Luigi was an excellent host and his house was simply beautiful, just as we expected it. It has everything you need, we cooked dinner one night and found all we needed in the kitchen. Luigi had left us stuff in the fridge so that we could make breakfast every morning. The house was very clean and tidy. Luigi greeted us with a loaf of bread from Matera and gave us loads of precious tips on moving around town, places to eat, to buy food, all we needed. The house is in an absolutely amazing position, the best ever. Right in the middle of the sassi, you can walk everywhere from there. there's a very special view from the house. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to visit Matera.
We had the most wonderful time, and it was a real privilege staying in the Sassi - the history and culture of this location is inspiring. The loft apartment was practically home from home, especially after 16 nights, with the star attractions being Luigi's characterful and entertaining cats. They made our stay especially welcome, and soon made themselves very welcome in the apartment! Luigi is likewise a thoughtful and respectful host, keen to help and ensure your stay is peaceful and problem free. His restaurant recommendations were much appreciated, as was his advice to absorb the Sassi - slowly.....
The Sassi are extraordinary, and no visit can be complete without a visit to the Museo Laboratoio della Civilta Contadina (Museum Workshop of the Peasant Culture and the Ancient Trades) and I thoroughly recommend the curators book "I Racconti del Museo" (Tales from the Museum) - echoes of the past and the people who lived here.
Another beautiful location (Luigi arranged the tour for us) is the so called Crypt of Original Sin - inspiring histories and the craft of peoples past. As an artist and maker, I found it difficult to absorb all that the area had to offer, even though we stayed for 16 nights, and will definitely return.
As other visitors have mentioned, the loft apartment is something quite special, especially is an ever growing (and slightly disconcerting) rush to gentrify the area in anticipation of 2019 (my view entirely). Looking at the Sassi from the apartments' balcony, and contemplating the lives of its previous inhabitants is humbling, especially given the time frames involved. "Christ Stopped at Eboli" by Carlo Levi throws this into sharp perspective, and appropriate holiday reading.
There was so much to see and experience, and with Rufus on my lap - an experience that will remain for a long time. Many thanks Luigi for making this possible //
We had a really enoyable stay in Matera. It's quite tricky to navigate by car to the parking place near the house, but when we arrived Luigi met us just a few minutes after we messaged him. The house is very charming - it's just like the photos and description, and very clean and well equipped (although two good chairs on the terrace would be an improvement - we had to take turns to sit down!). The views from the house are stunning. There was a useful information folder which was appreciated - some good recommendations for restaurants. Despite being the height of summer and extremely hot outside the bedroom was comfortably cool enough to sleep well.
We would very highly recommend staying here - thank you.
Nicely located apartment in the main historical centre of Matera, a great base to explore the city. Lungi has been very helpful at the arrival (definitely not an easy task to navigate the million little streets) and in recommending great food experiences! Apartment is just like in the pictures, overall very comfortable.
