The Space

The picturesque Pool House, named for its close proximity to the hot tub and pool, features a kitchenette (without sink and oven, though there is a sink outdoors that can be used and an electric stove inside, plus a BBQ outside), a queen-sized bed, a futon/lounge and a small loft area under the roof, where there is an additional futon. It has it's own bathroom and shower. It's important to remember that all food should be kept in the refrigerator because we're so close to nature that bugs can easily get into any food left out.

The home of the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods offers people who seek tranquility and peacefulness the perfect spot to spend a long weekend or restful week or two. We encourage writers to stay for week-long retreats in order to finish their current work in a nurturing creative environment.

We are ideally situated for day trips to all the magical sights this part of California has to offer. Up here at the end of the road you will find luscious flora and fauna, a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere and you can experience the best of two worlds: the redwoods that literally grow in the back yard and the ocean that is only a short drive (or bike ride) away.

Guest Access

Guests are encouraged to use everything that our home has to offer, including:

-Swimming pool: Complete with several lounge chairs and comfortable seating, we encourage you to lounge by the pool while enjoying a good book (or borrow one from our library).

-Shared library: We have books from genres as varied as travel, literature, Buddhism, meditation, writing, and even some works by past writers who've stayed here and Steve (our resident writer and co-director).

-Fully equipped kitchen (shared): Complete with pots, pans, utensils, and almost any kitchen gadget and dishware you can imagine. There is also the possibility for BBQing outside. We recommend to all our guests that they - depending on their preferences - go to one of the great local restaurants close by or bring with them food that they can cook here (and yes, store in our fridge!).

-Private trails: From the back of the house you can take private trails through the redwoods.

-Bocce ball, small putting green: If you need a break from writing or just love to play bocce or golf we have both steps from your room.

-Pizza oven: Bake your own pizza! (This might require that you bring your own wood).

-Community courses, such as yoga and OpenMic Night, and weekend workshops on topics like nature photography or a "Find Your Voice" writing workshop with a best-selling author. For more information, visit our (email hidden)

Interaction with Guests

We always welcome our guests personally and offer them a small tour around the property. We say a few words about our community here and the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods. Any further interaction is up the the individual guest - many come here to spend a romantic few days here or meditate and go into themselves. We do not push anyone to have a conversation and respect privacy, but one of us is also always accessible and happy to lend an ear.

The Neighborhood

We are surrounded by nature on all sides, but we are just a five-minute drive from 'civilization'. You can enjoy the solitude of this setting and company of our residents and guests or easily head down to Capitola or Santa Cruz and the coast for a different kind of inspiration.

Getting Around

No, we are a bit remote here. We ask all our guests to drive slowly and respectfully toward our neighbors. If you should have trouble finding us, which rarely happens, please give us a call.

Other Things to Note

Please follow the directions to the house that we give and NOT your GPS. People get misled that way!!

House Rules

Please read: (thank you!)

Being at the top of Amigo Road one quickly realizes what a special place on earth this is. The great beauty of the outdoors, including lush plants and trees, hummingbirds and hawks, invites visitors to a serene retreat from the stress and chaos many experience in their daily lives.
We ask our guests to treat our premises, but especially flora and fauna, with gentleness and respect. To fully experience relaxation, we suggest guests refrain from using computers or cell phones or cranking the tunes. Please use your laptop only in the designated area in the living room (or your own room). Actually, we'd really, really appreciated it, if you even left your cell phone in your room or refrained from using it in the kitchen and outdoors. We hope you can understand our motivation for keeping a largely digital free environment - thank you!
We discourage those who want to have parties from coming to the Wellstone Center, but people who love to hike, to be out in the fresh air, eat wonderful, healthy food and live in a more balanced and aware life are very welcome!

Once arrived we'd like to ask you to take off your shoes inside the buildings. Ideally, bring your own slippers or sandals for indoors! If you are coming with a dog, please understand that dogs are not allowed in the main house, but only in your room. Otherwise, our Sally would get very jealous.. :) Also, please do not let your dog sleep on the bed - it makes cleaning very difficult. And unlike many other places, we do not charge a cleaning fee, so thank you so much for being so respectful.
