Just one mile from the Ocean Beach pier, the second longest pier in California. It’s an amazing, panoramic location from which to drop a fishing line (no license needed), take a romantic stroll, or grab a burger and a beer at the OB Pier Café.

We had a great stay at Helene's place! It's a charming, simple, surfer-meets-vintage-hipster bungalow. The board games were a surprise and welcome touch - we enjoyed a fun late-night game of Taboo. We'd only wished we'd had the time to enjoy the hammock and patio fireplace in the back yard during our stay. It seems the perfect place for a relaxing evening al fresco. The organic grocery is a very short walk, and coffeeshops and the Cuban patisserie were about ten minutes away by foot. Helene was super responsive when we had a question. It was really easy to check in and out.
We thank Helene for moving out of her home for a week, we found it very comfortable. The coved ceilings, wood floors and excellent floor plan embraced our family of 5 adults, a teen and a toddler. The recommended restaurants and grocery stores are so close one can walk, as is the beach. We loved them all. Airport and Zoo are a short drive away. There are lots of games, plenty of towels and comfortable beds. We cooked several meals and found the kitchen suitably equipped, just add food and spices. It was unusually cool, and the floor furnace and space heaters allowed all to be comfortable. The yard, porch and patio provide extra seating to read a book or have a meal. Reserve and relax. It was our first airbnb experience. We can't wait until next time.
We were 2 families with 2 kids and we really loved the location and the house set up with the airstream. Helen was very accommodating because she graciously allowed us to check in early since we had an early flight. It was helpful having our own parking spots as the streets become crowded in the evening. Something to note however is that cleaness wasn't at its best and the kitchen equipment is not intended for those who want to cook (especially for Thanksgiving), or dine together (not enought knifes or forks for all of us at the same time). And finally, you can clearly hear the airplanes that started really early in the morning around 6AM and probably because it was an holiday weekend, heavy traffic.
It has only been a day, but I already miss this little home away from home! First off, Helene was great to work with. She was fast and efficient. She also made us feel right at home. The purpose of my trip was to celebrate my 30th birthday with six of my closest girlfriends for three nights. It might have been a little crowded with one bathroom and seven females, but we made it work. The beds were all clean and comfortable. The whole house was fairly clean. We ended up renting the silver bullet which was awesome! It has been completely redone, and we all thought it looked like a picture right out of a magazine. The backyard is fabulous! We probably could have spent hours out there if we hadn't been ten minutes away from the beach. It was an easy walk to the beach, restaurants and shops. Ocean Beach was clean and not too crowded. The location of the house also made easy to come and go from the airport. Our main purpose was relaxation, but Sea World and the rest of San Diego were not too far away. I would highly recommend this gem of a spot to anyone!
It was our first time using airbnb. I was a bit nervous since we were traveling as a big group AND with kids.
The space was perfect! It was so good to have a little home base away from our real home.
We had a fantastic week in the Historic Spanish Gem! Five of us in total including three kids who loved the walk to the beach and the airstream trailer in the garden! Big thanks to Helene for making sure all was ready for our arrival. House very clean which is a big deal for me as a mom on holiday!! Only small issue with our lovely co-holiday makers, great group of young French girls and guys staying in the flat over the garage. As the communal garden table and BBQ are located right outside the bedroom windows of the house it was pretty noisy when they were out partying and we were trying to sleep....don't blame them, just we are oldies and our kids needed their beauty sleep! Didn't spoil our time in the house, but to make others aware that you need to be tolerant of party time neighbours. Thanks to all.
Great stay! Nice clean house with all commodities, beach and small shops at walking distance.

About the Host, Helene
HI! I am a photographer and my husband is a musician and scientist. Our house is our sanctuary and we love to share it with others for their own little slice of paradise while on vacation or staycation. The Juniper Zen Palace is a 2 bedroom house and serves as our primary residence, although we vacate when the entire home is rented. We have an extra detached guest suite with its own bathroom, fridge, and microwave that is available as well and sleeps 2, or is available with the entire house for an additional charge. Our pride and joy is our Mobile Love Den, a 1958 Dalton canned ham that is fully restored and has gotten rave reviews so be sure to check that out if that sort of thing floats your boat!
We will also rent out our inside guest bedroom by itself sometimes, so email if you are just looking for one room. We have a small dog, June Bug, who is a Boston Terrier. She stays at her friend's house when the entire home is rented. If you intend to rent the suite or spare room, please be warned that she may come in for a morning snuggle and may jump on your luggage when you first arrive.
Our home is a charming early 20th century craftsman that has been nicely restored and is designed in our own eclectic style. If you rent the whole house, you'll have shelves full of LP records, cd's, and great books to keep you company. Also at your disposal are fresh fruit and veggies from the garden, backyard bbq, fire pit, cabana and banquet table with night lights, hammock under the tall bamboo and banana trees, and many more simple but fun delights. We truly do love hosting people and have had great guests from all over the world gracing the pages of our guest book.
