Architect Designed Natural Villa 1

House - Entire home/apt · Jalan Penestenan, Ubud, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Lovingly Designed to Be in touch with Nature. We were featured in the New York Times: Building in Harmony in Bali. And now, Airbnb has selected us as one of their 12 properties in the world for our high standards. Let us pamper you in the Paddies.

The Space

Walk 6 minutes or ride a rented motorbike along a tropical river path (and then up 30 steps) to our second architect designed loft-like antique joglo (traditional javanese teak house). Passiflora is set in the rice paddies of Penestanan, one rice paddy away from our other home, Jazmin, https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/385959. Our village has no car access or car sounds but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and collared kingfisher birds, and it is still walking distance away from Ubud (20 minutes).

Jazmin, like Passiflora is a reclaimed antique joglo brought in timber by timber from Java. Though similar, each of the joglos has its own personality and I have taken care to design every detail to make sure it is the ultimate in a unique indoor /outdoor living experience ( I am an architectural designer). Staying in these old transformed houses is a one of a kind experience in luxurious simple ecological living (read some of the reviews).

As you walk into Passiflora, you'll be taken by the the super spacious loft -like feel (1000 sq. ft. /90 meters square) with the added pleasure of a antique teak timber roof above your head (25 ft./ 8 meters) and all reclaimed wood panels, carvings and doors! We have re used every board.
The roof is made of handwoven grass. But the sensibility is modern with an emphasis on comfort. There is no villa quite as uniquely in touch with nature as Passiflora and Jazmin in Penestanan.

Read on the daybed on the verandah, have a conversation in the living room then have a nap in the bedroom on the king-sized super comfortable bed overlooking the family temple. The kitchen is perfect for cooking: polished concrete countertops and reclaimed wood cabinet doors. At night, the bedroom locks up for privacy and safety, but the living room stays open for maximum connection with nature. You can practice yoga comfortably in so many spots and later bathe under the stars in the sunken tub. Made and Made will pamper you with healthy breakfasts of our homemade yogurt and fruit or black rice pudding. I'll leave you my list of my favorite secret spots and restaurants. I am also writing up my suggestions for must sees on 3 day stay, a five day stay and a 7 to 10 day stay.

Honeymoon couples love Passiflora, however I also love staying in the joglos by myself and it's also a wonderful experience as a family. We are situated at the end of the path and are protected by Kadek's family in the Balinese compound below. Our homes are the only two in Penestanan rice paddies which are connected to family temples.

Like Jazmin, this is a truly unique experience for FIT folks who want to be in touch with the Bali of rice farmers in the most natural but still luxurious way! Enjoy!

  • My adventure to Ubud, in Bali, included a journey to Alejandra's magical dwelling that captures your heart the minute you arrive.
Nicely set away from the hectic traffic of the village of Penenstanan, a walk up a winding road , crossing over a fern laden bridge looking down into a swirling river ,a short walk and a few steps, happy you have help with your luggage,
you reach the top ,,and ,,,hmmmmm,,,,,you've entered into a whole new world !

Filled with awe , I gasped at the surrounding beauty, the openness ,and the lovely charm of the entire scene and house before me .

Having an eye for detail , I could not find anything lacking in taste nor comfort.

Pleasing to all my senses, I quickly ran the bath, and jumped in the marvelous tub in the open bath room that I fell in love with the moment I stepped in,,,,,heavenly,,,
and what a joy to relax in cool water on a hot day, looking at beautiful stones , flowers and all of the greenery surrounding you.

With fresh coconuts delivered in the morning, and also two extremely sweet beautiful ladies arriving to make breakfast of your choice,
and also my favorite two red headed roosters ,who came everyday
(as I spoiled them with toast ),,,,and of course now I want two of my own because I fell in love with them,,,,,,well,,,
I was in story book heaven!!

Dragonflies, little frogs and a neighbors dog and kitty, the Heidi of the alm awoke and I felt right at home, of course if you don't want them visiting you can shoo them all away ,,,but I enjoyed all the little creatures that showed up to the max!

A beautiful, picture perfect short walk on a stone laden path thru rice fields and flowers, interesting old walls entwined with huge plants and ferns will lead you to the fabulous yellow flower cafe ,,,try the papaya drink ,,,wow!!!!

You'll pass a building with a yoga class, and then a few other beautiful resturants right there around the bend and a massage gal,all very interesting ,,,including the people you will see here and there.. really all quite lovely and entertaining I thought.

Bring a flashlight for the evening , I walked all around at night ,,,and came back late ,,on my own ,,you will feel safe ,,and there's a patrol guy who takes care of the entire area too,,, I found that comforting.

But , back to the house ,which is just adorable in every way,,,just loved the side fish ponds , the old wood , the stone in the floors , the windows that open to the bedroom,,,,,,,I really could go on and on!

I sure hope you enjoy your adventure to this magical place as much as I did, and hopefully, also have the pleasure of meeting it's very creative owner!!!

    En joy!!!!!!

  • To try and encapsulate the magic of this jogolo, the enchantment of Ubud and the hospitality of made, made, Sri and Alej is a silly feat that is impossible. That said if you are thinking about coming to Ubud you would doing both yourself and whomever your traveling with a SERIOUS dispersive by not staying in jasmine or pasiflora, my 3 days is Ubud changed my life. The house is impeccable and perfectly built. The sunken bathtub is revolutionary. The kitchen is perfect, the living area and bedroom are unparalleled. My heart was left in your home Alej. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    Response from Alejandra:

You are both so special and advanced for your young years to come all this way and explore Bali with the openness that you have. I really look forward to hearing about your lives and of course, can't wait for your next Bali adventure! Thank you for this amazing review.

  • Our one-month stay at Passiflora was exquisite. This home is as beautiful - if not more - than the photos above. Situated 2 steps from the rice field, it is in the heart of a tranquil & beautiful community. We could wax poetic about this spot, but it may be more effective to list out all the amazing features of this home:

    1. Living room is completely open to the rice paddy, which has stunning morning light (I've never seen pinks and reds this vibrant at sunrise). If you are up for lounging around and just sitting on the couch to read, you will have a beautiful view with gentle breezes coming in from each direction.

    2. Bathroom is perfect. The open air shower was a dream, and the bathtub so very relaxing. The tiles around the sink were beautifully created and lovingly arranged. I loved them so much, I used them as inspiration for one of my batik silks I made while staying in Ubud. We took tons & tons of photos of the entire bathroom with hopes we can recreate this space in our next home.

    3. Lighting. After we left Passiflora, we rented another home in Penestanan (because Passiflora was booked - boo!!!!!) and couldn't stop commenting how much we missed the lighting in Passiflora. Alejandra did a brilliant job with lighting the joglo, including overhead lights and standing fixtures. At the end of the night, we would return from dinner and light the place so romantically for our final cup of tea before dozing off to sleep.

    4. Location is key. Downtown Ubud is a 7 minute drive by motor bike. We were grateful to be out of the hustle & bustle of town with its scooter noise and congestion. Escaping to quiet Penestanan each night was a treat. We fell asleep to a beautiful frog symphony each night and awoke to the nearby chickens alerting us the day had dawned. It was perfect being so close to the sounds of nature and waking up in this magical place.

We would have absolutly zero hesitation renting this beautiful home again. We have falled in love with Ubud and are trying to figure out a way to stay even longer next time, and with any luck, we'll be staying in Passiflora again.

  • My husband and I and our 2 years old son spent a week in Passiflora. The villa is completely uniq and well-appointed. The surroundings are incredibly beautiful. Made and Made make a delicious breakfast. I can only highly recommend the place and we will certainly return. :-) Thank you Alejandra - Martin & Lea

  • Alej's place was lovely, a surprise retreat from Bali's noisy beaches. We enjoyed getting lost in the padi fields, randomly peeping into the joglos we walked by. The open shower was fantastic - strong, hot water and breakfast was prepared on time by Made and Made. Thank you for the opportunity to experience another side of Bali !!!

Thank you so much for coming to stay... Alej

  • Absolutely wonderful villa amid rice paddy fields with very nice architectural details. A close walk to town, yet remote enough from the bustle and hustle of ‘downtown’ Ubud. The host, Alejandra, is delightful and the staff is superb. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and can truly recommend this place to anyone.

  • Alejandra's villa is pretty amazing and has everything you could possibly need. It's in a great location - really quiet in an area with only walking footpaths yet an easy walk into Ubud if you like. Made's breakfasts were also a highlight. I would definitely recommend this place.

    Thank you, Tami. Alejandra

  • Such a gorgeous house in a tranquil location. Just being here is a destination in itself. No traffic noise whatsoever - just ducks and the odd rice farmer wandering past.
The bedroom is airy and romantic and the outdoor bathtub is incredible. The whole place is like a page out of a design magazine. A truly special place.

  • Alejandra's place was wonderful and right in the rice paddies giving you an authentic Bali feel. Sri, Made and Made were great help and Alej was lovely and a gracious host. It is worth noting that you cannot take a taxi or vehicle to the villa door and getting there involves walking through some cute rice padies and nooks. We love walking and staying at the villa almost makes you feel like a local in your neighbourhood. We went to the Intuitive Flow yoga place nearby and the Yellow Flower cafe - both are excellent. We would advise avoiding Ubud down town altogether, the traffic and tourists are hectic. There are so many wonderful places in Penestanan and Kedewatan (in the opposite direction to Ubud on the way to Mozaic) and the pace is what Ubud used to be like. We definitely recommend dining at Mozaic (pricey but worth it) and the Elephant which is excellent. All of Alej's suggestions are good too. Anyway we hope to get back to Penestanan in the very near future! Thanks for hosting us Alej! xx

    Response from Alejandra:

Thank you so much for taking the time to write! We hope to have you back soon.. Alej

  • It has taken us a few days to completely digest and be able to put into words our experience at Alej's villa. From the moment we arrived, to the minute we said goodbye everything was simply OUTSTANDING! The villa is beautiful, Alejandra and her staff are amazing and so very kind, and the surroundings give the PICTURE PERFECT introduction to Bali, its culture, and its people.

We instantly felt at home with our surroundings, and wandering the beautiful scenery-- discovering something new each and every day!
Alej has left a very useful and candid guide that she has put together herself that shares many secrets (restaurants, spa's, etc.) in the area. If you can't find what you are looking for, Sri will make it happen! The driver and his team (recommended by Alej) are wonderful! They are dependable, safe, and we strongly recommend you hire them for a day or two to explore the island and its endless beautiful sights.

A beautiful feature of Alej's house is the location. You are surrounded by beauty and nature... yet away from the hectic pace of central Ubud. Many hip and popular cafe's and restaurants are just a minute or two away on foot! Central Ubud is no more than a 15-20 minute walk, and a huge Bintang supermarket offering local and western favorites is less than a 10 minute walk away. It is an IDEAL location, and an IDEAL setting for a peaceful and relaxing holiday!

The villa is immaculately maintained by Sri and her team (Made and Made,) and equipped with all the comforts you need... wifi, bottled water, hot shower, fully equipped kitchen, etc. Alej's taste in decor has left a true designer mark on this villa! The place comes alive at night when you turn on the beautiful lighting both inside and out.

Our favorite memory of our 10 day stay was our true connection with the village. They make you feel so very welcome, and are truly dedicated to making your stay a memorable one. From the touching offerings that are placed outside your entrance every day, to the amazing neighbor Kadek who will come by to say hello and welcome you, or our friend who came by every morning with fresh coconut and duck eggs, and even the rice field workers passing by who will smile at you and say hello. Or the amazing Whisky and Brindie (Kadek's dogs) who "patrol" the fields making sure all is safe!

It was so hard to say goodbye at the end of our stay! We truly had made some amazing new friends and been left such a beautiful impression. We will be forever grateful to Sri, Made, and Made who took such amazing care of us during our stay! We still think about all of the amazing breakfasts, dinners (deliciously prepared by Sri,) and that home-made pineapple jam made with love by Made!
We cannot wait to come back! A truly unforgettable experience!

Thank you! Gracias! Terima Kasih! :-)

About
I am an architectural designer and world wanderer. I've lived and designed in lots of countries, but so far Bali is my favorite and I keep staying... 10 years and counting. My passion is making spaces a delight for the senses: visually poetic, dream-friendly, a few nice spots for kissing, a simple table for the sharing of food, a comfortable spot for intriguing conversation, a moon viewing corner. In the last years I've been having a love affair with old 120 year old teak structures from Java called joglos and limasans. I go to Java myself and select the structures in the villages. Then we bring them back and start working on a design that works within the limitations of these extraordinary structures. If you have a love attack and would like a joglo of your own in Bali... let me know... we can show you what we are working on... I'm Argentine-American. Hablemos en español, français, italiano.
