About this listing
Welcome to Wellstone Center in the Redwoods! We're a writers' retreat center surrounded by redwoods with an ocean view. Our weeklong writers' retreats provide an ideal escape for writers looking to develop their craft in a peaceful setting.
The home of the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods offers people who seek tranquility and peacefulness the perfect spot to spend a long weekend or restful week or two focusing on writing projects. We are ideally situated for day trips to all the magical sights this part of California has to offer. Up here at the end of the road you will find luscious flora and fauna, as well as a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere where you can experience the best of two worlds: the redwoods that literally grow in the backyard and the ocean that is only a short drive (or bike ride) away.
The Glass House at the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods is a private bedroom fronting the redwood groves at the rear end of the main house. The room offers a quiet and tranquil vantage on the yard and forest through window-filled walls (with curtains) on two sides and a separate entrance from the back porch. The room comes with a bathroom and shower, a soft queen bed and a small desk so that you can write undisturbed.
If you are a writer looking to stay for a week or two, please send us a more detailed description of what you hope to work on while here. We can help you complete your project, whether short story or long novel. Our weeklong writers' residencies start and end on Mondays. While here, you will even have the opportunity to get feedback on your work during our weekly OpenMic night (Tuesday at 7pm) and join us for our twice weekly yoga sessions (Wednesday and Saturday at 9am).
Those looking for solitude and tranquility among a respectful and mindful community are especially welcomed.

Guests are encouraged to use everything that our home has to offer, including:
-Swimming pool and hot tub: Complete with several lounge chairs and comfortable seating, we encourage you to lounge by the pool while enjoying a good book (or borrow one from our library). We are happy to turn on the hot tub by request - it takes less than an hour for it to completely heat up. We do turn it off again by 10pm at night.
-Shared library: We have books from genres as varied as travel, literature, Buddhism, meditation, writing, and even some works by past writers who've stayed here and Steve (our resident writer and co-director).
-Fully equipped kitchen (shared): Complete with pots, pans, utensils, and almost any kitchen gadget and dishware you can imagine. There is also the possibility for BBQing outside. We recommend to all our guests that they - depending on their preferences - go to one of the great local restaurants close by or bring with them food that they can cook here (and yes, store in our fridge!).
-Private trails: From the back of the house you can take private trails through the redwoods.
-Bocce ball, small putting green: If you need a break from writing or just love to play bocce or golf we have both steps from your room.
-Pizza oven: Bake your own pizza! (This might require that you bring your own wood).
-Community courses, such as yoga and OpenMic Night, and weekend workshops on topics like nature photography or a "Find Your Voice" writing workshop with a best-selling author. For more information, visit our (email hidden)
**The only thing which is off-limits is the upstairs section of our home (where our family resides). We request that guests are respectful of this, especially because we have a relatively new addition to the family, our daughter Coco.
Interaction with Guests
While we do offer solitude, we also enjoy interacting with our guests when they'd like to be sociable. Your level of interaction is up to you, but we do suggest that you share any creative talents you have at our Open Mic Night on Tuesday at 7pm.
We are surrounded by nature on all sides, but we are just a five-minute drive from 'civilization'. You can enjoy the solitude of this setting and company of our residents and guests or easily head down to Capitola or Santa Cruz and the coast for a different kind of inspiration.
There is no public transportation to drop you off here. A car is recommended, but you can also take a taxi.
Other Things to Note
Please follow the directions that we give you and NOT your GPS system. People get led to a wrong house this way!!
Please read: (thank you!)
Being at the top of Amigo Road one quickly realizes what a special place on earth this is. The great beauty of the outdoors, including lush plants and trees, hummingbirds and hawks, invites visitors to a serene retreat from the stress and chaos many experience in their daily lives.
We ask our guests to treat our premises, but especially flora and fauna, with gentleness and respect. To fully experience relaxation, we suggest guests refrain from using computers or cell phones or cranking the tunes. Please use your laptop only in the designated area in the living room (or your own room). Actually, we'd really, really appreciated it, if you even left your cell phone in your room or refrained from using it in the kitchen and outdoors. We hope you can understand our motivation for keeping a largely digital free environment - thank you!
We discourage those who want to have parties from coming to the Wellstone Center, but people who love to hike, to be out in the fresh air, eat wonderful, healthy food and live in a more balanced and aware life are very welcome!
Once arrived we'd like to ask you to take off your shoes inside the buildings. Ideally, bring your own slippers or sandals for indoors! If you are coming with a dog, please understand that dogs are not allowed in the main house, but only in your room. Otherwise, our Sally would get very jealous.. :) Also, please do not let your dog sleep on the bed - it makes cleaning very difficult. And unlike many other places, we do not charge a cleaning fee, so thank you so much for being so respectful.
Unfortunately Sarah had to be out of town due to a family emergency, so I wasn't able to meet her during my stay at The Glass House. The resident WOOF-ers were very welcoming though, and gave me a tour of the property upon my arrival.
The Glass House was cozy, if a little stuffy on hot days (none of the windows open). When I opened the door to let fresh air in, a lot of flies ended up in the room as well, which was a little annoying. The bed was very comfortable though and I slept well each night.
The highlight of my stay was hiking the trail, the entrance of which was located right outside my room. The trail was absolutely stunning and takes you through a variety of settings, including redwood groves and open meadows.
The dogs on the property were very sweet and peaceful. All in all, Wellstone is a really beautiful and tranquil place.
Great time! Our three year old Had a blast with the swimming pool and farm animals. Swimming pool, outdoor cooking area and hiking path are all amazing amenities. Highly recommended.
This place is amazing! Beautiful scenery, quiet, peaceful and relaxing. We can not wait to go back. A short drive from the beach to the foothills, you can't ask for more! Comfy clean room and super nice people.
We enjoyed the nature trails adjacent to the Glass house. The glass house was very quiet and the garden around made our stay a relaxing experience. We liked the fact that we could bring our dog, he had a blast with the host's dog Sally. We loved the place and thank our hosts for making possible for us to attend my nephew's graduation!!!
The residents and helpers at the Wellstone Center were wonderful hosts. We felt right at home and felt like we made instant new friends. The house and estate are BEAUTIFUL, well maintained, and a pleasure to inhabit, if only briefly. The room was well appointed and comfortable. The mattress was extremely soft, something I am not used to. Maybe a memory foam?
We appreciated getting to use some space in the fridge, being able to cook, and use the hottub. We also ventured on part of the trail system behind the house, which takes you into a gorgeous canyon.
The location was also a great jumping off point for hiking and exploring the area.
We would definitely stay here again and will recommend it to others!
Yes Sarah was inviting and made me comfortable and some suggestions. The room was like listed

We are the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods, a small community in the California redwoods seeking to promote an atmosphere of tranquility and calm, to bolster the talents and capabilities of people through workshops and author talks and writer residencies, including programs for writers under the tutelage of a New York Times best-selling author, and to work to make a difference bringing attention to issues such as climate change, respect for the environment and nature, development of the young, organic gardening and healthy, active living. We are accepting visitors through Airbnb for private retreats, offering an introduction to the beautiful setting in all its variety in the hope that those who are enchanted by Amigo Road - and so far we have yet to meet anyone who has come here and not been enchanted - will come back later to participate in Wellstone Center in the Redwoods programs and activities.
