Our rustic and eclectic cabin is surrounded by redwoods, walking distance from the river, and is a great place to unwind. It's ideal for kids and adults alike. Families will appreciate the swing set, the tree fort, children's books, beach toys, and built in baby gate. Adults will like looking up at the redwoods, the proximity to wine country and the city, and the fun of making fires to keep warm at night inside or outside. Everyone loves the river and the short drive to the ocean.

The space
The Blue House is cozy but functional with about 600 sq ft of space, newer kitchen appliances, and an open layout. There is one bedroom with a queen bed, a loft with a full size bed, and a daybed in the main room.

Mostly what we love is it's location - convenience in closeness (a little more than an hour from SF), embedded in our favorite area of wine country (Russian River and Dry Creek), swimming, tubing, boating in the river, being surrounded by redwood trees and their ability to make you feel small, and proximity to the wild California Coast. It's a great base for exploring the area, but the house is a respite where you can slow down. There is fast internet if you want it, a tv and stereo, but it's also great for just building fires, reading, cooking, and hanging out in the hammocks.

In the winter, stay warm with the EPA certified efficient wood stove and electric heaters. Bring your slippers to stay cozy and curl up near the fire. Beat the crowds and explore the area when there is a lot less traffic.

The house isn't totally secluded, but it's fenced in and feels a little like your own world. It is on a quiet street and is far enough from River Road that you don't hear too much traffic. It's around the corner from any other houses on the street so you get a nice view of the hills from the kitchen and dining room areas. That being said, it is in a neighborhood with some permanent residents and families, so respecting our quiet hours is important. It's not a place for parties.

The house is embedded in a neighborhood that was originally built mostly as river summer homes, but now includes a mix of summer homes and permanent residents. Close to the house, there are a lot of little tiny twisting roads in the redwoods to explore on foot and sometimes you can find dirt cut throughs between streets and behind houses. You can walk to Mother's Beach in just 5 mins if you want to brave crossing River Road or 10-15 minutes if you take the longer, safer way around. You can also walk to Sunset Beach in about 15-20 minutes. Berry's Market is just a couple of blocks away. There you can get sandwiches, coffee, beer and wine, and other basics. Speer's Market is a 5 minute drive away where they have pretty much anything else you could need or want.

If you want more hiking - Armstrong Woods is about a 15 min drive and has spectacular old growth redwoods. There is also Riverfront Regional Park (10min drive) and Sonoma Coast State Park (35 min drive - on the ocean).

As far as wine country goes there is no better area. The wineries are smaller and friendlier then more tourist centric areas. Korbel is right down the street, but there are also some great smaller ones very nearby like Iron Horse, Porter Creek, Artista and Sunce.

The Russian River Area has long been a place that people go to relax, explore, and get away. The people in West County are easy going, creative, and generally open. The towns and neighborhoods are small and full of little gems - some quick highlights include Monte Rio's quonset hut movie theatre, Guerneville's restaurants and Bear culture, Occidental's Friday night farmers market, Petaluma's Seed Bank, and lots of local craft breweries.
