About this listing
Nestled in some of the last preserved rice paddies of Penestanan, our transformed joglos (100 year old teak structures) are lovingly designed to be in touch with nature.
Walk 6 minutes or ride a rented motorbike along a tropical river path (and then up 30 steps) to our first architect-designed loft-like antique joglo (traditional Javanese teak house). Passiflora is set in a rice paddy, which we have kept, partially intact, as part of our commitment to this agricultural tradition. Across the rice paddy is our other joglo, Jazmin, https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/385959. Marguerite, our freshly remodeled house https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/866341 is across the walking path. We have also recently added a shared salt water pool for the use of our guests!
Our area has no car access nor motorbike noise, but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and collared kingfisher birds, while still walking distance from Ubud (25 minutes).
Passiflora is a reclaimed antique joglo brought over timber by timber from Java. Each of my joglos has its own personality. I carefully design every detail to make sure that staying in these transformed traditional structures is a one of a kind experience in luxurious but simple ecological living.
As you walk into Passiflora, you'll be taken by the spacious loft -like feeling (1000 sq. ft. /90 meters square) with the added visual pleasure of antique teak timber beams and carved wood panels. The roof is made of handwoven grass known as "alang-alang" here.
I have combined traditional elements, but the sensibility is modern with an emphasis on comfort. There are no villas in Ubud quite as uniquely in touch with nature as Passiflora and Jazmin.
Read on the daybed on the verandah, have a conversation in the living room then have a nap in the bedroom on the king-sized super comfortable bed overlooking the family temple. The kitchen is perfect for cooking: polished concrete countertops and reclaimed wood cabinet doors. At night, the bedroom locks up for privacy and safety, but the living room stays open for maximum connection with nature. You can practice yoga comfortably in so many spots and later bathe under the stars in the sunken tub. Made, Made and Kadek will pamper you with healthy breakfasts of Bali Buda bread, Bali Coffee and our homemade yogurt and jam. No breakfast would be complete without a plate of tropical fruit. I'll leave you my list of my favorite secret spots and restaurants.
Honeymoon couples love Passiflora, however I also love staying in the joglos by myself. Our houses are the only two in Penestanan which are connected to traditional Balinese family temples.
Like Jazmin, this is a truly unique experience for FIT folks who want to be in touch with the Bali of rice farmers in the most natural but still luxurious way! Enjoy!
All my secret spots.. and sources from a ten year + + love affair with Bali. And my beautiful and kind and helpful staff: Sri, Made and Made.
I love meeting our guests and am doubly happy when I see the variety of different kinds of people, who are happy and make our homes their homes. That is your gift to me. I try to come by the first morning.. but I am traveling and building for clients, so quite busy. I am always available via email and SMS as are Sri my right hand, wonderful assistant. And it is nice to know that you have privacy as well. And we have a very complete list of all things wonderful that are must dos.. and a local phone for use of our guests with our numbers in them. Very handy.
Penestanan has become hip... and now has its very own yoga studio, meditation center, approximately 10+ charming restaurants (Indonesian, Japanese, Indian, Raw/Organic, Vegetarian, Vegan) and a cafe and bakery, so you don't even have to get on your motorbike.
We can organize a scooter for you for $5 per day or
you can take an expensive taxi to Ubud $5 per ride.. or you can walk... 20 minutes.. to all things Ubud . You can also hire a car with a driver for about $50 US.
If you'd like a joglo of your own, let us know. :)
We leave you a list of our most updated favorite suggestions for delicious meals, secret special spots to visit and walks. We have our favorite spa to recommend and our own masseur who comes to the house. We provide a local phone with preprogrammed numbers and a little credit. Our homemade laminated map is a great help for navigating your local adventures.
Interaction with Guests
Sri will generally greet you unless you arrive in the evening. The next morning one of us will stop by to say hello and offer suggestions for making your stay memorable. You can always contact us via SMS or email.
Penestanan is the now the hip section of town. Interesting little restaurants have opened up: Yellow Flower (3 minute walk), Alchemy, Element, Wayan's Juice, Made's Warung. We have a wonderful yoga studio: (3 minutes walking) Intuitive Flow. Cantika Zest, an outdoor spa set in a jungle like setting, is a 15 minutes walk. Because Ubud center is crowded now, it's wonderful to escape to our village and still be a twenty five minute leisurely walk away.
You may rent a motor scooter for 5 dollars per day. Taxis to Ubud are expensive (5 dollars per ride). Walking is a wonderful healthy alternative. If you would like to hire a car with a driver for the day, the cost is about $50US.
We have found that most guests who stay with us are extremely appreciative and respectful of our houses.
First experience with airbnb, I would say it is the best place to stay in Ubud! Penestanan area is nice and quiet surrounding with rice fields and not far from Ubud! Love the design of the house. It feels so relay and like home for me. Yellow flowers restaurant is about 200 meters away. I will definitely come back again!
Our stay at the villa was superb! Located just outside Ubud (but still within walking distance) amongst rural life and rice paddies you have the best of both worlds - rural tranquility and the buzz of Ubud. The villa is quiet and beautifully designed, set far enough away from the few neighbours so you have privacy. There are plenty of quality local restaurants nearby if you want a quick lunch or dinner.
Alejandro was a super host! Gave us great information on what to see and where to eat..... All recommendations we tried were fantastic and as described. It was great to have a host close by but one that really gave you space. Thank you!
To sum up we had a great few first days thanks to Alejandro and the Villa.... I would recommend anyone to stay!
Our stay at Passiflora was absolutely stunning and fantastic. This wonderful home is snugly settled in the middle of the enchanting rice fields of ubud, close enough to the village for easy exploration for far enough away to drift to sleep among the relaxing sounds of frogs and doves and gurgling water. Alejandra and her staff made us feel very at home and comfortable and hope that we can come back for another visit very soon!
Pictures don't do justice for this gorgeous home in the middle of rice fields. We had such a rejuvanating few days -- an absolutely wonderful way to begin our honeymoon. From the moment we stepped off the plane, a driver was there to pick us up and take us to Ubud. From there, Sri met us with a huge smile, helped us with our luggage and helped settle us in. We had delicious breakfasts every morning, a great chat with both Alejandra and Jim -- and Sri helped us book some drivers to see the local sights. It was a wonderful stay and we'll happily come back soon!!
Amazing house in a wonderful neighbourhood away from the hustle and bustle. It is a short walk to the main street leading into central Ubud, but the walk is through the rice fields and is absolutely magical. The house is beautifully designed, with an outdoor shower and bath and feels really open to the surrounding greenery.
Alejandra is a friendly and helpful host and together with the house manager Sri they organised our transport, day trips and even took us along to a local wedding! There is a great breakfast included and the housekeepers come every day. I would definitely recommend staying here to anyone travelling to Ubud!
We loved staying here! An absolute pleasure being tucked away in the rice fields, away from the traffic and noise of an increasingly busy Ubud. The house is so thoughtfully decorated with gorgeous art in every nook and cranny. Great selection of books, too! Alej gave us some great restaurant tips and a huge thanks to Sri - especially for getting the medicine I left behind driven down to us at Bingin Beach. Literally life saving. Totally recommended.

About the Host, Alejandra
I am a world wanderer and have lived and designed in many countries. But so far Indonesia, specifically Bali is my favorite.. (12 years and counting). Two years ago my beloved Jaime, who is a psycholgist from Vermont and a passionate meditator, joined me, so now my paradise is much sweeter.
My passion is making spaces a delight for the senses: visually poetic, dream-friendly, a few nice spots for kissing, a simple table for the sharing of food, a comfortable spot for intriguing conversation, a moon viewing corner.
In the last years I've been having a love affair with old 120 year old teak structures from Java called joglos and limasans. I go to Java myself and select the structures in the villages. Then we bring them back and start working on a design that works within the limitations of these extraordinary structures.
If you have a love attack and would like a joglo of your own in Bali... let me know...
we can show you what we are working on...
I'm Argentine-American. Hablemos en español, français, italiano.
