Rodney and Lynn are beloved hosts
Guests consistently praise Rodney and Lynn by name for warm hospitality and the optional farm tour.
Relax at this peaceful farm while looking from the backyard at the South Mountains. The renovated house is decorated throughout with family quilts, and antiques. Relax on the deck leading from the master bedroom or the back patio and enjoy the view. Visit the restored homestead on a guided tour where the hosts will tell you of the restoration project, ongoing. The farm produces award winning sorghum syrup and stone-ground cornmeal and grits. Follow us at FB Willis Farms Belwood.
The space
The farmhouse was originally constructed as part of a dairy with farm activities occurring across the road. You can still see remnants of the barn, out buildings, and tall silo. As with many small dairies it closed in 1979. When originally constructed the house had no indoor toilet. Things have changed, we now have two, count'm two indoor toilets. Man, that is special. The entire house has been renovated with modern amenities including central AC and Heat. The house is one level with only two short steps to reach the main floor from the parking area. There is a large backyard, about 2 acres, which is bordered by a pasture on 3 sides. One corner is used to grow heirloom variety corn which we harvest in the fall to make our stone ground cornmeal and grits. If you desire, you can contact the hosts to arrange for a guided tour of the restored 150-year-old hand hewn log house, barn and carriage shed overlooking the catfish pond only a short walk away. The homestead has been furnished with period furnishings.
I would encourage anyone that is interested in the outdoors to visit South Mountain State Park only a 20 min. drive from the farm. There are hiking and mountain biking trails, waterfalls, picnic areas for families or groups and equestrian facilities.
We are located about 20 miles north of Shelby, NC and about 25 miles south of Hickory, NC. From the larger cites, Charlotte and Ashville we are approximately halfway between them or a little more than an hours drive. Interstate 85 is 22 miles to south near Kings Mountain and Interstate 40 is 20 miles to the north near Hickory, NC. From the Tryon International Equestrian Center we are a 50 min. drive.
Guest access
The house and yard can be accessed by the guests as they desire. Parking is immediately adjacent to the farmhouse.
Other things to note
The hosts live just two stone throws away from the farmhouse, down the hill. Their house is mostly hidden by the outbuildings and barn.
There are several restaurants and grills less than 10-mile drive from the farm. A local supermarket is located 9 miles north on Hwy 10 and Ingles supermarket in Shelby 13 miles south on Hwy18. A Dollar General is located in Fallston to the south and Casar to the west, both about 10 min drive from farm.

My work: Retired to Farming
Lives in Belwood, North Carolina
Retired after 40 years as a project and environmental engineer of a lithium manufacturing plant. Continue to be active, working on our farm producing sorghum syrup (aka molasses) and heirloom cornmeal and grits which we raise and grind here on our farm. We enjoy using heritage equipment and incorporating our draft horses when we can. Our family has moved log by log and rock by rock old hewn log structures which include two log houses, log barn and a carriage house. Our main language is English with southern drawl. In addition to farming, I am currently the mayor of the town of Belwood where I have lived since 1979.
