The picturesque Pool House, named for its close proximity to the hot tub and pool, features a kitchenette, queen-sized bed, a futon/lounge and a small loft area under the roof, where there is an additional futon. It has it's own bathroom and shower.
The home of the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods offers people who seek tranquility and peacefulness the perfect spot to spend a long weekend or restful week or two. We are ideally situated for day trips to all the magical sights this part of California has to offer. Up here at the end of the road you will find luscious flora and fauna, a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere and you can experience the best of two worlds: the redwoods that literally grow in the back yard and the ocean that is only a short drive (or bike ride) away.
We offer access to private trails through the redwoods and on our grounds you can entertain yourself with Bocce ball or just lounge by the pool or sit in the hot tub. We will try to make you feel comfortable and give you an experience that you will not want to have missed. The Wellstone Center in the Redwoods also provides free community courses, such as Sarah's popular German Cooking Course two Friday nights a month, and weekend workshops on topics like nature photography or a "Find Your Voice" writing workshop with a best-selling author. Sarah and Steve were so very welcoming and hospitable. They are there for you as much or as little as you need. I hung out with them a fair bit and had a wonderful time. There is a wonderful hour long hike that begins from their back garden which is amazing. Also, not even an hour from Big Basin Redwood park, where you are truly humbled by nature.
Communicating with Sarah was quick, easy and informative. I left feeling very peaceful, rested and inspired. Wonderful people, beautiful place. Cabin has all you need and is wondeflly comfortable
The place was gorgeous, quiet, and comfortable. We opted to keep to ourselves mostly, but our hosts were so friendly and gracious. It was a much needed getaway from daily life. An oasis of calm!
Very positive experience, the Pool House was the perfect place to get away with our dog and disconnect. Great hiking just steps from the house, and their dog (Sally) provided the perfect trail lead and buddy to our goldendoodle. We would stay there again and recommend it for those looking to get away and stay someplace that is fairly secluded and peaceful.
Sarah was an amazing host! everyone at the Pool house made me feel so welcome and comfortable. The location was also ideal. The first morning I got to see the sun hitting the tree tops as it rose. It was so beautiful and serene. About when I didn't think it could get better, I saw the sunset! This is such a romantic and relaxing getaway. As an added bonus my dogs adored the place and Sally! My youngest pup is about Sally's age so they played together as though they grew up with each other. Thank you so much Sarah for having Shane and me.
I have already informed all my friends and family about the Pool House and definitely plan on staying there every time I am visiting Santa Cruz.
What can I say...we drove up the long single lane road not knowing what to expect. We arrived early and were greeted by Sally, the most mild mannered and well behaved dog around (don't be fooled by her barks). We knocked and were greeted by Sarah who told us a little bit about the place and we were on our way!
This place is only about 2 miles from the nearest grocery (24 hours) - but you don't feel anywhere near civilization when you're up in the trees. You can see out to the ocean, which makes for beautiful sunsets. The pool house was my favorite unit on the property. You're steps away from the hot tub/pool, trails, the backyard - and it even includes an awesome loft - providing further seclusion.
We were able to interact with a fer WWOOFers who were staying with Sarah and Steve - and were even invited for pizza out of the wood burning stove in the back (which were awesome!!)
Overall, great place that provides a romantic getaway or just peace and quiet. Very nice to get away from the city for a bit.
tl;dr: Perfect retreat with wonderful hosts!
Sarah, Steve, and their adorable dog Sally live on a Santa Cruz hillside with an amazing view towards the ocean! The poolhouse we stayed in had everything we needed for a couple of relaxing days. Little kitchen with basic utensils (hosts offered their full kitchen in the main house, in case a larger meal was wished for), small bathroom with a shower, and a quite spacious living area with bed, sofa, and dining table.
After taking a gorgeous hike starting in the backyard, we used the hot tub and pool right infront of our place and enjoyed the beautiful sunset.
What I loved about this place is that everything is right there: hiking, swimming, sunset, great view! Very accessible right at your doorstep!
Sarah and Steve were great. We stayed in the pool house for two days with our dogs and had a wonderful and very relaxing time. Our dogs had fun with their hilarious dog Sally, as she lead us through a beautiful hiking trail. Couldn't recommend it more.
This was our first time staying at the (future) Wellstone Center but it certainly won't be our last. My wife and I had a fantastic two days retreat without our children over the winter holiday and Steve and Sarah could not have been more helpful and hospitable. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable in the Pool House which was our second pick after we learned that the upstairs Zen Room in the main house would not be available for one of the days of our stay. We liked the pool house so much we decided to stay there both days. Steve gave us a great tour of the gorgeous grounds and their growing micro farm and was super nice getting the hot tub fired up for us each night. The incredibly quiet setting at the end of a narrow canyon road with a panoramic ocean view, the dark night sky (we're from Las Vegas), and the seranade each morning by birds all contributed to a magical and incredibly relaxing experience. The highlight was certainly the loop trail through the gorgeous canyon out their back gate. We took two long walks with their awesome trail guide dog Sallie which took us through at least for distinct ecosystms along a small creek and a couple of old growth redwood groves where we lingered just soaking up the majesty and silence. If you don't make time to take this walk you will regret it! Just make sure you bring along either the dog or the map provided by the hosts because there are a few forks and the different canyons can get a little disorienting. Great place and a great value as well- thanks Steve and Sarah!!
What a divinely tranquil getaway! First greeted in our charming rustic cabina with fresh baked shortbread cookies, a flask of orange water and fruits from the garden (Kumquat, kiwi, tangerine...), my husband and I settled into a weekend completely abandoned to leisure. We napped in the sun, and from pool deck and bed, watched it set into the sea. The sound of the pool's waterfall during the day and the intricate and artistic property grounds provided a truly soothing ambiance. Sarah and her partner were both lovely and accommodating, we look forward to visiting Wellstone in the Redwoods again for the relaxed and down to earth atmosphere.
This is a quaint, charming cottage. Great for weekend retreat. The view is spectacular, surrounded by mountains and trees with a view of the pacific ocean. Definitely will want to have a car to drive up the long windy road. The amenities are very basic, but you are able to cook. Cleaning dishes is a challenge because the sink is outside and it has very little water pressure and the water does not get hot in the sink. I suggest bringing your own towels b/c the towels if you mind air dried towels. The hot tub was very enjoyable and perfect for the cold weather. I would recommend this place if you are looking for a peaceful weekend get away.
