About this listing
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION - It does not get any better than this. Steeped in history, the Thisseo neighborhood overlooks the Ancient Agora and the Parthenon - you are steps to everything from here!
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
It doesn't get better than this for rolling out of bed and on to the Acropolis and Ancient Agora.
This charming neo-classical has 2 bedrooms plus an adjacent garden suite (accessed via two steps down from the main apartment and across the small, shady garden) and sleeps 6 guests in the bedrooms & studio and 2 additional on the twin trundle day beds in the living room. There are 2 full baths and 1 half bath. The master garden suite has a Queen bed and en suite bath (shower only), while the second bedroom has a queen bed and the third bedroom has two twin beds. The apartment wraps around a shady, lush green landscaped garden and there are tables and chairs for enjoying your morning coffee and breakfast al fresco.
The Heritage House is located in the historical center, just one block from the pedestrian path that leads in one direction up to the Acropolis and the Parthenon, and in the other direction to the Ancient Agora and into the narrow winding streets of the Plaka. It is one block from the Thissio metro station, although most of our guests just wander through Plaka to Syntagma Square - a journey of anywhere from 15 - 30 minutes, depending on your route and how distracted you get by the sites and sounds around you!
You will have the exclusive use of the entire first floor and garden area.
Note that our check in and check out times may not be flexible if we have back to back guests but we will always be able to store luggage for you if you use our recommended transfer services. Also note that all arrivals before noon or after 8 PM require that you use our recommended drivers.

The listing was just as described, and as traveling in need of three separate bedrooms, this was just a perfect place to stay. The apartment feels like it belongs in Athens and lends itself to a more "natural" feel of the entire visit. When returning to the apartment, you feel like you're actually living in Athens rather than being a tourist. The Greek people in the neighborhood echo this feeling, making you feel as if you are "one of us", and the entire experience was memorable in this way. To that end, the neighborhood of the apartment is not as touristy as Plaka, so feels more down to earth, but it is still so close to the historical buildings, restaurants, and shopping that you can still easily accomplish all of the "tourist" related goals you're sure to have when visiting such a magical place.
Lastly, Carole does an incredible job facilitating all kinds of fun excursions and her team is absolutely top-notch. Nadia, Nikos, and Dimitri were all a pleasure to spend time with, and none of the excursions were overly priced. Carole has basically taken all of the stress out of having an authentic and action packed vacation in an incredible place. I would certainly book again with her again. Five star experience!
Carole was a superb host. Since she was not in Athens when we were there, her assistant Nadia met me at the apartment, where a large basket with olives, bread, wine and other goodies also greeted us.
Nadia showed me around the apartment and then, using a map, showed me around the neighborhood—the supermarket, wonderful bakery, etc.—and the rest of Athens. (I woud suggest picking up a more detailed free map when you arrive at the airport, which will help you pinpoint locations a bit more precisely.)
Afterwards, Nadia patiently answered all my questions about where to go. I had to phone Nadia with a couple of followup questions, and each time she answered the phone and again patiently helped me.
I loved the neighborhood, which was so close to the Agora and in easy walking distance to everything. Since I was there at high tourist season, I was especially grateful to be staying in a neighborhood away from all that, one that felt residential and where I could go to the produce market and the bakery around the corner and to a funky little cafe filled with old Greek men drinking coffee just a block away. (Turn right out of the apartment and then turn left for one block and continue across the street to the cafe on the far left corner.)
I used Carol's drivers to and from the airport. I didn't compare prices, and though the cost was a bit of a stretch for me, it was worth it for peace of mind. Because we were 5 and my family arrived a day after me, we ended up using 5 drivers at various times. They were all charming and wonderful!
As far as any drawbacks, I was there in August and the mosquitoes in the garden were relentless. There are coils provided but still, we stayed inside and used mosquito spray (which I bought at a lovely pharmacy around the corner) just to run across the patio to the third bedroom.
The apartment is beautifully equipped bathroom, laundry, and kitchen-wise with what seem like new appliances, as well as ample dishes, electric hot water kettle, etc.
The main living area has plenty of space where we could all sit around. There isn't much natural light, which is a plus in August when the outdoor heat and sun are pretty intense.
Finally, Carol's notes about where to go were so helpful in narrowing down all the choices. We especially enjoyed the spice market area and going to the little cheese pie place on Voulis St.
We had a lovely time in Athens to start off our vacation in Greece. We were welcomed by Nadia who gave uw some great locale adresses of the beaten path. We didn't have much time in advance regarding transportation from the airport and to the port, luckily Carole suggested reservations with Nick which made it easier for is! The house/apartment was fully equiped and clean! The patio was lovely as a retreat! The location is perfect and nearby everything, but still in a quiet street. We would't recomend staying with 8people, but it is perfect for 6people!!!
We enjoyed our stay at Carole and Basil's apartment very much. It is charming, very spacious, and perfectly located - within a ten-minute walk to the Acropolis and the Agora. Carole was very helpful and responsive in arranging a taxi ride for us from the airport - and when we arrived at the apartment, there was a basket of wine, bread, and other treats waiting for us, which was a very nice surprise. After we made our reservation, we were provided a detailed guidebook which included some very helpful tips and recommendations - we used the guide to find a good restaurant, a grocery store, and a bakery not far from the apartment. After a long day of sightseeing, it was nice to come back to a place that was comfortable and felt like a home away from home.
We had a very nice stay in Athens at "Historic luxury under the Acropolis." The flat was nice and extremely well located. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go in the ancient part of the city. Carole went out of her way to make sure we had a good time and was very accommodating (arranged to store our luggage, etc.) and responsive when we were in town.
Carole runs this as a business, so compared to some other Airbnb places we've stayed, it was very easy to get tours lined up and arrange for airport transfers. Carole has also put a significant amount of time into creating a "guide" for her guests, so she provides tons of great food (and other) recommendations, etc. that really enhanced our stay.
Because renting this flat is run as a business, more stuff happened outside the Airbnb framework than normal. There was additional paperwork to fill out and the deposit process is handled outside of the Airbnb system, which added a bit of hassle.
Finally, the flat was very nice. Just an FYI - it's a little hard to see in the pictures, but the the room with the European king bed is connected with double doors to the room with the two single beds. (In terms of setup, in the main part of the house, there is a Euro King and a room with two singles, one large bathroom (with shower and tub) and an extra toilet. In the garden studio, there is another Euro King and a full bath with toilet and shower.) Also, the garden studio flat was a bit musty smelling when we were there (April).
Overall, we would stay at "Historic luxury under the Acropolis" again.
Carole and Basils house was absolutely brilliant. It was so comfortable with air con in all the bedrooms. The house was perfect for our party of 8. Six of us were in the house and my parents were in the garden studio. We were greeted by Nadia the house manager who showed us how to work things in the house. we were also given a hamper which included wine, bread and greek delicacies.
The location of the house was perfect. walking distance to the Acropolis and Plaka area. I would highly recommend this house for comfort, location and value.
Far exceeded our expectations.. Thanks

About the Host, Carole & Basil
Who would have thought when I boarded a plane for Greece more than 20 years ago, planning on backpacking through the mountains and then heading north through then Yugoslavia I'd end up making Greece my second home?
But here I am, 20 something years later, running a fabulous Greek vacation rental business with historic homes & penthouses in Athens and traditional Cycladic homes on the island of Tinos, planning Greek travel itineraries and leading small group tours around my adopted homeland and loving the life that I am lucky enough to be living. Of course I did pick up an equally crazy, workaholic Greek husband along the way, as well as a stray Greek animal or two!
Update: End of August 2013 .... This year Basil and I celebrate 10 years opening our Greek vacation rentals with guests from around the world. All these years we've been hopping between Basil's home city, Athens and Carole's home city of Chicago. Time and time again guests in Greece ask us if they can stay in our Chicago home while we're in Athens.... so we're finally doing it - we've just completed the renovation of a fab 2 bedroom 2 bath loft in our 10,000 sq foot Lincoln Park hybrid warehouse (which in a previous life housed a bar and a dance hall, followed by a costume and magic card factory and then a photography studio where probably every Butterball turkey advertisement in the 1980s was shot .... the photos, not the turkeys!)
So come stay with us ... and then stay with us again. Whether we share an ouzo in Athens or a beer and a hot dog in Chicago, we know that you won't be disappointed.
