The Space

Happy Hound Cottage is named for our dog, Tahoe—who will happily greet you on arrival and possibly say good night and/or good morning (or not, if you otherwise prefer). HHC is in the heart of Sonoma County wine country (Kenwood), midway between the town of Sonoma and the city of Santa Rosa. Our central location is convenient for local excursions as well as day trips inland and to the coast.

Fun
We belong to several Sonoma Valley wine clubs and would be happy to extend our guest passes to you. In addition to the many, many wineries and tasting rooms in Sonoma Valley, there are 12 within a short walking distance of HHC. Also, we can recommend many restaurants, markets, shopping opportunities and recreational activities.

Cottage
HHC is situated at the northeast portion of our two-acre property and is essentially surrounded by vineyards. It is a newly constructed, contemporary and quiet, detached studio cottage—completely out of sight from our house and all surrounding homes. It has a gas fireplace for warmth and ambience and a ceiling fan for comfort during the hotter weather.

HHC has a kitchen, a five-burner gas range, under counter refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave. The HDTV and DVD are viewable from anywhere in the cottage, as well as Wi-Fi service. Both the sleeping and seating areas look through an expansive sliding glass door, onto a private patio, our Merlot vineyard (steps away) and Sugarloaf Mountain (prominently in view). There is a gas-to-charcoal Weber grill just off the patio,

Enjoy our complimentary “welcome” wine for your first night.

Property
Our two-acre property includes a one acre (Merlot) vineyard, our house, a detached garage and HHC. Our gazebo is nestled in the front garden with views to Hood Mountain and Sugarloaf Mountain (please enjoy!). There is a “you cannot miss it” heritage Valley Oak in our front yard and a majestic Walnut tree at the back edge of our vineyard.

Our raised-beds, organic vegetable and flower gardens are within limited eye shot of the cottage patio (please feel free to wander over and look). Enjoy a stroll through the vineyard, especially fun during bud break in spring, and color change (veraison) and ripening in summer and harvest in fall. Your stroll can continue through surrounding vineyards and through the largest Lavender farm in the country.

Sorry, but absolutely no smoking on the property. Thank you in advance for understanding.

Our Special Sommelier
Do you want a Sommelier and Certified Wine Specialist to take you to boutique wineries, typically “off the beaten track?” Our friend is available for a private tour of up to four wineries. The tour will be individualized to meet your taste and preferences and sense of adventure. (Fee negotiable).

Ready to Go
HHC was completed in July 2012 and is busy hosting guests! As your hosts, we will be sure to help you feel comfortable during your visit and to free refreshed and re-energized when it’s time to return home.

See You Soon!

  • What a great place to spend an anniversary! My wife and I really enjoyed our stay. Carolyn is a gracious host and the setting and property are picturesque. We enjoyed the access to many amazing vineyards within walking distance as well as plentiful nearby attractions like Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. Thanks Carolyn!

  • Carolyn's place was wonderful. Her helpful guide and guest passes to local wineries was incredibly helpful as well. We'll definitely stay again here in the future.

  • Our stay at Happy Hound Cottage was better than we could have ever imagined! Carolyn was the perfect host: friendly, thoughtful, and accommodating. The cottage was clean, modern, comfortable, and filled with light - and you can't beat the setting. (Where better to stay in wine country than in an actual vineyard?) We walked (!) to several awesome wineries, had the best paella I've ever eaten at the restaurant just a block away, and just generally had a fantastic, relaxing time. We loved getting to meet Tahoe, too! Thanks for everything, Carolyn!

  • My husband and I had a WONDERFUL beginning to our honeymoon at the Happy Hound Cottage. We got there pretty late, but our host Carolyn left the lights on, a bottle of champagne in the fridge, and some strawberries and chocolate out on the counter as a welcome. The cottage is beautifully appointed - very clean, comfortable bed with luxurious linens, fantastic shower, and a great little kitchenette where we could prepare coffee (provided by our fantastic host Carolyn) and breakfast that we bought at the store. Each morning we woke up, we were greeted by the view out the front door of an acre of Merlot vines. We met Carolyn while she was tending her garden the first morning we were there, and although she was leaving soon for work, she took the time to have a nice conversation with us and tell us a bit about the area. It really was the perfect place for us to recoup after the wedding. It also is in a great location to explore both the Sonoma and Napa valleys, if you don't mind driving a bit to Napa (we love driving). We can't wait to get back to HHC soon to keep the honeymoon going. Many thanks to Carolyn for a truly wonderful 3 nights at HHC.

  • The Happy Hound Vineyard cottage is exactly as advertised! A sweet little cottage with plenty of space for two. Clean, airy and bright (maybe too bright in the morning - bring a sleep mask!) with a small patio area where you can enjoy your morning coffee with a vineyard view. Carolyn was quick to reply to emails and questions and great about accommodating our late arrival. We were surprised to discover some lovely welcome items - a bowl of fresh strawberries, eggs, milk and a bottle of wine! There was also a small stash of toiletry items in the bathroom which came in handy.

The cottage does not have air conditioning which was actually fine on all days except for the day it hit 105 degrees. Even on that day though, with the windows open and the ceiling fan on, the cottage cooled down enough to sleep well.

  • We fell in love with Sonoma County on this trip, our first to the area, and a huge part of our being so smitten was the Happy Hound Vineyard Cottage! It's bright, airy, clean, comfortable, welcoming, and - yes - happy. The location is terrific - serene and close to nature (grapevines are planted just feet from the front door), yet very close to the main road and centrally located. Carolyn is warm and lovely, and her dog, Tahoe (the happy hound herself) is friendly and a perfect canine host, and the welcome bottle of wine, plus coffee and milk were really nice touches. We loved it and we didn't want to leave!

  • We loved our stay in the Happy Hound Vineyard Cottage! Tastefully decorated, clean and inviting! We also enjoyed the vineyard views.
Carolyn is a great host. Though we didn't get to meet her in person, she welcomed us with complimentary wine!

We would love to be back to stay in her cottage and explore more of what the area has to offer.

  • The Happy Hound Cottage was absolutely perfect! Carolyn had the cottage perfect for our arrival including coffee and breakfast items for the morning as well as snacks and fruit. The fresh flowers from the garden on the table were a perfect touch! We also looked forward to the welcome from Tahoe each day. We will definitely recommend the Happy Hound to our friends and family, anyone for that matter! If we have the opportunity, we will definitely return!

About
After nearly two decades of living in the East Bay (Oakland), I realized a long held passion for the beauty, scale and easy pace of Sonoma Valley by moving to Kenwood. Happy Hound Cottage is named for my sweet lab/terrier mix, Tahoe. I was born and raised in Southern California near Pasadena. I have degrees in Theology and Environmental Psychology and work at MIG, Inc. (planning, design and communications) as a Principal and Chief Operating Officer. While I commute from Berkeley on a near regular basis, I find it well worth the trip, enjoying the beauty of the valley and views of horses, cows, sheep, chickens, oak groves and vineyards. I love each season: winter with its striking dark barks and green hills; spring as the grape buds break; summer when the vines are so vital; and fall as the landscape turns so colorful and—of course—harvest! I enjoy fresh, local food and sharing good wine. I love visiting with my warm and kind friends, walking the vineyard and tending to the gardens (vegetables and flowers). I also enjoy sharing our love of Sonoma Valley with others. I belong to several wine clubs and would be happy to extend guest passes to you, as well as provide suggestions to the many other Valley wineries, tasting rooms, restaurants, markets, shopping opportunities and recreational activities. I'll be sure to help make your stay at HHC one you'll want to experience over and over. Cheers!
