The dining room entrance to the Aspen Suite is just next to the kitchen of the main ranch house- the heart of our home- and available to share if you would like to cook something. Just let us know in advance, and also if you require extra refrigerator space . Please note: The courtesy of cleaning up after eating and cooking is a house rule. Thank you!
Interaction with Guests
We are a working family, with our young adult "kids" sharing the home, but separate from the Aspen Suite. We all do our best to offer you a quiet and private experience, and yet we are right there in the front of the house if you should need anything. Sometimes guests enjoy sharing a meal or conversation with us, sometimes our schedules do not allow for that. We always want you to feel at home, free to share common areas, and be an honored guest. Just let us know if there are any needs or requests that we can accommodate.
The rural environment makes it possible for you to take a stroll past pastures and farm animals. Our neighborhood is composed of those who live here, and not a through street, so it remains quiet, secure, and peaceful. Quick access to Highway550 and Hwy 160 and a 15 -20min ride to Durango gives access to restaurants, shopping, and attractions. Since Durango, though a small city, gets very, very busy -many guests find it is nice to be just outside of the hustle and bustle.
You will need a car for exploring the area.If you fly into Durango LaPlata Airport(DRO) rentals are available from National, Hertz. Enterprise, and Alamo. Word of caution: last minute rentals are not usually available, and booking online is highly recommended. Budget car rental has moved off site from the airport, and their shuttle service does not always operate. We have also seen that they have very limited staffing for their satellite location. For this reason they are not recommended as a first choice.
Other Things to Note
It is important to note that the Aspen Room is located within the main ranch house on the north end of the home. It is not a separate building, such as the 2nd Wind Adobe Guesthouse, our other listing on Airbnb. Guests who stay in the Aspen are more likely to have interaction with the family, and yet, privacy is mutually respected.
Absolutely no smoking- we are strictly smoke free.
There are pets on the property, but we cannot accept reservations for guests with pets.
Quiet hours after 11pm for the courtesy of all. If you are arriving later , please be aware of guests in the Adobe Guesthouse, and respect their privacy by parking your vehicle in the spot designated by the pasture fence in the front yard. Thank you!
I stayed here for five days and had a terrific time with Tom & Gail and their family. The ranch feels safe & isolated while being only a short drive into town, and the Aspen room is a perfectly appointed suite for one or two. It is a very serene place to unwind or catch up on a bit of work. I really enjoyed using the full kitchen to make some healthy meals . Tom & Gail were extremely accommodating to anything I needed. It felt just like being at home, which is the highest compliment I can give!
Gail and Tom were fantastic hosts. The room I stayed in was incredibly nice and had just been remodeled to include a very nice new bathroom. The room also had great views of the property and the sunrise. I also had access to a grill area outsode and my own dining area. Gail was also extremely nice and helpful with recommendations about the area. I would absolutely recommend staying here if you are in the area.
Gail and Tom were great hosts. I will gladly return when in Durango. Homemade soup was delicious.
Gail and Tom were wonderful hosts. Generous, open, warm and very welcoming. Everything that was in the suite, from the furniture to toiletries to lighting were all very thoughtfully put together. They really take the time to consider what folks would want. The suite has windows on 3 sides of the room with view of the mountains. The room is also very private and quiet and is a short and beautiful drive into Durango. I highly recommend staying here.
The room was wonderful and Gail was exceptionally helpful and welcoming. We will definitely return here!
Gail and Tom surpassed our expectations as airbnb hosts. This was exemplified by the call we got on our way to their home, expressing concern regarding the snow that was falling and our safety. The accommodation was spotless, comfortable and we were made to feel "at home".
As travel conditions were not ideal for travel into Durango, they hosted us to an evening meal and we spent hours getting to know one another.
Superb experience and we can highly recommend this site. Thanks Gail and Tom
We had a great stay at 2nd Wind, perfectly organized and we were able to self-check in, which worked perfectly. We actually stayed in the Adobe Guesthouse which was extremely nice, clean and well kept. We had everything we could need, including a ready stove/fireplace and full breakfast supplies. The property is well placed for Durango, yet in a tranquil area a few minutes outside of town with beautiful landscapes. Gail and Tom were very helpful and nice in giving advice on what to see and do in Durango!

Originally from the Hudson River/Shawangunk region of New York State, Tom and Gail re-located to Colorado in 2006 to explore the amazing southwest culture.Through Airbnb, we enjoy opening our home and hospitality to people from, so far, over 27 countries.A guest from Belgium once said she was trying to determine if she wanted to be a desert or a mountain dweller- here in the "4 corners " of the United States, we have ready access for both choices. All seasons have their beauty, and are easy to adapt to thanks to a moderate climate.
Tom is a craftsman who can build or fix anything! His warm personality and smile is his trademark, and his Irish roots are part of his love for sharing stories, ideas, and conversation. Tom is great at noticing your need and offering his assistance. He loves to ride "the orange carrot" his road bicycle, and explore the natural scenic beauty of the area.
Gail has been everything from a cook, to a singer, to her current work for United Airlines at Durango-La Plata Airport. She is also a very "hands on" type of person-with landscaping, homeschooling, and massage therapy, in her background.
We appreciate the heritage spirit of the Southwest, the scenic beauty, and laid back Western style of Durango, with friendly people and a strong sense of community, culture, and connection with the outdoors.
