About this listing
Master bedroom. Proper King size bed with real mattress (not two pushed together). Balcony and ensuite bathroom
Family of travelers sharing our dream 'Casa Colonica' near Lago Trasimeno, halfway between Rome & Florence, on the Tuscan Umbrian border. Huge fresh bright 1st floor apartment, traditionally restored with ancient beams, original doors & terra-cotta floors, & brick arches. Two en-suite bedrooms - one with King, one with Queen bed. Bathrooms fitted in elegantly, both with drop showers, one with claw-foot bath as well. Full kitchen, washing machine, Wireless, TV (only for videos), fireplace in winter, mosquito nets and ceiling fans in summer. Large private deck - great for sunsets, BBQs, sunbathing; rambling olive grove, ground floor portico with Indonesian daybeds; shaded back field - lots of outdoor space to enjoy. Cats & huge dog as well. A lovely, quiet escape to write, unwind, hike or cycle, go by ferry to Trasimeno's islands, relax on the lakefront, or stroll the many adorable ancient hilltop towns.
We are a km in either direction from two small villages (bar for morning cappucino or evening aperativo), small grocery store, and tennis court, and 10 km from both the Etruscan hilltop town of Chiusi, in Tuscany and Castiglione del Lago in Umbria with lakefront beaches, bars, restaurants, and a fortress that is the most famous in Italy. Transportation is almost nonexistent bar the train stations, so we've had guests without transport whom I drop off in the am and pick up in the evening in the towns closest to us.
The joy of this region is experiencing the stunning drives through the Umbrian 'Montefalco' wine region (near Perugia and Assisi) in one direction, and the Crete Senese region of Tuscany with Pienza as the center in the other, so a car really is beneficial. Even if soaking in the thermal pools, or strolling through hilltop towns like Cortona & Montepulciano, & visiting hidden Abbeys like Monte Olivieti is more your thing, we are dead center to many of the gems that the two provinces of Umbria and Tuscany have to offer.

The house, while restored, is old. 500 years old. Things are delicate - chains on toilets need to be pulled gently, ancient doors bolted properly, boilers reset now and again. Our couches aren't sealed; our floors aren't polished, so we only eat in the kitchen or on the balcony & are looking for similarly considerate guests so that the apartment maintains its fresh natural charm. If you appreciate a simple uncluttered ambiance (and share our hatred of plastic shower curtains and overly lacquered modern floor tiles!) our home is for you. However, If you need a place to bang and crash around or eat Nutella in bed or couldn't really give a toss about understated elegance maybe a place that can withstand the wear and tear might be better suited for you. No smokers please. And if you like cats and our big German Shepherds, all the better. Thank you for reading!

Ceiling fan in summer, Underfloor heating/wood stuffa in winter, mosquito nets - a rarity in Italy!
We had a great time staying at Cynthia and David's. The apartment was beautiful and they were very welcoming and helpful hosts. The beds were super comfortable and the layout of the rooms was ideal for two couples.
Beautiful apartment with stunning views, an abundance of toys for our toddler, to keep her well amused for our stay. Very comfy bed and great showers. Would most definitely recommend to couples or families, the nearby lake helped us to keep cool.
Staying in Cynthia and David's gorgeous and tastefully renovated apartment was such a treat. After spending time in Rome and Florence we couldn't wait to relax in the countryside, and their home fulfilled all our expectations: a beautiful, peaceful setting; great location close to a lovely lakeside town; a short drive from stunning hilltop villages; and kind and gracious hosts. Cynthia was friendly and so much fun to meet - she gave us great recommendations for everything from renting bicycles to the best spots to have coffee and watch the World Cup. The apartment was spacious and stylish, with a kitchen well-equipped for cooking and a living area and patio made for reading, relaxing and taking siestas. We would love to spend more time in the apartment and had such a fabulous time.
We had a fantastic time staying at Casa Paterna. The apartment is beautiful and just as pictured - in fact, better! Cynthia and David were lovely, so sweet and accommodating. The location is perfect with lots of towns to explore in an easy daytrip. We loved every minute of it and it was hard to leave!
My wife, our wee 8-month-old daughter and I stayed at Cynthia's and David's for two weeks and were absolutely captivated by their beautiful house. Our apartment at the top floor was very tastefully and elegantly decorated and we felt at home right from the outset. Since we had our toddler with us and also visited outside of season, we did most of our cooking in the big kitchen which was very well equipped for our needs. Even though it was only March, we still spent some warm, sunny hours on the fabulous terrace. Furthermore, both Cynthia and David were absolutely brilliant hosts, giving us excellent insider tips on what places to see and which local restaurants to visit. Their boys even helped us light the stove when we were out, warming the flat up before we returned in the early evening. We're hoping that they add a few extra guest rooms to the guest portion of the house so we can bring our friends and their kids next time we visit. Can't imagine anyplace else to stay when visiting Umbria, and we absolutely adored every single day we spent there.
Cynthia and David were congenial and caring hosts, who did everything they could to make my stay pleasant and smooth. Their children were also gracious and a joy to be around, but were discreet and quiet. Gussie the dog was a wonderful greeter, and I also met 2 of their 4 cats, who made me feel at home. The restored historic apartment is beautifully and functionally decorated with lovely details and colors, and is clean and airy. The kitchen is well-equipped and huge. The place also has gorgeous views of the rolling hills, and is about a 15 minute drive from the center of Castiglione del Lago, a fabulous town with a huge medieval castle rich with history, alongside a lake that looks more like a sea. You must not miss the views from the Castle tower and parapets. It is so wonderful to drive such a short distance to enjoy them, from this charming, romantic country apartment with its many conveniences yet old-fashioned atmosphere. I highly recommend it, and cannot say enough good things about Cynthia and David! What a find. I agree with the first reviewer who said she almost wished she could keep it to herself.
Part of me doesn't want to review Cynthia & David's apartment so I can keep it a secret and have it all to myself. That's how amazing my experience was renting it. The location itself is so spectacularly beautiful that I couldn't stop taking pictures of the view. It's remote enough to feel secluded in the countryside while still being 30-60 minutes from Cortona, Montepulciano, Orvieto, Siena and basically every other hilltown we wanted to visit. The apartment was, hands-down, the most beautiful place I've rented on Airbnb. It is larger than it appears in the photos with two big bedrooms and two full bathrooms. Both had rainfall shower heads, one with a beautiful soaking tub that I had to take advantage of. I really wanted to use the large fireplace but the weather was too warm so we spent all of our time either relaxing out on the private terrace or in the well-equipped kitchen cooking the fresh, local foods we bought during the day. Last but definitely not least, Cynthia was an amazing host. She was so fun to talk to and incredibly knowledgable about the area while also being very conscientious about giving us our private space. The day I left their apartment, I started planning when I could next return. Do not miss staying here.
About the Host, Cynthia
The nomadic Yank met the workaholic Brit in China, courted throughout Asia, married in Bali, made a family in Hong Kong, jumped from Bangkok, Tokyo, HK & Sing, quit now and again & traveled Africa & South America, loved & played (and worked some more, let's be realistic), sat on a beach at the earth's end and found out they weren't keen to live in each other's home countries, played 'where would you want to live if you could never go home?,' narrowed it to two, spent a month house hunting in each, chose Italy, restored a grand old property, made it their permanent home, are blessed to have friends from far and wide swinging by all the time. As lifelong backpackers, the more people we share with, the happier we are...
