First floor flat in the suburb of Santa Catalina, recently refurbished preserving the traditional vintage-type style. With three double bedrooms, one bathroom, kitchen and balcony, it has several charming features, such as the well or the outdoor patio, in typical Majorcan style. Also on the walls you will find exhibitions of young artists from the Island! (Actually six shots of the photographer Alberto Cubillo and paintings of Dario Spiegel)
The suburb of Santa Catalina forms part of the metropolis of Palma de Mallorca, standing on a hillock adjacent to the suburbs of Son Españolet and Son Armadams, being an emblematic district of the “Ciutat de Palma”, as the city is known to its inhabitants. It has a well-known market called “Mercat de Santa Catalina”, which as yet conserves the flavour of the old traditional markets, and where you can buy typical Mallorcan country produce.
Historically, it was a neighbourhood of fishermen, due to its proximity to the sea, and one can still see the typical one and two storey houses, with their characteristic balconies and their façades with Mallorcan shutters. Some have a small garden, which reminds us of how the suburb used to be in the not very far-off past; Santa Catalina conserves the local style of low-rise houses and quiet streets.
The district has its origins in the settlement of “El Jonquet”, so called because of an area of reed-beds, which grew in abundance, being near to the sea. This original settlement was populated by fishermen, followed by various tradesmen connected to the coastal world, such as basket-makers, and others such as millers. The windmills of “El Jonquet” and in the nearby Calle Indústria bear witness to these activities.
The suburb became rich at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, with modernist style houses, of which the “Mar y Tierra” theatre is still a living example.
The area has all the necessary services for present-day life, such as a medical centre, schools, post-office, banks and establishments which range from small, peaceful restaurants or characteristic local bars, to music-bars decorated in the latest creative tendencies.
* This is a rental apartment, that means no touristic services are provided as daily cleaning, reception or breakfast. A rental contract should be signed at your check-in time. Thank you.
Miguel was very friendly and helpful with his communication leading up to and during our stay. The house is both fairly spacious and put together in quite a quirky way which I like and provided a base for us during a half term week that we spent seeing my partner's children who live on the island. I would say that in terms of comfort levels the beds were rickety with quite uncomfortable mattresses and I found it difficult to sleep well at night. Also, as I am a light sleeper and the walls in these old houses in Santa Catalina are quite thin, the fact that the neighbours were very helpful and friendly but had their TV switched on and pretty loud from about 6 am very day until midnight or after most nights meant that by the end of the week I felt exhausted due to extremely disturbed sleep from both noise and the uncomfortable beds.
The kitchen lacks some basic things which would greatly improve it if they were added - both my partner and I are keen cooks which is one of the reasons why we prefer to stay in self catering accommodation. I would advise Miguel that he should buy a kettle and some sharp knives as well as a couple of extra saucepans if he wishes to improve the experience of any guests staying more than a night or two.
I would recommend Miguel as a host due to his polite communication and the house certainly has character but I would say that if you are used to a few creature comforts in the places that you stay, you may want to consider pushing your budget a little and renting somewhere a little more luxurious.
The first thing you have to know is that Ellyssa is a very demanding guest. Thanks for the recommendations and also for the criticism. With respect to the mattresses, is the first time someone complains, I feel that the mattresses were not to their liking.
It is true that the houses in Santa Catalina are old and the walls are thin, Santa Catalina is a traditional neighborhood and humble, but also modern. It is true that neighbors sometimes have the TV at high volume, they are very old and have some hearing problems, but says Ellyssa as they are very kind and sympathetic and you can tell them with confidence "please you can download the volume ", as did other guests. Thanks for the recommendations of the kitchen, I will try to put more accessories.
Well, finally, as Ellyssa says, if you're accustomed to certain comforts and want to find more luxury, this is not your place or your neighborhood. You spend more money and look for another place.
Thank you for 4 wonderful days in Palma, we enjoyed every day! The apartement was nice, big and spacious and in a very nice location. We made several meals and also went out to find nice restaurants in the neighbourhood. Miguel tipped us on several places, we loved swimming in Illetas, easy to get to with bus number 3. And we also visited Cala Deia when leaving Palma, that was fantastic! We will definately come back if we return to Palma.
La casa es estupenda, arreglada y limpisima y el anfitrion majisimo. El barrio nos ha encantado y es muy centrico. Repetiremos
We had an amazing time!!! The apartment is perfect for the kind of vacations that we were looking for. The city center is only 10 min walking, and it is very well connected through buses to the main beaches. We rented a car with the help of Dario, Miguel's friend that works in a rent car and were able to park under our terrace. What to say? We met all the lovely neighbors and had a great time in the Italian restaurant of the corner. I guess we were very lucky to have such a wonderful place for ourselves!!
The flat was in perfect condition, spacious, well equipped and very clean. Nicely located with bars, restaurants, and supermarkets within walking distance. Miguel greeted us when we arrived, and was extremely helpful, providing local knowledge which enhanced our experience in the island. He even let us use his private parking space (for a small fee) for our rented car, which was great. I would totally recommend this property and will definitely be back!
Nice and comfortable apartment in a nice neighborhood close to the center. The access to the small terrace was an extra plus, and Miguel was a helpful and welcoming host. We enjoyed our stay in Palma, and would not hesitate to go back to Miguels place. Thank you!
Although I did not meet Miguel, he was always in close contact with me. Whenever we had a question, he provided us with answers. The house has everything you need to enjoy your stay in Palma. From kitchen stuff to towels, it is all there. In general, it is very clean and well maintained. There are 3 bedrooms to be used, but since there were 4 of us we did not get to use the third bedroom. We also got to use a washing machine, iron, and garage which as you can imagine was really useful. The apartment is equipped with the AC, and WiFi. All in all we had a very pleasant stay in Palma and I would highly recommend Miguel and his apartment.
