  • What a lovely, comfortable and immaculate home! We greatly enjoyed being able to stretch out in all the room available. This would be a terrific home for a family visiting the big island.

    Response from Faith:

Thanks Valerie, we hope you enjoyed your birthday vacation.

  • This house is wonderful, so open and spacious. The screened in porch is the best in the evening and at night. We sat and listened to the sounds of the jungle while lounging on the deck furniture. And you can access 2 of our favorite spots on the big island in 15-20mins, the Kapoho tide pools (wander away from the first few & you'll find your own private swimming pool size tide pool in every direction) and Ahalanui, a large pool that holds dozens of people and is thermally heated with fish swimming around your legs. Faith answered all of our questions and was great to deal with. We can't wait to return.

    Response from Faith:

Thanks Michael, come back as soon as you can.

  • I agree with the positive reviews already here. Hale Melemele is clean and modern, a very well kept house. We were 2 adults and 2 under-10s, and we had plenty of room. The two bathrooms were particularly welcome. Good size bedrooms with lots of closet space and good beds, large kitchen-dining-living room that opens via full-sized double French doors onto a generous lanai. The only issue we had were with the dining chairs, which probably need to be replaced. (I’ve mentioned this to Faith.)

The location is very quiet, with no traffic, no occupied houses nearby, and no roosters. Lovely to listen to all the insects, frogs and lizards at night. It is verdant and lush, surrounded by a dozen different varieties of trees and shrubs.

You're on a double lot with the owner’s other rental. Most of the time nobody stayed there, and so we had a very private experience. Even when people did stay there it wasn’t an issue. I would definitely take this place over the other one if you don’t need the added space (+1 bedroom), as all the living spaces on this one look out onto jungle.

Pahoa is ten minutes away, with several good restaurants (Pele’s for an excellent, inexpensive breakfast, Kaleo's for lunch or dinner), a decent but expensive Natural Food Store and a slightly less expensive regular food store, and a Longs Drugs, and some night life on the weekends. Hilo is a hike of 30 minutes if you need more standard shopping (Safeway, WalMart, etc.) It’s worth it, though, just for the ice cream at Hilo Homemade Ice Cream is the best I’ve ever had outside of our own.

Lava Tree park is right around the corner, Volcano is a half-hour, the coast is twenty minutes...it's a good location for exploring this part of the island. But you will ABSOLUTELY need a car. If you reserve Faith's van, I suggest you also reserve a backup; hers had the misfortune of getting totaled two days before we were due to arrive, and if we had had to book a new rental on the spot it would've been exorbitantly expensive. As it was, we had reserved a backup.

It is the rain forest, so be prepared for lots of rain. We stayed for over a month in Feb. and March, and averaged 1 day partially cloudy, 1 day cloudy, 1 day rain, and it rained most nights. For shorter stays, particularly if you're traveling around the island, this probably won't matter as much.

Faith was easy to reach, and readily answered all of our questions. She was accommodating to a couple of special requests, and generally lovely to deal with.

    Response from Faith:

Unfortunately through no fault of her own our house manager and close friend Nancy had the misfortune of a very traumatizing accident caused by a driver who failed to stop at a stop sign. She was side swiped at full speed just days before your arrival. Fortunately we had a new model car with both front and side air bags so she was able to come out of the accident in fair condition, unfortunately our vehicle didn't have the same luck as our beloved friend.
We had an had an exceptionally cold and wet winter in Hawaii, as did most regions of our country ( more cold and rain than usual- on all islands) but February is typically a wet time on all the Hawaiian islands. We are glad you were happy and comfortable during your vacation. We strive to offer a comfortable home for our guests during their Hawaiian vacation.

  • Very cute and comfortable home. We were all pleasantly surprised at the accomodations this cute little home offered. Plenty of sleeping room and bathrooms for my family of 7. Location is very close to lava tree park and other cool Hilo / Pahoa atractions. It is a bit of a drive to other things that we wanted to see but lets face it this is a big island with alot of ground to cover between all the top must see spots. Thank you for a wonderful vaction home. We all loved it. My kidds didnt want to leave.

    Response from Faith:

    Thanks Glenna,
We are so happy you enjoyed our home and so happy your kids had an enjoyable stay. Our children love our vacations to our big island retreat. Even though it is only 1500 square feet we find it is comfortable for our family of 6.

  • WE LOVED IT!!! Clear and simple... It's unbelievable how perfect Faith's house his! It's impossible for the pictures on airbnb to reproduce how nice this place is! It's clean, it's beautiful and very welcoming. Faith takes (beyond) good care of this house and it shows. Everything you need is in there and the rest can be found near since groceries or a good restaurant are a 5 minutes drive away. Faith was fast to process our last minute inquiry and we are very gratefull for that. When we were in the house she was very disponible and eager to answer our questions even though she wasn't on Big Island at that time. All and all, we expected something nice... we found a incredible gem!

Thanks Oliver, we are so happy you enjoyed our house. Please come back soon.

  • The house is neat, clean and spacious for two couples.
It is located close to Hilo and Volcano National Park.
We experienced some showers, since it was winter. But it does not last long. It is located in a very quiet area, but difficult to find without GPS. Mr. Terry who takes care of the house is very kind and nice.
Although we could not meet Mis Faith, she was kind and responsive.

    Response from Faith:

    Thanks Shoji
Sorry we couldn't meet in person. Because you visited during the holiday season we were busy with family ( my sisters were visiting from New York and San Francisco). We offer directions because gps is not accurate in our area. Terry says thank you for your kind words, he enjoyed meeting you.

  • The Big Island is great. This place is just as promised. The directions to get there are easy to follow. The house is secluded and quiet down a non paved road. The whole house is available and very comfortable. The beds are great. The kitchen has everything. Theer is amply resting spots in the house.
The location is a drive to anywhere. However it is great.

    Response from Faith:

Thanks Andrew, it was really neat to meet you and spend time talking with you. We hope you and your son had a great vacation.

  • It's a beautiful place, really clean and organized. Everything was ready for our arrival and we just had to call Faith when we arrived on Big Island.
Recommend going there during the day for the first time, so it's easier to find, but once you are familiar with the region you'll find no problems in exploring the city. Definitely recommend staying there.

  • Faith has a beautiful house, very clean and spacious. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need. You definitely need a car to stay here, as the house is still quite a bit from Pahoa center. Faith was very responsive to all our requests. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this location.

    November 2013
    Response from Faith:

Thanks and we are very happy you enjoyed your stay. Yes a car is needed for anywhere you stay on Hawaii island. Unlike Oahu or Maui where public transportation is easily accessable. This is why we decided to offer a rental car with our house.

  • We stayed in Faith's parents' house. It's a beautiful house with everything we need. 5 of us stayed there comfortably for 2 nights. Highly recommend!
