The Space

NOTE CHANGE: Because my home is in a residential neighborhood the City of Ashland is concerned about transient usage codes for my hosting at this time. The City Council will make a decision in April or May. Until this changes, I can only accept guests staying for 30 days or more.

Do contact me. Tell me about yourself and your needs for being in Ashland at this time. Unfortunately since I have a Service Dog who works for me 24/7, I can not accept guest pets.

RUTH'S QUIET RETREAT is a very comfortable, serene, uncluttered home on a residential quiet street. Restful and easy is my intent for your stay.

I'm an artist and writer; so the house speaks art, creativity and calm. I want your time here to feel like home away from home for you, that you are welcomed like cherished family, ease. The white Standard Poodle in the photo is my Service Dog, Handsome Dude, and is the first to greet you into our household.

HOME AND GARDEN
My home rests on a 1/3rd acre full of beautiful trees -- tulip, dogwood, elm, Japanese maple, cherry, Douglas fir -- and lilac, forsythia and lavender. In the large back yard, you will find a quiet lovely spiral urban meditation garden for moments of peace after your traveling to sit sheltered with magnificent sequoias. A slate bench in the center, white wicker chairs to put where you please around a lawn and a chaise longe for more perfect resting in shade or sun.

YOUR SPACE
Your bedroom is a library nearby a spacious living room. There is a full comfortable bed, spiffy clean linens with a Sleep Better Memory Topper over a futon, quite soft on the body but toward firm -- for one or two people. Soft pillows and two different neck rests.Organic towels. A leather rest for your bag and a closet to hang clothes. A marble shared full bath is near-by your room and a half bath at the other end of the house.

WHAT ELSE IS AVAILABLE
The living room and garden are always available to you for resting, reading and meditation.
There is WiFi and Coffee /Tea are always available. But unfortunately not other kitchen privileges. I make a Light Breakfast for those who desire: croissants, honey, butter, yogurt, my great filtered coffee and an assortment of quality teas....( for short term guests)

  • Our overnight stay with Ruth and her companion dog HD (Handsome Dude) was lovely and as advertised, a true "Quiet Retreat". HD was a true "Prince-of-a-fellow" in the finest Shakespearian tradition.

After a quick drop-off of our overnight kit, we slipped into town, less that a couple of miles, and had a quiet dinner at a lovely little restaurant that Ashland is famous for. Additionally, the holiday lighting on the main street and houses was spectacular.

Returning early after a long day's drive, we slipped under the covers in the comfortable, well-lit book-filled guest room for some relaxing evening reading. Later, when I awoke sometime near midnight, it was such a treat to lay in bed gazing out to the sky and watching the Big Dipper as it rotated behind the leafy screen of two immense Douglas Fir trees at the back of the property.

The next morning after a delicious pot of French Press coffee, yogurt and a warm croissant, a viewing of the back yard revealed DF trees that had to have been at least four feet in diameter.

Chatting with Ruth was most interesting and we would have tarried longer but because of car issued discovered the evening before, we opted to depart as early as possible so as to drive at a slower speed on our way home. She was so understanding on this issue and promised good thoughts on our trip home.

Ruth's home was comfortable with well appointed graphic artwork and ceramics and her hostessing faultless. Thank you both!

  • Staying at Ruth's was like staying with family. I felt right at home. Conveniently located, it is just minutes away from most Ashland attractions. Ruth is warm, welcoming and easy. Her dog, Handsome Dude is a magical addition to the stay. He is well behaved and adds a special touch to the experience.
The bed is super comfy and is in a book filled room. The weather was unusually cold and snowy while I was in Ashland and Ruth had a warm fire welcoming me when I awoke to her tea and fresh baked goods. It was the perfect stay!

  • Ruth's place was bright and full of art and books - two things that make me feel right at home. She was communicative beforehand, welcomed me on arrival, then set me free for the night to explore Ashland. Bedroom and bed were warm and comfortable. In the morning, Ruth and I talked over breakfast, and I truly enjoyed getting a window into her life - she's a remarkable, intelligent & courageous woman. Would love to stay again.

  • Ruth graciously welcomed me despite the late arrival time. I was given a quick tour, introduced to her wonderful service dog, and then fell into bed for a deep and restful sleep on her guest futon bed. We talked for quite a while the next morning discovering many points of connection including having attended the same quirky college in Ohio! Ruth has such wisdom about the world and you will certainly enjoy your stay with her!

  • Ruth is very kind, she thinks of everything! Her dog is amazingly sweet, she is friendly, yet not overwhelming and appeared to not mind the coming and goings of a 26 year old vacationer who is in and out at all hours. She is very quiet, naps were easily taken and the bed is comfortable (it is a futon). The room is not huge but is more than enough and the bathroom is also very cute! Thank you again so much for a wonderful stay and I hope to see you again this winter!

  • I had a great stay with Ruth during my roadtrip through the Pacific Northwest. Her home is lovely--clean, restful and full of interesting art. My brother and I enjoyed having breakfast with her and getting to know her story. Thanks Ruth!

  • What do you want while traveling? A good night's sleep. And that's what you get at Ruth's Quiet Retreat. We slept so soundly.

The house is located conveniently to downtown Ashland, indeed just five minutes' drive away.

The breakfast was a nice offering of local baked goods, yogurt, and great dark coffee. How nice to be able to eat in and not have another meal to think about while on the road.

A bonus to staying in someone's home is the exchange of ideas and experiences. Ruth is interesting and wise from her life's path. Probably through these kind of exchanges, we get to make the world a little bit better.

  • Ruth is warm, energetic and knows how to make her guests feel comfortable. She was flexible when we accidentally arrived a bit later than expected! Breakfast was very tasty and Ruth has an incredible story. Thank you Ruth!!!!

  • Our stay in Ashland was enhanced because we chose to stay at Ruth's Quiet Retreat! We thoroughly enjoyed Ruth, so much that it was difficult remembering what we had come to Ashland for, other than to just visit with this remarkable and interesting lady. Handsome dude was a sweet addition to our stay. Very loving and sweet dog.
Terra Street is a quiet, shady street not far from town, but far enough away to have the privacy and solitude that is nice.

  • I hope to visit Ruth again! I was traveling 12+ hours the evening I stayed with Ruth; she was flexible and accommodating with my late arrival and timeline changes. (as its not always easy to predict arrival time on a long journey) I always felt comfortable and at home. Even getting in rather late Ruth still made me tea when I arrived and ensured I had everything I needed. Breakfast just as she promised in the morning. What a treat! I felt like an honored guest; thank you Ruth!

About
I'm an artist and writer -- incidentaly a semi-retired psychologist. Beauty of spirit is what I do. Beauty in my home and land is very important to me. So I want your stay with me to be restful and peaceful in that way. I am extremely happy to say that my memoir WITHOUT UTTERANCE: Tales from the Other Side of Language, has JUST been published this fall. It is an inner story about losing language, where everything is language, about moving through chaos and terrible losses, about finding non-word languages that vastly enriched my life. They balanced my life as I moved once more into articulate language. You can look at it in your local bookstore, and also on line. I am very proud of it. A good read for mystery, surprise and, incidentally, transformation.
