About This Listing
Welcome to Wellstone Center in the Redwoods! We're a writers' retreat center surrounded by redwoods with an ocean view. Our weeklong writers' retreats provide an ideal escape for writers looking to develop their craft in a peaceful setting.
The home of the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods offers people who seek tranquility and peacefulness the perfect spot to spend a long weekend or restful week or two focusing on writing projects. We are ideally situated for day trips to all the magical sights this part of California has to offer. Up here at the end of the road you will find luscious flora and fauna, as well as a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere where you can experience the best of two worlds: the redwoods that literally grow in the backyard and the ocean that is only a short drive (or bike ride) away.
The Glass House at the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods is a private bedroom fronting the redwood groves at the rear end of the main house. The room offers a quiet and tranquil vantage on the yard and forest through window-filled walls (with curtains) on two sides and a separate entrance from the back porch. The room comes with a bathroom and shower, a soft queen bed and a small desk so that you can write undisturbed.
If you are a writer looking to stay for a week or two, please send us a more detailed description of what you hope to work on while here. We can help you complete your project, whether short story or long novel. Our weeklong writers' residencies start and end on Mondays. While here, you will even have the opportunity to get feedback on your work during our weekly OpenMic night (Tuesday at 7pm) and join us for our twice weekly yoga sessions (Wednesday and Saturday at 9am).
Those looking for solitude and tranquility among a respectful and mindful community are especially welcomed.

Guests are encouraged to use everything that our home has to offer, including:
-Swimming pool and hot tub: Complete with several lounge chairs and comfortable seating, we encourage you to lounge by the pool while enjoying a good book (or borrow one from our library). We are happy to turn on the hot tub by request - it takes less than an hour for it to completely heat up. We do turn it off again by 10pm at night.
-Shared library: We have books from genres as varied as travel, literature, Buddhism, meditation, writing, and even some works by past writers who've stayed here and Steve (our resident writer and co-director).
-Fully equipped kitchen (shared): Complete with pots, pans, utensils, and almost any kitchen gadget and dishware you can imagine. There is also the possibility for BBQing outside. We recommend to all our guests that they - depending on their preferences - go to one of the great local restaurants close by or bring with them food that they can cook here (and yes, store in our fridge!).
-Private trails: From the back of the house you can take private trails through the redwoods.
-Bocce ball, small putting green: If you need a break from writing or just love to play bocce or golf we have both steps from your room.
-Pizza oven: Bake your own pizza! (This might require that you bring your own wood).
-Community courses, such as yoga and OpenMic Night, and weekend workshops on topics like nature photography or a "Find Your Voice" writing workshop with a best-selling author. For more information, visit our (email hidden)
**The only thing which is off-limits is the upstairs section of our home (where our family resides). We request that guests are respectful of this, especially because we have a relatively new addition to the family, our daughter Coco.
Interaction with Guests
While we do offer solitude, we also enjoy interacting with our guests when they'd like to be sociable. Your level of interaction is up to you, but we do suggest that you share any creative talents you have at our Open Mic Night on Tuesday at 7pm.
We are surrounded by nature on all sides, but we are just a five-minute drive from 'civilization'. You can enjoy the solitude of this setting and company of our residents and guests or easily head down to Capitola or Santa Cruz and the coast for a different kind of inspiration.
There is no public transportation to drop you off here. A car is recommended, but you can also take a taxi.

Being at the top of Amigo Road one quickly realizes what a special place on earth this is. The great beauty of the outdoors, including lush plants and trees, hummingbirds and hawks, invites visitors to a serene retreat from the stress and chaos many experience in their daily lives.
We ask our guests to treat our premises, but especially flora and fauna, with gentleness and respect. To fully experience relaxation, we suggest guests refrain from using computers or cell phones or cranking the tunes. We discourage those who want to have parties from coming to the Wellstone Center, but people who love to hike, to be out in the fresh air, eat wonderful, healthy food and live in a more balanced and aware life are very welcome!
Once arrived we'd like to ask you to take off your shoes inside the buildings. Ideally, bring your own slippers or sandals for indoors!
Due to having a septic tank, we have to be especially careful not to throw anything into the toilet (or sink), especially no bleach containing substances, medicine, wet wipes, tampons etc.
Our tap water comes from a well and is really clean and healthy and very delicious. So, no need to bring bottled water. If it does not make you lose your zen, we would really appreciate if showers were keep to moderate lengths of time. Please DO take a shower, before you get into the pool, as we try to use as few chemicals as possible to keep it clean and crystal..
Also, if you are planning on cooking here, make sure to bring some groceries, because you will not want to leave once you are here :). We are happy to help you out with basic ingredients form our pantry and give you coffee/tea in the morning.
While dogs are welcomed at the Wellstone Center, we do not allow them into any shared living spaces. Please keep your dog in your own room and know that there are dogs already living here that your dog will likely interact with.
Wow, this place is special. I didn't get to meet the owners, but the people in charge while we were there were wonderful. I even had a great time playing with all the sweet animals on the property (goats, dogs, chickens)! The place is a dream. Photos do not do it justice. I left feeling inspired by the conversation, company, and serenity of the surroundings. Thank you, sincerely :) I will be back!
My experience here was truly breathtaking. Such an amazing place. The hosts were generous and kind and the property is serene to the point that you feel at one with nature. I strongly recommend this place to anyone looking to get away from it all. The private trail through the redwoods is like stepping back in time. You could really let your worries drift away here.
I always enjoy staying at the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods. Sarah and Steve are amazing hosts. On this trip, there was one night that we all cooked pizzas in the outdoor stone pizza oven. If there was an over the top super-awesome rating, that is what I would give! Overall just a perfect place to stay and experience.
My husband and I went to Santa Cruz for a "babymoon" getaway and booked with Sarah. It was amazing! I would absolutely recommend the Glass House to anyone who desires a peaceful getaway in the beauty of the redwoods. It was magical and I only wish we could have stayed longer! We were welcomed in, enjoyed a rejuvenating & restful weekend & were sad to leave. Thank you Sarah for hosting us!
The experience was something that in just two nights introduced me to a place that I will return to my entire life with different people that I meet throughout my life. I'm leaving in 45 minutes so it would be impossible to process my experience. But it was perfect.
We enjoyed our stay in the Glass House a lot. The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. I would have liked to be able to lock the doors to our room. One of the residents (Josh) let us hold the baby bunnies and told us all about his experience milking the goats while we watched. Our dog had a super fun time running around with the other dogs too. The hosts were very nice!
This stay my mother, daughter and sister stayed in the Zen suite and Glass House. This was my second time here and their first airbnb experience. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed every aspect of the Wellstone center. Sally even joined us on our walk around the Wellstone Loop. We also purchased the lovely goods and will for sure be back!

About the Host, Sarah
We are the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods, a small community in the California redwoods seeking to promote an atmosphere of tranquility and calm, to bolster the talents and capabilities of people through workshops and author talks and writer residencies, including programs for writers under the tutelage of a New York Times best-selling author, and to work to make a difference bringing attention to issues such as climate change, respect for the environment and nature, development of the young, organic gardening and healthy, active living. We are accepting visitors through Airbnb for private retreats, offering an introduction to the beautiful setting in all its variety in the hope that those who are enchanted by Amigo Road - and so far we have yet to meet anyone who has come here and not been enchanted - will come back later to participate in Wellstone Center in the Redwoods programs and activities.
