great help for navigating your local adventures.

We had such a wonderful stay here at Sri's vila. It was everything described and more. The vila is completely secluded in the middle of beautiful rice fields, and completely comfortable with all you need. The location is away from the hustle and bustle of the streets but an easy walk to nearby shops and eateries. We had two massages in the villa by Jampi - highly recommend him. Made and Made make breakfast in the vila and serve amazing food - they are incredibly kind and thoughtful people. Sri has everything organized so well, and nothing is too much. A phone with Simcard is provided for you to contact Sri at anytime to ask any questions or to ask her to arrange massages :) Would highly recommend this vila and we will be visiting again.

Sri is great host. The home isn't lovely clean and a true Bali experience. It's open air kitchen, living room and bathroom so make sure your up for that. There is a net over the bed which makes for a restful night sleep with no bugs. Breakfast was delicious and the staff are lovely. Sri is helpful to organize a driver for day trips as well. Overall great stay, thanks!

We loved staying at Passiflora. The Joglo's location is nicely tucked away amongst lush greenery and little rice paddie fields. The perfect setting for an orchestra of frogs in the evening and a lovingly prepared breakfast in the open plan covered area, overlooking the garden. Never thought we'ld have black rice pudding for breakfast amongst other tasty options. So glad we did!! Thanks to the wonderful service staff and host we enjoyed our stay thoroughly.

Really unique location outside of downtown Ubud. Downtown can get chaotic so it was really lovely to stay in this quiet village. Made, Made, and Eva did a great job cleaning and made a wonderful breakfast. Hope to be back again soon.

Beautiful house away from the busy Ubud central. Beautiful area and great scenery. Breakfast and all the care from the staff was great. Would recommend renting a scooter if going to central Ubud frequently. It's not a difficult walk there but can get very tiring if doing more than one round trip a day in the heat.

We stayed here for 3 nights but I could have stayed a month! A beautiful peaceful location surrounded by rice field but still a very walkable distance into the centre of Ubud! We loved the outdoor living space and lounging around in the day bed! Made and Sri took great care of us and breakfasts were amazing with such a great view! The bed is also really comfy! Hopefully we can come back one day and stay longer! Would absolutely recommend to stay here!
