About this listing
A modestly restored miners cottage on the fringe of the Mt Pilot National Park, The Baker's Cottage is within easy reach of Beechworth, Milawa and Rutherglen. A great spot to explore rich history within a unique landscape. Close to five wine regions.
My home is situated close to several well known Wine Regions and the Victorian Alps. A short drive to Beechworth, Milawa and Wangaratta, we're right in the centre of it all in Eldorado. It’s an original, modestly restored Miner’s cottage from the Gold Rush era.
There are two queen size bedrooms with soft comfy mattresses, includes all linen. There are two sitting/lounge rooms, one with an open fire. The cottage has one bathroom (with bathtub), separate shower. There are two toilets. A modern kitchen which features a wood-fired stove. Enjoy log fires in the winter, air-conditioning in the summer and lazy days on the verandah.
All within easy stroll of the local Tavern and General Store. Find out how to pan for gold in the creek just like the prospectors have done for over 100 years.
The property is also home to an original early 1900’s brick Bakery complete with its still-in-working-order Scotch Oven.
Send me a quick message to double check availability before you book or if you have any questions or requests.
There are walks along the creek within minutes from home: see native wildlife; enjoy a stroll across the Swing Bridge; visit the Gold Dredge and the Eldorado Museum. Bring your bike and ride the Rail Trails to Beechworth, Bright or Wangaratta. Enjoy the peace and tranquility as well as our small community’s country hospitality. Closest large town 15 mins by car; closest Rail Trail Station 5 mins by car; closest Winery 10 mins by car. I am happy, when possible, to pick you up from either the train station or Albury or Wangaratta airport if you are coming without a car.
Guests are welcome to use the laundry facilities and second toilet, however this is a shared space.
Interaction with Guests
If I am home, I am happy to greet and converse with my guests and they are welcome to seek out my company for all the news and local knowledge about the region. However, I am equally happy if hibernation is the aim of the stay, I totally get the need for space. Guests have complete privacy in separate accommodation accept for the laundry, which is on the very rear of the cottage. There is a privacy lock on the inside laundry door for your convenience.
My neighbours are quiet and friendly. Eldorado is a village that reminds you of how things used to be, before convenience stores, open all hours trade and endless distractions and hype were the norm. It is a place where you can forget the time, allow conversation and wine to flow, enjoy long walks, reading, painting, drawing, photography and lazing in the sun to fill the void.
There are trains from Sydney and Melbourne, I am happy to make arrangements to pick guests up from the station to stay, however once out in Eldorado, you will either need a bike or a hire car, feel free to ask about what you need, I am very happy to help.
Other Things to Note
Please note. If you are coming as a couple and want to use the second room there will be a surcharge for linen.
I like to keep things tidy and clean.
It is a strictly non smoking house. Please find the butt tin out side for your convenience.
I don't keep animals as I am away too often to manage their happiness.
The water comes from the original town well. There is plenty of water for showers and even a bath. There is tank water for drinking.
The hot water uses bottles gas to heat. If in the event it runs out, please ask for assistance to switch over the gas bottle.
I have great neighbours who are also quiet and friendly. Please remember quietly respect my neighbours with no noise after 10pm.
A simple breakfast is available, you may use the facilities such as the stove, refrigerator and oven to prepare your meals if you desire. Please leave the kitchen as you find it.
The local tavern is open for meals 4 days, Wednesday - Sunday. For a small cost and if available, I am happy to drive you to any of the great restaurants or wineries in the area for dinner and lunches if I am home and available.
Towels and bed linen is included.
You will have the house to yourself as I have separate sleeping quarters, however I do share the laundry which is located at the back of the cottages and does not require entering the cottage while you visit.
While you are welcome to view and enjoy the bake house itself, please do not light a fire in the oven. It is a bit of an operation to get it going, besides smoking yourselves out, it will take three days to become a useful oven for heating or making meals. (Feel free to ask about having the oven prepared for you for a feast.)
Sandy was great getting in touch with us and making sure the cottage was warm when we arrived. Such a pity we missed meeting as we took too long eating and sipping wine on the way and Sandy had to leave before we got to Eldorado. Great place to stay and unwind.
My wife and I recently had a very lovely, relaxed weekend away at the Baker's Cottage in Eldorado. Our host, Sandy, was extremely welcoming and ensured we had a beautiful stay.
Cozy couch, cozy fire and a very cozy bed!
It felt like a home away from home. Thank you Sandy for having us.
Wow, what a beautiful couple of nights away! We really didn't want to leave... Sandy was such a welcoming and lovely host, she really went that extra step...fresh eggs, butter, milk and bread and a few other yummy goodies left for us as well as beautiful freshly picked white roses in vases throughout the cottage. Bright and beautiful white towels and linen on beds...and the beds, oh my goodness, seriously comfortable. Lots of heating through house and stayed perfectly cosy by the beautiful open fireplace with a cuppa and book in the morning and game of chess in the evening! We went for a beautiful walk and it was so fascinating learning of the history of the town with gold mining and Ned Kelly etc (we had no idea before coming!). Being from northern NSW, we don't get down here ever, however really hope we will visit again one day. Thank you Sandy, it was a beautiful experience staying in your perfectly furnished historic cottage!
The Bakers cottage is the perfect place to escape for the weekend. The weather outside was wet and cold but inside was warm and delightful. The cottage is well stocked and has everything needed for a relaxing time. Well located within a short drive to great local wine and food areas (Beechworth, Milawa etc). Sandy was an excellent host, accommodating and helpful with information. Highly recommended!
This is our second visit to The Baker's Cottage, we brought friends in tow with the knowledge they would have a similarly restful time. Sandy's home is perfectly designed, with gorgeous touches in all rooms, extremely comfortable beds and a location leading you to a bounty of food and wine. We wouldn't hesitate staying at Baker's again and love the cosy, quiet atmosphere of the town and Sandy's home.
I'm so glad you feel at home when you stay Lauren and happy that you didn't oversell it to your friends ha ha! Love to have you back when you're in the mood for a break from the big smoke. You know more about the bike paths than us locals... thanks for your kind words, Sandy x
We really enjoyed our time at The Baker's cottage. We were greeted warmly by Sandy on our arrival and were shown around. Beds were warm and comfy and Eldorado was a very central location from which to explore the area. We were able to walk to the local tavern for a delicious meal and also able to cater for ourselves at the cottage.
If you're after a comfortable, very well equipped retreat in a charming small town near both Beechworth and Wangaratta then this is the place for you. Sandy is a very hospitable host with a great knowledge of the local area. Our stay couldn't have been better.
About the Host, Sandy
My biggest passions lay in and around creativity, friends and family.
Recently finishing up my wine tour business I am now focused on enjoying working with micro business owners to help them grow, develop and shape the business to it's fullest potential in line with their hearts most passionate vision and desires.
I have a passion for photography. I am by no means a professional, however I love where the camera can take me, a place of solitude and peace. I do feel I could not live without a camera now. Photography gave me renewed energy and perspective on life. It taught me to slow down to open my eyes and to look for life in it's purest form. I love to focus on what's directly in front of me and what is most important to me and that is life, family and friends.
I have spent the last three years improving my cottage with some modest renovations and a little gardening. Still a little way to go, but that's half the fun. I have lots of little projects on the go.
I enjoy coming home to Eldorado, it is such a restful place to be.
Well within 1 hours drive from Eldorado there are five wine regions with local produce and wines, giving us room for great fun days out.
I have had a second chance at life and cherish every moment, I urge everyone to live it to the fullest, because you never know when your time is up.
I like to make a difference to those around me, it is the little things in the end that can make the biggest difference. Like a smile or a hug, a good laugh and even a cup of tea and a good read.
