Welcome to Wellstone Center in the Redwoods! We're a writers' retreat center surrounded by redwoods with an ocean view. Our week-long writer retreats provide an ideal escape for writers looking to develop their craft in a peaceful setting.

The space

The picturesque Pool House, named for its close proximity to the pool, features a kitchenette (without sink and oven, though there is a sink outdoors that can be used and an electric stove inside, plus a BBQ outside), a queen-sized bed, a futon/lounge and a small loft area under the roof, where there is an additional futon. It has it's own bathroom and shower. It's important to remember that all food should be kept in the refrigerator because we're so close to nature that bugs can easily get into any food left out.

The home of the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods offers people who seek tranquility and peacefulness the perfect spot to spend a long weekend or restful week or two. We encourage writers to stay for week-long retreats in order to finish their current work in a nurturing creative environment.

We are ideally situated for day trips to all the magical sights this part of California has to offer. Up here at the end of the road you will find luscious flora and fauna, a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere and you can experience the best of two worlds: the redwoods that literally grow in the back yard and the ocean that is only a short drive (or bike ride) away.

Guest access

Guests are encouraged to use everything that our home has to offer, including:

-Swimming pool: Complete with several lounge chairs and comfortable seating, we encourage you to lounge by the pool while enjoying a good book (or borrow one from our library). Sorry.... you might be eyeing the hot tub, but we usually don't turn it on. Please don't be too disappointed, there are many other things to do!!

-Shared library: We have books from genres as varied as travel, literature, Buddhism, meditation, writing, and even some works by past writers who've stayed here and Steve (our resident writer and co-director).

-Fully equipped kitchen (shared): Complete with pots, pans, utensils, and almost any kitchen gadget and dishware you can imagine. There is also the possibility for BBQing outside. We recommend to all our guests that they - depending on their preferences - go to one of the great local restaurants close by or bring with them food that they can cook here (and yes, store in our fridge!).

-Private trails: From the back of the house you can take private trails through the redwoods.

-Bocce ball, small putting green: If you need a break from writing or just love to play bocce or golf we have both steps from your room.

-Pizza oven: Bake your own pizza! (This might require that you bring your own wood).

-Community courses, such as yoga and OpenMic Night, and weekend workshops on topics like nature photography or a "Find Your Voice" writing workshop with a best-selling author. For more information, visit our website at (URL HIDDEN)

Interaction with guests

We always welcome our guests personally and offer them a small tour around the property. We say a few words about our community here and the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods. Any further interaction is up the the individual guest - many come here to spend a romantic few days here or meditate and go into themselves. We do not push anyone to have a conversation and respect privacy, but one of us is also always accessible and happy to lend an ear.

Other things to note

Please follow the directions to the house that we give and NOT your GPS. People get misled that way!!

Please read: (thank you!)

We ask our guests to treat our premises, but especially flora and fauna, with gentleness and respect. We live close to the forest - on occasion a spider may get lost in your room. Please don't be afraid and forgiving... We put a lot of effort into cleaning your room!
To fully experience relaxation, we suggest guests refrain from using computers or cell phones outside. Please use your laptop only in the designated area in the living room (or your own room).
We hope you can understand our motivation for keeping a largely digital free environment - thank you!
We discourage those who want to have parties from coming to the Wellstone Center, but people who love to hike, to be out in the fresh air, eat wonderful, healthy food and live in a more balanced and aware life are very welcome!
Please take off your shoes inside the buildings. Ideally, bring your own slippers.

Great hosts from start to finish. Steve gave us a tour of the property and my husband and I enjoyed speaking with him and we especially thank him for the hike. The Pool House in the Redwoods was clean and cozy. The property is beautiful, quiet, and full of character. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a getaway surrounded by nature.

Gorgeous place! Serene and perfect for what we were going after: a quite weekend to write, reflect and enjoy sharing stories. The view is incredible!!! I can't say enough how lovely this place is! Steve is a lovely fellow and welcomed us kindly and warmly. It would have been nice to know that the hot tub was not turned on as we had planned to lounge there, oh well! It is a short and sweet drive to Capitola where we enjoyed brunch (Avenue Cafe), walked around the town and relaxed on a bench overlooking the sea. I wish we could have stayed longer but had to attend to a death in the family, which the host wasn't too receptive of (in terms of a slight refund) - a bit of a bummer actually. Other than that I would love to come here again for a short retreat and buy some lovely treats from their WellStore!

We are the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods, a small community in the California redwoods seeking to promote an atmosphere of tranquility and calm, to bolster the talents and capabilities of people through workshops and author talks and writer residencies, including programs for writers under the tutelage of a New York Times best-selling author, and to work to make a difference bringing attention to issues such as climate change, respect for the environment and nature, development of the young, organic gardening and healthy, active living. We are accepting visitors through Airbnb for private retreats, offering an introduction to the beautiful setting in all its variety in the hope that those who are enchanted by Amigo Road - and so far we have yet to meet anyone who has come here and not been enchanted - will come back later to participate in Wellstone Center in the Redwoods programs and activities.
