The Connemara Smoke House, for smoked fish, is just a stroll beyond Bunowen Pier.

Ballyconneely has two well stocked stores: Keoghs also has a restaurant and bar, McWilliams has the Post Office and coffee shop.

History and Folklore:

Horse Island is a short distance from the beach at “Ballindoon”. Folklore has it that when the
Spanish Armada sank off the west coast of Ireland the Arab horses swam to the island. They bred
with the local wild ponies, and so today the beautiful Connemara pony is recognised not only in
Ireland but far and wide. The Clifden Connemara Pony Show is an annual August event. Pony lovers
from throughout the world attend the show.

Connemara’s legendary 16th century pirate queen Grace O’Malley (Granuaile) married a local clans
man, Donall O’Flaherty, and lived in a castle by Duin Hill at Bunowen .

To the east of the castle can be seen the ruin of the chapel of St. Flannan. Another early Christian
Site in the area is an ancient Chapel dedicated to St. Caillin close to Slyne Head Lighthouse.

The Twelve Pins form the backdrop from the pier at Bunowen Bay. The highest peak is 2,400
ft and the lowest at 1,329 ft is called Diamond Hill and is situated in the Connemara National
Park. A foot path of rock work and boardwalks makes the summit of Diamond Hill accessible.
