About this listing
Picture yourselves at Happy Hound Cottage 20 feet from my vineyard, in perfect privacy with a stunning view of Sugarloaf Mountain. Clean, contemporary space with fireplace, sliding doors to patio & vineyard. Walk to 14 wineries, bike to State park. Relaxing, fun, beautiful, sweet, romantic and memorable.
Happy Hound Cottage is named for my dog, Tahoe—who will happily greet you on arrival and possibly say good night and/or good morning (or not, if you otherwise prefer). HHC is in the heart of Sonoma County wine country (Kenwood), midway between the town of Sonoma and the city of Santa Rosa. Our central location is convenient for local excursions as well as day trips inland and to the coast.
I belong to several Sonoma Valley wine clubs and would be happy to extend guest passes to you. In addition to the many, many wineries and tasting rooms in Sonoma Valley, there are at least 12 within a short walking distance of HHC. Also, I can recommend many restaurants, markets, shopping opportunities and recreational activities.
HHC is situated at the northeast portion of our two-acre property and is essentially surrounded by vineyards. It is a newly constructed, contemporary and quiet, detached studio cottage—completely out of sight from my house and all surrounding homes. It has a gas fireplace for warmth and ambiance and a ceiling fan for comfort during the hotter weather.
HHC has a kitchen, a five-burner gas range, under counter refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave. The HDTV and DVD are viewable from anywhere in the cottage, as well as Wi-Fi service. Both the sleeping and seating areas look through an expansive sliding glass door, onto a private patio, my Merlot vineyard (steps away) and Sugarloaf Mountain (prominently in view). There is a gas-to-charcoal Weber grill just off the patio,
Enjoy our complimentary “welcome” wine for your first night.
The two-acre property includes a one acre (Merlot) vineyard, our house, a detached garage and HHC. A gazebo is nestled in the front garden with views to Hood Mountain and Sugarloaf Mountain (please enjoy!). There is a “you cannot miss it” heritage Valley Oak in our front yard and a majestic Walnut tree at the back edge of the vineyard.
Raised-beds, organic vegetable and flower gardens are within limited eye shot of the cottage patio (please feel free to wander over and look). Enjoy a stroll through the vineyard, especially fun during bud break in spring, and color change (veraison) and ripening in summer and harvest in fall. Your stroll can continue through surrounding vineyards and through one of the largest Lavender farms in the county.
Sorry, but absolutely no smoking on the property. Thank you in advance for understanding.

Do you want a Sommelier and Certified Wine Specialist to take you to boutique wineries, typically “off the beaten track?” My friend is available for a private tour of up to four wineries. The tour will be individualized to meet your taste and preferences and sense of adventure. (Fee negotiable).

We had a quick stay here, but it was nice. The place was very clean and there was lots of good info about things to do in the neighborhood. It's very close (walkable) to a small market and a few other restaurants and tasting rooms. There's actually a bus that runs down the road nearby that would be a good way to get around if you didn't feel like driving. We found this area very quiet, but convenient to a lot of places in the valley. Definitely a great place to stay to get away from things for a few days.
Staying here was great. The place was completely as described, clean, spacious, and quiet. And had a great view, with easy access to most everything we wanted while staying there. Carolyn was also very helpful with suggestions on what to check out during our stay as didn't go with much of a plan.
From the moment we made contact with Carolyn the experience was as anticipated … wonderful! Through our communication she made us feel welcome and special. The cottage was exactly as described and perfect for our needs. Centrally located in the Sonoma Valley allowing day trips to Healsburg, Armstrong Reserve, Bodega Bay, Jack London's State Park, Sonoma and some of the best wine tasting we have ever had. Carolyn's recommendations for wine tasting were spot on as were previous travelers' reviews recommending Harold at the walking tours in Healsburg. Even being at the cottage enjoying sunrises and sunsets, walking the vineyards and consulting with Tahoe and Chortle and Little Kitty were special times. The wine that welcomed us was terrific!
Carolyn, your guest home was just what we needed last weekend. There was beautiful weather, quiet time, quality time, great wine and great food. Not to mention a picturesque view just outside our door. We saw the blue moon on Friday evening on a clear night and was greated by your very pretty cat. Thank you for a great spot and would definitely stay with you guys again if we're back to visit.
Our stay at Happy Hound Cottage in Sonoma Valley made for a wonderful, memorable first trip to wine country. My husband and I knew from the pictures and property description that the cottage was surrounded by nature but nothing compares to being there and seeing it in person. We enjoyed a view of Carolyn's vineyard and the mountains all around us. We spent some time out in the patio, had dinner and wine, and breathed in the cool, crisp air. The location was also perfect for stargazing at night. The cottage was in close proximity to the places we visited, within walking distance to many wineries, a short drive to other attractions, and even Napa was not too far of a drive. The cottage was very clean and had everything we needed and more. Being able to bring our dog with us was a huge plus. Carolyn was a gracious host, very friendly, and helpful, from the time we booked to the time we checked out. We highly recommend Happy Hound Cottage!
My wife and I stayed at Happy Hound Vineyard Cottage during our one year wedding anniversary trip to wine country and we were very pleased. The cottage is a perfect size and has everything you need for your stay, not to mention a beautiful vineyard view.
The cottage itself is very clean, a perfect size for two people, and the surrounding area is filled with beautiful views and plenty of peace and quiet. My wife and I had easy access to both Sonoma and Napa Valley wineries given the cottage location.
Overall, we would recommend for any couples looking for a quick getaway wine country. Specifically those looking for beautiful views and away from high traffic tourist areas.
We loved this place. It is as described in a beautiful setting and a great location to explore Sonoma and surrounds.
Carolyn was a lovely host.
We had issues with Internet not working for much of the time but this didn't matter too much for us.
About the Host, Carolyn
After nearly two decades of living in the East Bay (Oakland), I realized a long held passion for the beauty, scale and easy pace of Sonoma Valley by moving to Kenwood.
Happy Hound Cottage is named for my sweet lab/terrier mix, Tahoe.
I was born and raised in Southern California near Pasadena. I have degrees in Theology and Environmental Psychology and work at MIG, Inc. (planning, design and communications) as a Principal and Chief Operating Officer. While I commute from Berkeley on a near regular basis, I find it well worth the trip, enjoying the beauty of the valley and views of horses, cows, sheep, chickens, oak groves and vineyards. I love each season: winter with its striking dark barks and green hills; spring as the grape buds break; summer when the vines are so vital; and fall as the landscape turns so colorful and—of course—harvest!
I enjoy fresh, local food and sharing good wine. I love visiting with my warm and kind friends, walking the vineyard and tending to the gardens (vegetables and flowers). I also enjoy sharing our love of Sonoma Valley with others.
I belong to several wine clubs and would be happy to extend guest passes to you, as well as provide suggestions to the many other Valley wineries, tasting rooms, restaurants, markets, shopping opportunities and recreational activities.
I'll be sure to help make your stay at HHC one you'll want to experience over and over. Cheers!
