The space

If you stay here, you can walk everywhere or ride a bike instead...

This vacation studio, in the garden behind our home, is part of an older, quiet neighborhood, yet it's right in the middle of all the action! You will be within a few blocks of many of Austin's best restaurants, cafes, film, theater, music venues, and the crown jewel parks of Austin: Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail, Zilker Park, Barton Creek Green Belt and Barton Springs Pool.
See our AirBNB Guidebook for details.

Perfectly located for both the ACL Music Festival and SXSW. The Zilker neighborhood is attractive, safe, walk-able and classic Austin.

The 10' x 20' room has a queen size bed (sleeps 2) + a very large L-shaped couch (not a sleeper-sofa), where another person or 2 kids can sleep in a pinch.

There are many nearby restaurants within a 5 to 10 minute walk as well as a small grocery store. There is a small refrigerator, coffee and tea makers, microwave.

You have your own patio and garden, for relaxing. There is also an outdoor ping-pong table, under a grove of pear trees. The studio has high-speed internet access.

We are a small family, living in the front house, and are great fans of vacationing in Austin! We can provide maps, excellent tips for music, feasting, biking, swimming, and generally enjoying Austin.

Walking or biking, you will quickly get to all the best that central Austin has to offer.

Guest access

Guests have access to the back yard, which includes an outside sitting area under a large Oak tree as well as access to our ping-pong garden which is along the path to the studio. Parking is available at the curb in front of our home.

Interaction with guests

We are available during your stay to help with any questions and we love to share tips about favorite Austin destinations!

The neighborhood

SEE OUR AIRBNB GUIDEBOOK for this listing.

The Zilker neighborhood is surrounded by parks and commercial businesses. We are within 2 blocks of restaurants, movie theaters (Alamo Drafthouse South), a coffee shop and more.

You can walk to Austin's best public parks including Zilker Park (volleyball, kite-flying, soccer, picnics). Barton Springs pool, Austin's largest natural spring-fed pool, is open year-round, and only a few blocks away, as is Lady Bird Lake - for hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, paddle-boarding and fishing. One of our best-kept secrets is the 8-mile long Barton Creek Green Belt, which offers mountain biking and hiking trails, rock-climbing (limestone cliffs) and swimming holes (depending on rainfall).

Downtown Austin is a pleasant 20 minute walk away, or a 4 minute car/bus ride. The Austin Convention Center is at the far end of downtown and best accessed by bike, bus or taxi.

Other fun places to explore nearby: The South Congress business district for bohemian shopping and music venues, the Bouldin neighborhood - a nice 15 minute walk away with more local dining and our Performing Arts Center.

We provide a detailed map of the immediate area with many of our favorite destinations highlighted - the map is part of your welcome package.

Getting around

You can access Austin's public bus system, use a car2go, Uber, walk or rent bikes (our preference) ! Bike rental is just a few blocks away, as well as a city-wide bike system: Austin B-cycle. If traveling by car, there is parking outside our home on the street.

Other things to note

The studio is one room + bath. The room is furnished with large sectional sofa, queen size bed and a small sitting area along windows to write/work.
The sofa does not have a pull-out bed.

Food preparation is limited: there is no stove - there is a medium-size refrigerator and a few small appliances.

We are avid readers and keep a collection of books in this room which you are welcome to browse.

The other half of the building has a separate, small work-space (with its own entry) which the owners occasionally use during the day, during normal working hours.

Since we also use this studio as our guest quarters for family and friends, we only reserve 8 weeks in advance. We do make exceptions for major festivals and events such as SXSW, ACL.

We are from Austin, TX and both my husband and I teach at the University of Texas. He is also a designer of modern homes and I have a strategy firm that works on social impact issues.

We especially enjoy being able to walk and bike to many of central Austin's parks, restaurants and music venues.
