  • We were looking for an affordable place to stay in Hawaii, plain and simple. What we found was so much more. When we arrived, it was after dark. Joanna met us on the street and walked us back to our suite. The odor of Ylang Ylang was so sweet and welcoming as we walked onto the porch. The space is small, but lovingly decorated.

We had a series of "adventures" involving water drenched cell phones and sea urchin wounds which Joanna went out of her way to help us with. We were there with our two children and felt very welcome and our kids enjoyed playing with the dogs

We met and interacted with the other family and older woman who were staying in the other suites and there was a really nice community feel about the whole place.

If you are looking for a spot on the beach with lots of room to sprawl out, this is not the place for you. The kitchen is small and there is not a great space to eat dinner, although there is a small table on the porch and the weather is condusive to outside eating.

Overall, we had a great experience here and would absolutely go again and stay here. Next time, we might try and rent one of the bigger suites.

  • We loved our stay in the Ohia Lehua Suite - private entrance, two room suite with a lounging living room area and clean, comfortable bedroom (murphy's bed) with a kitchenette. Barrie and Johann were gracious hosts and gave us the private time that we were looking for. If we had any questions they were happy to answer them. Johann even lives in the most adorable tiny house on the back of the property (that she built herself) - a MUST SEE!

Weimea is a great little town just down the road (5 min drive) with everything you need food and entertainment wise.. and if you go the opposite direction (toward the coast-10-15min drive) beach 69 is not to be missed.

We really had such a lovely time staying with Barrie and Johann and next time we are back to this side of the island we wouldn't hesitate to stay with them again.

  • after a day of chasing waterfalls in the rain on the east side of the island we ended up at the house. Great location right off the major highway to any direction for the next day. As i followed the trail to the rental i slipped and almost fell on the slick flat rock dirt path leading to the stairs. Once inside we got aqainted with the surroundings. Not much time for that no yard, small rooms, and small bath. We then looked for a heat source because the door was left open all day so it was chilly and in fact never did warm up. There was plenty of blankets but we both slept in our clothes. The next day we took off for more sites and was back just after lunch and that's when we started to notice everything. With the door shut and no fresh air coming in the moldy dingy dust smell started to set in. The shower curtain had mold build up and the furniture hadn't been moved for a long time showing dust build up. So basically the cleaning deposit is a joke as well as the place the tv was tiny 80's tiny and snowy picture to boot. You can grill if you want to cook on a dirty grill with no tools. By far the worst place we have ever stayed at. A person would be better off staying at a hostel at least they wouldn't be disapointed, and have some more money in there pocket.

  • Great place to stay if you appreciate an authentic older style lodging as much as my wife and I do. Everything was great.

  • We actually stayed in the Hibiscus suite (next door to Lehua), but two friends of ours were in the Lehua Suite. We had a fantastic stay. Although we did not meet Barrie, all communication with her was very fast and extremely helpful. She even helped us to arrange car rental when all options on the island were exhausted! Barrie's friend Joanne, who became our direct contact, was EXTREMELY helpful. She loaned us a ton of beach equipment, warm clothes for Mauna Kea summit (which proved to be indispensable), and gave us local insight and directions to some of the best spots on the island!

The location (in the town of Waimea) was fantastic. Although it is a bit distant from both Big Island major airports (around an hour drive to Kona airport), the location (roughly between Kona and Hilo) is a great base if you want to see many different parts of the Big Island . Hapuna, a fantastic white sand beach, is located very close to the house (around 15 mins drive), and it is also close to the amazing Waipo Valley. The property is also very close to the Mauna Kea access road, and is situated in a very beautiful part of the Big Island. It is slightly cooler in Waimea, as it is at altitude, but it is also much less humid than on the coast, and the air is incredibly fresh. Waimea also boasts quite a few excellent restaurants and eateries, as well as two supermarkets to stock up on provisions.

The apartment itself (Hibiscus) was clean, comfortable, and in great condition. There is a nice, very relaxing porch (shared between Lehua and Hibiscus) which we made good use of. There was also a gas grill which was made available to us. Wireless internet was provided at both apartments, and was fast and dependable.

All in all, this was a great experience! We will definitely be back in the future!

I have lived on the Big Island of Hawaii for over 30 years and offer you insights on where to go and what is important to see while here on the island. An antrapaneur I have MANY interests from sustainability, to designing and decorating homes, gardening, and healthy living in general. I have raised 2 daughters here on the Big Island where they love to return and bring all of their friends to share their most favorite beaches and adventures.
