About this listing
Clean and stylish light-filled 1BR loft apartment (800 sf) in a small historic building. High ceilings, mellow vibe and a sweet cat to greet you when you come home :-) Prime location in Flatiron/Gramercy. Featured in The Guardian October 2011!!
*** no film shoots ***
Beautiful light-filled space with adult feel, perfect for a couple (not particularly kid-friendly). One block from Madison Park, in between the Flatiron District and Gramercy Park.
Great for foodies - aside from a gourmet-equipped kitchen, the apartment is a short walk from the world-famous Eataly, the Union Square Farmer's Market and Curry Hill as well as tons of great restaurants. If fashion is your thing, it is also right near Dover Street Market and ABC Carpet & Home. One block from #6 train, 2 blks from N/R train.
BEFORE READING ON: there is a beautiful friendly declawed Abyssinian cat who stays in the apartment (see below for details). He needs very little care. If you are allergic to cats though, this rental is sadly not for you.
General Features: intercom and buzzer, keyed elevator, stairs are also quick and convenient (4th fl). Double-hung windows provide extra sound protection and special privacy shades adjust for light, all lights are on dimmers. I'm in the arts so there are original prints throughout the apartment and even a 1936 Sohmer "Cupid" grand piano in the living room that is tuned and playable at any hour (nice thick walls). Air conditioning is adjustable and silent, with separately controlled units in living room and bedroom. There is no TV in the apartment... but there is a fantastic stereo, a 27" retina imac and high-speed wireless internet.
Bedroom: 14 x 15 feet w/king-size bed, luxury linens, wall-mounted bedside lamps and tables. Large full-length floor mirror. One empty closet is provided for guest use, equipped with three shelves and 8 sturdy wooden hangers.
Living Room: 16 x 36 feet, open plan. Large desk with 27" Retina Display imac, wireless keyboard and trackpad, printer available upon request. Bang & Olufson stereo with CD, radio, cassette and airtunes hookup (you can play your own music via wireless itunes). CD collection of jazz, international, film and friends' music. Large leather sectional sofa, longer and wider than a twin or day bed (but not a formal sofa bed). Again please note: no television. So if you hate cats and love TV, we're not looking at a good match ;-) Lots of unique books on NYC history, including the building itself, which used to be the Tiffany stained glass factory.
Kitchen: fully equipped gourmet kitchen with All-Clad cookware, granite countertop, Miele appliances - gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher - plus refrigerator and freezer, toaster, kettle, blender, microwave and a Keurig coffee-maker with coffee pods provided (a Chemex with filters can be provided upon request). Ergonomic gel mats on the kitchen floor and a variety of cutting boards. Stocked pantry items include cooking oils and vinegars, salt/pepper, sugar and spices, flour, pasta, rice and some grains. Let me know if there's something special you'd like to have on hand. There is a Miele washer and dryer inside the apartment.
Bathroom: 5 x 11 feet, designed in spa/zen-style. Long Corian countertop, granite flooring, bamboo tiles. Luxe shower with solid water pressure, a rainfall shower head plus a handheld unit, river-rock flooring and an artisan glass wall - please note there is no bathtub. Spa towels and spa-sized soaps, shampoos, conditioners and lotions provided, also a hair dryer.
***there is a mellow older cat in the apartment. He is super friendly and you will have NO litter duties. (He uses a special pine litter that truly does not smell at all.) All he needs is to be fed one can 2 x a day, be given fresh water and whatever love you care to spare. All food is stocked in the cupboard.
***Arrivals after 8 pm or before 3 pm may incur a $50 fee (max) depending on my schedule and the amount of notice you can give me.
Guests have full access to the apartment. As noted above it is stocked with pantry basics, coffee and tea, a hair dryer, designated closet space, umbrellas... everything but a television! 24-hour self-serve elevator, and stairs are also accessible.
Interaction with Guests
Guests enjoy total privacy although I am nearby, a text or email away should you need anything. Note that I do live in this apartment - it's not a "vacation property".
It's super safe, not deserted but not crowded. In nice weather you can walk anywhere - ten minutes to Chelsea, East Village, etc. Curry Hill is a block to the east, with great Indian food and groceries... Eataly is a block to the west, with everything under the sun... that plus a handful of great gourmet restaurants nearby, it's an especially great neighborhood for foodies! Madison Park is a block away, with interesting public art and some nice peaceful green. And the original Shake Shack.
The 6 train and the N/R are right nearby, so you have the rare treat of being east but able to get to the west side pretty easily. Express buses run up and down Park and Madison Avenues, great for museum trips. There's a Citibike dock right across the street.
The main rule is the Golden Rule. Otherwise a book with house rules as well as city and neighborhood guides and takeout menus are all in the apartment. Guide includes wireless access codes, appliance instructions, arrival/departure instructions etc.
