About this listing
If you're thirsty for something new and a bit of adventure, come and experience real ecological living in a traditional grass-roofed hut. Your porch over-looks the beautiful lush green landscape, Atlantic Ocean and Castle Bruce bay. True paradise!
Built from local hardwood trees for the flooring, local bamboo for the walls and home grown grass for the roof, the hut is an authentic Carib dwelling.
The hut has a double bed (and can also take a single bed upon request) and a large porch which boasts a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean - a little over a mile away - and the two islets of Castle Bruce bay.
There is a separate pit toilet and fresh water shower which is piped straight from the stream that acts as a border to the land. There is a small kitchen where you can cook on firewood or gas, to your preference. The electricity in the hut is limited to one light bulb, but perishables can be kept in our fridge and electrical gadgets can be charged in our house.
In Dominica it is not hard to immerse yourself in nature. Hummingbirds hover everywhere, lizards scurry in the bushes, parrots fly above - and occasionally below you - and flowers and herbs emit wonderful scents. The evening is filled with the sound of the tree frogs and crickets, and in the distance, the waves steadily wash up on the shore. It is beautiful and very peaceful. I'm sure you will love your time spent here and make some very special memories!!
Guests have access to all facilities mentioned above; private room with porch, private kitchen and bathroom (pit toilet and cold shower). You have your own key and parking space and are free to come and go as you please. Towels and toiletries are provided, and a torch (flashlight) also if needed, though we suggest you bring your own too. Due to our remote location and being off-grid, we can only offer wifi via my mobile phone, which is quite slow but fine for checking emails etc.
Our other accommodation, Eden Heights - Coconut cabin, is situated lower down on the property and we ask that guests in the hut respect the privacy of the other guests.
Interaction with Guests
We love to interact and consider Eden Heights as a cross between a bed and breakfast and a homestay. Whether it's cooking you dinner with our homegrown organic produce, showing you how to make your own calabash bowls, or taking you on a hike to see something spectacular that nature has created, we love spending time with our guests! We offer complimentary garden tours of our 2.8 acre property and you are welcome to take the opportunity to get your hands dirty in the garden or even in the kitchen with a local 'ital' cooking lesson!
Breakfast is included in the price and is served on the porch of our house, where we also serve breakfast to guests of our other cabin. Guests can have help from us with planning their day trips, if needed, and ask any questions about the island and its culture, or we can just chat! It's up to you. To give you the most authentic Dominican experience, the breakfast offered is strictly local - local fruits and juice, local coffee, bush tea or hot chocolate (cacao tea as it is known here!), locally-made 'pap' or granola served with fresh coconut or almond milk made from our trees. Boiled or fried plantain is a favourite breakfast dish when it is available!
We also offer our guests to join us for dinner, where we serve vegetarian meals made with home-grown, seasonal produce. A meal is $25 EC or $10 USD per person.
We want you to feel at home and relish in a truly local experience. Help yourself to fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs from the organic garden. Plant a tree! Savour fresh coconut water, learn how to process cocoa or coffee, make your own calabash bowls, press freshly cut sugar cane and discover many other traditional practices that we are excited to show you!
The sprawling village of Castle Bruce is a 25 minute walk away. It is a quiet, friendly place where people usually greet passersby on the street with a 'good morning' or 'good afternoon' and there is a strong community feel. Here you can purchase basic groceries, enjoy a local lunch or dinner (a couple of restaurants also have free wifi), and of course chill out at the beach or river. There are some roadside stands nearby selling fresh produce and there are a couple of stores that sell essential items and basic food supplies should you wish to cook your own meals, but food shopping is best done in Roseau (roughly an hour away) where there is more on offer.
There is lots to do in the surrounding areas; from moderate hiking and visiting waterfalls to bird-watching and visiting the Kalinago Barana Aute model village, and even trekking to secluded beaches! A little further afield are the glorious hot springs, various local health and wellness spas and activities such as canyoning, snorkeling, scuba diving and, of course, chilling out on the calm beaches of the Caribbean Sea.
We are within easy reach of Emerald Pool, L'Escalier Tete-Chien, the Kalinago Territory, segments 5 & 6 of the Waitukubuli National Trail, Dernier Falls, Sari Sari waterfall, and a number of beautiful attractions found in the South-east and centre of Dominica.
I love the safe and peaceful friendliness of our immediate neighbourhood. We have a few rastafarian neighbours who are the most kind and peace-loving folk living simple, self-sufficient lives. Our neighbourhood is also home to a lot of dogs - most of which are very friendly! If you crave a 'day off' from sight-seeing, the walk down to the village is lovely and the beach is always a great and energising hang out spot. We are also very close to some fantastic, secluded river locations that are wonderful for bathing, relaxing and meditating.
We are well connected to the north (50 minutes from the airport) and eastern parts of the island. Roseau and most of the west coast can be accessed within an hour.
Public transport is not too reliable and the accommodation is 1.5km uphill from the main road so I strongly advise you to hire a four-wheel drive car. A rental vehicle will save you time and allow you go explore the entire island as you please much more easily. Rental can be arranged for you or can be booked online and collected at the airport or ferry port on arrival. If you don't drive, I offer a taxi service from and to the airport and ferry terminal and we may also be able to arrange a driver to facilitate your sight-seeing on certain days. Please let me know in advance if you may need this service.
Other Things to Note
Cell phones work and smart phones can access 2g internet with a local sim card and data package, which costs from $2.50ec per day. Slow wifi is available via my mobile phone, best done during breakfast. More speedy internet can be accessed at a local hotel or in the capital, Roseau.
Due to the rugged terrain of the island, we strongly advise you bring comfortable walking shoes to allow you to access locations more easily and safely. It is also wise to bring waterproof casing for cameras, mobile phones and other valuables.
No smoking inside the hut - the grass roof is EXTREMELY flammable!
Sian, Cohen, and little Mario were excellent hosts! They were warm, helpful, and very generous. We had delicious breakfasts every morning made with produce from their amazing garden. Best bread fruit chips and cassava bread on the island! Sian even made us dinner when we arrived late one evening. The conversations flowed every morning, and Sian really helped us learn more about the local community. The hut itself is gorgeous- I couldn't believe it; it's actually just like the pictures! Unreal beauty! I would highly recommend a stay here to anyone looking to participate in sustainable living in a cozy and rustic setting. A+++ for AirBnB experience!
Eden Heights is the paradise on earth. We only stayed for two nights, but actually we could stay forever. Everything is basic/simple, built with bamboo and wood, but nothing is missed. In the night you are surrounded by the sound of nature with a beautiful view on the ocean. Sian is a very lovely and helpful person with a cute little boy, two playful dogs and two cuđdly cats. Her self-made breakfast is awesome. If we come back to Dominica we can hopefully stay at Eden Heights for the whole time of our holidays.
Sian was an excellent host. She is a sweet, helpful, and honest person, which is why she is such a successful host.
Her local knowledge was instrumental in planning our days.
Sian's breakfasts were something we all looked forward to and now miss.
We had a lovely time in Dominica thanks to Sian.
We look forward to a return visit!
The accomodation at Sians place is like paradise! We really enjoyed experiencing such a beautiful spot with such a nice view and a lovely host! Sians good and healthy food, open house and warm-hearted nature made the stay an unforgetable one.
The bamboo cabin is a different and great opportunity to stay at Dominica. Sitting on the porch with a mountain breeze and a great sea-view was so relaxing. Our calabashes we scraped and the guided tour to the Boiling Lake is a great memory.
The hut was one of the most amazing places we ever stayed at. The scenary is amazing, and you are really part of it. Even being totally opened to the outside, the hut was clean and very comfortable. The breakfast with Sian and her family was also a very nice occasion to taste local fruits and know more about Dominica. They are very nice people.
Only thing, we did have issues getting up there with a small car, so I highly recommend having a 4 wheel drive :)
Sian's hut is an absolutely unique experience! We were 3 girls who only stayed for 2 nights, but even so Sian went out of her way to help us out! The breakfast and meals we had with her were honestly great, homegrown food which we have all agreed was the best we have had during 3 weeks in the Caribbean. She was really really good fun to talk to, an absolutely top person who even picked us up and dropped us off at the bottom of her property with our bags.
The property itself was very cool, very loyal to the description, an idyll in the middle of the rainforest. It's worth noting that most people will probably need a car, as its 20 minutes walk from the road and coming back uphill could be difficult. However we didn't find this a problem as we were not there for long and are pretty fit! The shower was cool but a good power and a great view over the bay, unparalleled, the double bed was very comfy and though as 3 it was a bit of a squeeze, as 2 it is be a really lovely space.
The only thing we have to mention is that on our second day there was a VERY heavy rain shower, which resulted in some leaking in the hut. Sian assured us that the roof itself had been fixed before with plastic and that rain must have been running along the beam. Overall it was a really fantastic experience that it worth trying for yourself!
We stayed for 17 days in Eden Heights and felt like being home from the very first moment. Sian is a wonderful host and the breakfast she prepares every morning is delicious, healthy and so very nourishing that we could do our hiking and climbing tours all day without feeling anything missing. Sian's vegan food and the way she cooks is so inspiring for us. Eden Heights and the Carib Hut made us feel home and like being on our honeymoon. The view onto the Atlantic Ocean from there is just overwhelming and we appreciated waking up with this wonderful outlook every morning. Since loving nature this was the perfect place to be for us. Hummingbirds, parrots and the sound of so many other nameless creatures have been our very close neighbours there and we were overjoyed by listening to there music. Eden Heights is located in a wonderful part of the island close to Emerald Pool and the Kalinago Territory. The way to the fantastic beaches at the Northern coast of Dominica is an easy ride. We learnt from Sian so many things about the hugh variety of plants, herbs and fruits and could taste them every day. She even taught us how to make our own cocoa stick. It is just delicious. We certainly will come back ! Thank you Sian, stay healthy and just the way you are. Sunny greetings from Hamburg m. & c.

About the Host, Sian
I have been living in Dominica since 2011 and the beauty and wilderness of the island still takes my breath away... Within a week of arriving here, I knew I wanted to stay and I'm very happy I did! Dominica is a destination unlike any other, and I love to see people as enchanted by it as I am. I am living my dream and loving life with my boyfriend, our 1 year-old son and our dogs and cats. I care passionately for the natural environment and healthy living in harmony with the earth, and as such we grow organic fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. I love to travel and meet new people and discover different cultures, customs and cuisines! I am vegan and like to cook and also grasp every opportunity to improve my skills and learn from others. In my free time you can find me in the garden, down on the beach or chilling at the river - I love to be outdoors! As does my little boy Mario. Come and stay with us, we can't wait to meet you!
