The Space

Hilo Bay Hale BNB is a full service bed and breakfast, where breakfast is included in your price and you can choose from any of our three guests rooms with a private bath and lanai (porch). The kitchen, dining porches and laundry room is shared by all the guests.

Relax and enjoy watching the cruise ships and Hawaiian paddlers pass in and out of the Hilo Harbor from the huge wrap around front lanai (porch) on this classic 1912 plantation home that has survived tsunamis and earthquakes. In 2007, the house was purchased by your hosts, Danny Miller and Dawn Roberts and saved from demoltion. Danny and Dawn had a vision of creating an “Oasis” in the city where visitors to Hilo could rest during their adventures to the islands. Today, visitors from around the world, including research scientists, and archeaologists enjoy the relaxing sounds of the water gardens that surround the house.

Restoration of the house was completed in December of 2008 and offers a glimpse back into Hilo’s exciting history. Architectural features, including ten foot ceilings and original hardwood floors have been restored and complimented with unique bamboo trim, wall treatments and ceilings.

Guest Access

When you stay at the Hilo Bay Hale, we want you to feel at home and relax in the common areas that guests share including the wrap around deck, lobby, kitchen and outdoor dinning area. The wrap around deck offers views of the Bay and Hilo and is a great place to unwind and meet other guests. When you enter the home there is a lobby with a desk, seating area and a collection of books and information on local attractions. Down the hall from the lobby is the kitchen and outdoor dining area where Breakfast is served buffet style from 8-9am each day. You can use the kitchen anytime to prepare and enjoy other meals, snacks, cocktails, tea, coffee etc. and you are welcome to store items in the refrigerator. Below the kitchen is the laundry room that guests can use during the day.

Interaction with Guests

The best part of running a BNB is meeting so many people from around the world. If we do not meet you when you arrive, we will hopefully see
you at breakfast and we are happy to provide tips and ideas for your trip.

The Neighborhood

Located on Ponahawai St., we are in a mix use neighborhood with businesses and private residences and everything Hilo has to offer is an easy walk away, including all the eclectic cafes, galleries and museums that make Hilo so famous. The second largest town in Hawaii, Hilo is a great starting and/or ending point for your Big Island Experience as Hilo International Airport is just a few minutes away.

With the new renaissance of Hawaiian culture and the Hawaiian language, Hilo is at the forefront of the growing awareness of the rich heritage of its indigenous people and Hilo Bay Hale is located in the heart of this wonderfully Hawaiian town.

Hilo and its historic architecture are recognized as the best preserved Pacific township in the entire State of Hawai'i. To this day, downtown Hilo reflects the rich cultural heritage of Hawaii in both architecture and business enterprises. The host culture of native Hawaiians and the core culture of its "rainbow" diversity makes the Hilo experience unforgettable.

Getting Around

If your planning on sightseeing outside of Hilo, we suggest you rent a car when you arrive at the airport. We offer free and safe parking a the house. While there is a Island wide bus service, the schedule is limited. If you are staying only in Hilo you can take a taxi from the airport when you arrive

Other Things to Note

Rooms have one bed per room (King or Queen) and we can add an extra futon(s) so you can sleep up to 3 people per room. If you are traveling with more than 3 people, we would suggest reserving 2 rooms.
