Little Angel is a studio apartment located in one of the most ancient and historic areas of Rome, between Piazza Navona, Campo de’ Fiori and St. Peter’s Basilica, in the maze of the little alleys of the city centre, a stone’s throw from the most famous monuments of the Eternal City.
This area is also known for its craftsmen and their old traditional workshops. The studio is in front of Castel Sant’Angelo, a few metres away from the Lungotevere, the street running along the Tiber, being therefore easily accessible by private and public transport. You can also easily reach Via dei Coronari on foot, the famous street with its renowned antique dealers. The Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza del Popolo and the Roman Forum are only ten minutes’ walk away.
This apartment has one double bed and another double loft bed so it can accommodate up to four people. It is fully furnished and the kitchen fully equipped. The apartment has a cosy and warm atmosphere and attention has been given to the smallest detail.
It has a bathroom with shower, toilet and bidet, air conditioning and central heating. The kitchenette is equipped with microwave, fridge and all the necessary kitchenware. TV, hairdryer, iron and ironing board are also provided.
From the 1st of January 2011 Rome City Council has imposed a nightly accommodation tax in the city of Rome. The tax is, €2.00 per night (10 nights maximum) per person. Children up to 10 years of age do not pay. The tax is charged to anyone staying in any overnight accommodation inside the city boundaries. The fee, not included in the total rate, must be paid cash at check in time.
Let's be positive first: The apartment is in a great position. Near the Vatican and a stones throw from lots of shops full of curios, vintage jewellery and antiques. Navona Square is also nearby.
You can also hop on the number 64 bus if you want to get across town towards Termini Station. (Whatever you do make sure you stamp it on the bus! The locals never stamp but the bus 'police' can spot you a mile away, will ask to see your ticket and passport and can fine you.)
Now for the negative: when I arrived I decided it was a bit too 'student' for me. It has no windows, which is fine if you're out and about all day, but depressing if you want to chill at the apartment.
During the day it can also be noisy as it's near a main road by the river and next to a number of shops which get regular deliveries by van. There was also a very insistent barking dog! So, on check in I asked to leave after 1 or 2 nights. But I was told I couldn't by Barbara's sister. I accepted this news but later discovered (when I had a chance to go online: WARNING - before you buy a coffee at a cafe that boasts wifi CHECK the wifi works. Most of the time it won't) that the terms of cancellation for this property allow cancellation 24 hrs after official notice. Yet I was told categorically by Barbara's sister that I COULD leave but I would forfeit my entire payment.
It later transpired this is not the case. Once I got online days later I realised I'd been misinformed. I contacted Barbara to ask for a refund. No answer. Airbnb then informed Barbara that she got it wrong but I have received absolutely no recognition of the fact. Nothing, nada, zip.
I would recommend therefore that if you wish to stay anywhere via Airbnb that you read the terms thoroughly in ADVANCE and if you are not happy, don't bother going through the host or their representatives but get straight back to Airbnb. They now tell me that there is nothing they can do as I failed to do so! They said they would inform Barbara that she was WRONG but that seems to have made no impact. She has the money. I assume she is therefore happy. Having misinformed me - intentionally or not - does not seem to have dented her conscience in any way.
So, if you don't mind being a mole in a hole and are prepared to take a punt with no recourse to change your mind, by all means stay here. It's clean, well positioned and the beds are large. It's value for money if there are more than 2 of you. Otherwise you could pay a similar price at a hotel with windows, that's less noisy by booking in advance.
