Location

New Perlican, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Settled over 400 years ago, New Perlican is a quaint fishing village with a scenic harbour rimmed with fishing stages and lots of history. This property is well situated off the main road in a quiet cove which is unusual for this peninsula as the hwy runs through most towns.

This place IS tranquility - relax on the lawn and watch the activities in the cove, whales, caplin, lobster fisherman, bald eagles, loons...

Hike the trail to Hearts Content - starts right outside the door, 1.5 hour hike one way, visit the Heart's Content Cable Station Museum, visit the Winterton Wooden Boat Museum, walk the trail to the quaint fishing village of New Perlican - a half hr 1 way, and visit the heritage landing there, an informative fishing stage and fishery display, in the heritage district of the town. Or visit the beach at Salmon Cove - 20 min drive away, drive the loop around scenic Baccalieu trail - great day trip, hike out to Garlop Point after supper (15 minute walk) with your glass of wine, and watch the sunset over Trinity Bay at the lookoff - bring the binoculars, eagles nest nearby and the whales feed there! A week will pass quickly, exploring all there is to see and do in this spectacularly scenic area of Newfoundland.
In 2010, the Avalon Peninsula was rated by National Geographic as the TOP SHORELINE in the WORLD!!! This rating was based on it's "stunning and natural Integrity, a shoreline that is in excellent shape ecologically, relatively unspoiled, and likely to remain so".

HIKING AND WHALEWATCHING:
I love all the trails, the friendly people, the tranquil cove in front of the house and especially the view across Trinity Bay.

Over 7 species of whales frequent these water in June, July and some years well into August. Feeding on schools of caplin close to shore, you can walks the trails along the shores and whalewatch as you go. Whalewatch boat tours in area also. Icebergs that drift down with the Labrador current often come into the bay and can be seen as later as October. In August the blueberries and wild raspberries are out in abundance, September and October - delicious partridge berries and bakeapple berries are ripe for the picking. There's trouting in nearby ponds, lots of inwoods trails, and the "food fishery" is on in July into August for three weeks, plus all summer weekends - get out and catch yourself some of what was once referred to as Newfoundland's currency: COD!

Local heritage organization - Heritage New Perlican - of which I am a member, has a very informative heritage display in the harbour, across the road from all the fishing stages. It’s a great place to learn some history, and sit and watch all the hustle and bustle of the harbour.

The D'Iberville hiking trail system is maintained, and has boardwalks and stairs in all the right places. You can walk 60 km from Heart's Content all the way up the shore to New Melbourne, along the dramatic coastline varying in elevation and terrain. I can provide trails maps along this route and help you organize a 1 way hike with car drop-off/pickup on 1 end of trail.
