This self contained unit is attached to the main house but has separate entrance and facilities. It is an architect designed space with a central atrium area as kitchen/dining room partly open to the sun with greenery. It has a lounge, central kitchen/dining/work area with a double bedroom and full bathroom and the possibility of a 2nd double bedroom but not very suitable for children as we have dogs. The bedroom leads onto the garden and pool area in a tropical setting. Guests are welcome to use the garden for braais and sundowners. The house is tastefully decorated with the owner's art collection. The white linen is changed and the apartment cleaned weekly. The location is a 5 min walk to the Musgrave shopping mall and 10 mins by car to the beach or to the Conference Centre. There is a lively Sat morning craft market in the neighbourhood part and many restaurants that are walking distance away. Free wi-fi and TV and dvd player.
A tropical haven in a quiet and safe suburban area.
Broadband Wireless internet access available.

From the moment we arrived we loved our experience! Very homely loved all the little thing Carol and Keith do in the cottage! Just wished we could of stayed longer. Brilliant location lots of shops and restaurants near by. Always felt very safe and we loved all the art work in the cottage!
Carol and Keith's cottage is a wonderful place to stay while visiting Durban! The location is ideal and the cottage contains everything you need to make your stay enjoyable. I will definitely be contacting Carol when I return to Durban. Can't recommend this place highly enough.
I stayed with Carol for 4 nights and it was a terrific spot for me--in a great location, and easy to get around on my own. The cottages are both charming, very comfortable and thoughtfully arranged. My hosts were delightful and very helpful, including arranging transport from the airport, and providing great advise about logistics and things to do. I will definitely stay there again if I come back to Durban.
Me and my friend had wonderful time here. The cottage is spacious, cosy and located in a nice neighbourhood close to restaurants and a shopping center. Carol and his husband were absolutely great and helpful hosts. Highly recommended!
I just want to say a big thank you to Carol and Keith for the wonderful time we had at their establishment. They have a beautiful and comfortable place for people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, its quiet and peaceful. Carol and Keith are great host and very friendly and Keith knows the area like the back of his hand, he was my GPS the whole time I was there.
Thank you very much, I will go back again and tell everyone about them and their place.
Very good experience at Carol's and Keith'. They are very helpful and the apartment is very big with everything you need. The location is ideal as the musgrave center is just around the corner and the bus station also.
This is a perfect place for long stays with great prices!
We recommend it!
We had a great two week stay at Carol's cottage in Musgrave, Durban. We've spent significant time in Durban before, so we chose her place because it fit all of our criteria: nice neighborhood, walking distance to many amenities (grocery, mobile phone store, movie theater, and much more at the Musgrave Mall), easy access to highways, and equidistant between the UKZN Howard Campus and the Morningside area to the north. If your stay in Durban involves more than just the beachfront, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more convenient location. Check out the "Essenwood Market" on Saturday mornings, just down the street (Steven Dlamini, formerly Essenwood).
Carol is wonderful, and the place is fantastic: spacious, with quite a bit of natural light (especially in the kitchen area, which is where we spent quite a bit of time). Easy, secure parking and pool were major pluses, too. Our stay was in winter (June/July), and we were provided with a small space heater, but found no need to use it if we closed the door separating the kitchen from the sleeping area. The self-catering kitchen was just what we needed for two guests: wine glasses, opener, mugs, electric kettle, microwave, mini-fridge, large (by South African standards) oven/range, etc.
Only (very minor) caveats: there are two very friendly dogs who are in the main house. They're lovely and well-behaved, but do bark at arrivals to the house. The sound is mostly muted by walls/doors, but is noticeable. If you are especially sensitive to noise and/or sleep exceptionally early or late, this may be an issue. We, on the other hand, loved the feeling of company and the added security of our canine guards. Also, backing out of the secure parking onto the one-way street can be a bit tricky, especially with a larger vehicle: the good news is that there is relatively low traffic.
As the rating indicates, we'd very happily stay at Carol's on our next stopover in Durban. For the price and location, it can't be beat; hopefully more excellent self-contained cottages in Durban will be joining the AirBnB community.

I am an art curator working in South Africa and internationally. My husband Keith and I enjoy hosting people and therefore find airbnb a great occupation. We have a house which is over a hundred years old which we have modernized over the years. The self catering apartments are all in our tropical garden and guests enjoy the peace and calm whilst being close to the city. We have always and still travel extensively with Paris being a favorite destination. We also collect art which enhances our environment.
