Lovingly Designed to Be in touch with Nature. We were featured in the New York Times: Building in Harmony in Bali. And now, Airbnb has selected us as one of their 12 properties in the world for our high standards. Let us pamper you in the Paddies.

The Space

Walk 6 minutes or ride a rented motorbike along a tropical river path (and then up 30 steps) to our second architect designed loft-like antique joglo (traditional javanese teak house). Passiflora is set in the rice paddies of Penestanan, one rice paddy away from our other home, Jazmin, Our village has no car access or car sounds but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and collared kingfisher birds, and it is still walking distance away from Ubud (20 minutes). See my Profile Page for other listings we have.

Jazmin, like Passiflora is a reclaimed antique joglo brought in timber by timber from Java. Though similar, each of the joglos has its own personality and I have taken care to design every detail to make sure it is the ultimate in a unique indoor /outdoor living experience ( I am an architectural designer). Staying in these old transformed houses is a one of a kind experience in luxurious simple ecological living (read some of the reviews).

As you walk into Passiflora, you'll be taken by the the super spacious loft -like feel (1000 sq. ft. /90 meters square) with the added pleasure of a antique teak timber roof above your head (25 ft./ 8 meters) and all reclaimed wood panels, carvings and doors! We have re used every board.
The roof is made of handwoven grass. But the sensibility is modern with an emphasis on comfort. There is no villa quite as uniquely in touch with nature as Passiflora and Jazmin in Penestanan.

Read on the daybed on the verandah, have a conversation in the living room then have a nap in the bedroom on the king-sized super comfortable bed overlooking the family temple. The kitchen is perfect for cooking: polished concrete countertops and reclaimed wood cabinet doors. At night, the bedroom locks up for privacy and safety, but the living room stays open for maximum connection with nature. You can practice yoga comfortably in so many spots and later bathe under the stars in the sunken tub. Made and Made will pamper you with healthy breakfasts of our homemade yogurt and fruit or black rice pudding. I'll leave you my list of my favorite secret spots and restaurants. I am also writing up my suggestions for must sees on 3 day stay, a five day stay and a 7 to 10 day stay.

Honeymoon couples love Passiflora, however I also love staying in the joglos by myself and it's also a wonderful experience as a family. We are situated at the end of the path and are protected by Kadek's family in the Balinese compound below. Our homes are the only two in Penestanan rice paddies which are connected to family temples.

Like Jazmin, this is a truly unique experience for FIT folks who want to be in touch with the Bali of rice farmers in the most natural but still luxurious way! Enjoy!

All my secret spots.. and sources and ten years of a love affair with Bali. And my beautiful and kind and helpful staff: Sri, Made and Made.

Interaction with Guests

I love to meeting our guests and am so happy when I see a variety of different kinds of people, who are happy and make our homes their homes. That is your gift to me. I try to come by the first morning.. but I am traveling and building for clients, so quite busy. I am always available via email and SMS as are Sri my right hand, wonderful assistant. Very handy.

Penestanan has become hip... and now has its very own yoga studio, meditation center, approximately 10+ charming restaurants (Indonesian, Japanese, Indian, Raw/Organic, Vegetarian, Vegan) and a cafe and bakery, so you don't even have to get on your motorbike.

  • Amazingly interesting place in quite area of Ubud. Ambiance of the villa is quite special and surrounding rice field is lovely. Her guide book in the house is very helpful and quite interesting suggestion! She came by to say hi and chat with me, and we rested in shed in the living room together and had a very interesting conversation! Thanks a lot, Alejandra to host me :) hope to see you again in Bali!

  • It feels like pure luxury staying here. The house is beautiful and everyone is super helpful. Made and Made make the perfect breakfast every morning and we also used the contacts of Sri and Alej for a massage in the house, a good driver for a day tour and the tips for restaurants. It is quite a walk to the centre of Ubud when it's warm, but it's cheap to rent a scooter.

  • Lovely house, amazing breakfast, good book collection. Two shocks: 1. location - walking access only (we didn't mind this after finding out we were just 3 min from yellow cafe and 5 min from street) and 2. No AC - so ended up sleeping on kitchen floor; luckily not many mosquitoes at this time of year. Bed room stifling hot.

Lovely host, lovely house, lovely setup, just very basic and also remote. Not having a pool was no problem as I took cold baths in the huge natural bathroom, very nice. Incense from next door family temple made me sneeze a lot :) Would recommend to hippies and people wanting a nature/organic getaway. Definitely not families as not kid friendly/water and ponds everywhere and no AC.

  • The villa was wonderfully comfortable. Loved the outdoor bathroom. We felt very at home and sad to leave. We were very happy about the Yellow Flower Cafe within walking distance. The neighborhood is low key and quiet, unless the farmers are tilling their rice beds, and then your privacy and quietness will be disturbed. I would definitely stay here again if it were available.

  • My partner and I thoroughly loved our stay at Alejandra's beautifully appointed villa. Alejandra has a great eye for design and we were happy to meet her on one of our mornings. The location is peaceful and secluded, yet the excellent Yellow Flower cafe is just a few rice paddies away (I can recommend their Balinese buffet dinner on Sunday nights) . Ubud itself is only about 20 minutes away on foot (there is a climb of about 100 steps back up to the ridge, but it's not too arduous). Alejandra's villa was very comfortable and clean, and we loved the breakfasts that were prepared for us each morning. We would not hesitate in recommending Passiflora.

  • What an amazing villa! On arrival the driver stopped the car and walked us along the paths through the paddy fields to arrive at this stunning accommodation hidden in the fields. The villa itself is immaculately presented with lovely touches to the decor and structure creating an incredibly relaxing atmosphere. We could just sit and watch the view all day. Most of the villa is open to the elements so expect local critters to visit throughout the day and night and share your space. The villa is close to local cafes and just a fifteen minute walk to the centre of Ubud. This is the perfect location to enjoy the serenity of Ubud and the surrounding nature - highly recommended!

  • My adventure to Ubud, in Bali, included a journey to Alejandra's magical dwelling that captures your heart the minute you arrive.
Nicely set away from the hectic traffic of the village of Penenstanan, a walk up a winding road , crossing over a fern laden bridge looking down into a swirling river ,a short walk and a few steps, happy you have help with your luggage,
you reach the top ,,and ,,,hmmmmm,,,,,you've entered into a whole new world !

Filled with awe , I gasped at the surrounding beauty, the openness ,and the lovely charm of the entire scene and house before me .

Having an eye for detail , I could not find anything lacking in taste nor comfort.

Pleasing to all my senses, I quickly ran the bath, and jumped in the marvelous tub in the open bath room that I fell in love with the moment I stepped in,,,,,heavenly,,,
and what a joy to relax in cool water on a hot day, looking at beautiful stones , flowers and all of the greenery surrounding you.

With fresh coconuts delivered in the morning, and also two extremely sweet beautiful ladies arriving to make breakfast of your choice,
and also my favorite two red headed roosters ,who came everyday
(as I spoiled them with toast ),,,,and of course now I want two of my own because I fell in love with them,,,,,,well,,,
I was in story book heaven!!

Dragonflies, little frogs and a neighbors dog and kitty, the Heidi of the alm awoke and I felt right at home, of course if you don't want them visiting you can shoo them all away ,,,but I enjoyed all the little creatures that showed up to the max!

A beautiful, picture perfect short walk on a stone laden path thru rice fields and flowers, interesting old walls entwined with huge plants and ferns will lead you to the fabulous yellow flower cafe ,,,try the papaya drink ,,,wow!!!!

You'll pass a building with a yoga class, and then a few other beautiful resturants right there around the bend (email hidden),all very interesting ,,,including the people you will see here and there.. really all quite lovely and entertaining I thought.

Bring a flashlight for the evening , I walked all around at night ,,,and came back late ,,on my own ,,you will feel safe ,,and there's a patrol guy who takes care of the entire area too,,, I found that comforting.

But , back to the house ,which is just adorable in every way,,,just loved the side fish ponds , the old wood , the stone in the floors , the windows that open to the bedroom,,,,,,,I really could go on and on!

I sure hope you enjoy your adventure to this magical place as much as I did, and hopefully, also have the pleasure of meeting it's very creative owner!!!

    En joy!!!!!!

  • To try and encapsulate the magic of this jogolo, the enchantment of Ubud and the hospitality of made, made, Sri and Alej is a silly feat that is impossible. That said if you are thinking about coming to Ubud you would doing both yourself and whomever your traveling with a SERIOUS dispersive by not staying in jasmine or pasiflora, my 3 days is Ubud changed my life. The house is impeccable and perfectly built. The sunken bathtub is revolutionary. The kitchen is perfect, the living area and bedroom are unparalleled. My heart was left in your home Alej. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  • Our one-month stay at Passiflora was exquisite. This home is as beautiful - if not more - than the photos above. Situated 2 steps from the rice field, it is in the heart of a tranquil & beautiful community. We could wax poetic about this spot, but it may be more effective to list out all the amazing features of this home:

    1. Living room is completely open to the rice paddy, which has stunning morning light (I've never seen pinks and reds this vibrant at sunrise). If you are up for lounging around and just sitting on the couch to read, you will have a beautiful view with gentle breezes coming in from each direction.

    2. Bathroom is perfect. The open air shower was a dream, and the bathtub so very relaxing. The tiles around the sink were beautifully created and lovingly arranged. I loved them so much, I used them as inspiration for one of my batik silks I made while staying in Ubud. We took tons & tons of photos of the entire bathroom with hopes we can recreate this space in our next home.

    3. Lighting. After we left Passiflora, we rented another home in Penestanan (because Passiflora was booked - boo!!!!!) and couldn't stop commenting how much we missed the lighting in Passiflora. Alejandra did a brilliant job with lighting the joglo, including overhead lights and standing fixtures. At the end of the night, we would return from dinner and light the place so romantically for our final cup of tea before dozing off to sleep.

    4. Location is key. Downtown Ubud is a 7 minute drive by motor bike. We were grateful to be out of the hustle & bustle of town with its scooter noise and congestion. Escaping to quiet Penestanan each night was a treat. We fell asleep to a beautiful frog symphony each night and awoke to the nearby chickens alerting us the day had dawned. It was perfect being so close to the sounds of nature and waking up in this magical place.

We would have absolutly zero hesitation renting this beautiful home again. We have falled in love with Ubud and are trying to figure out a way to stay even longer next time, and with any luck, we'll be staying in Passiflora again.

  • My husband and I and our 2 years old son spent a week in Passiflora. The villa is completely uniq and well-appointed. The surroundings are incredibly beautiful. Made and Made make a delicious breakfast. I can only highly recommend the place and we will certainly return. :-) Thank you Alejandra - Martin & Lea

I am an architectural designer and world wanderer. I've lived and designed in lots of countries, but so far Bali is my favorite and I keep staying... 10 years and counting. My passion is making spaces a delight for the senses: visually poetic, dream-friendly, a few nice spots for kissing, a simple table for the sharing of food, a comfortable spot for intriguing conversation, a moon viewing corner. In the last years I've been having a love affair with old 120 year old teak structures from Java called joglos and limasans. I go to Java myself and select the structures in the villages. Then we bring them back and start working on a design that works within the limitations of these extraordinary structures. If you have a love attack and would like a joglo of your own in Bali... let me know... we can show you what we are working on... I'm Argentine-American. Hablemos en español, français, italiano.
