Historic Bywater Victorian Double

Apartment - Entire home/apt · N Rampart St, New Orleans, LA 70117, United States

The Space

If you are looking to get away from the tourist end of New Orleans, be my guest and live like a local. Come stay in my 100+ year old Victorian Double style home in the Bywater.

This is half a double, so it includes everything you will need. It is a self contained and open, airy space with a living room, full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and laundry.

Guest Access

There are great places to eat, thrift, sip coffee, and see local theater and art within walking distance. If you need quick grocery items, the New Orleans Food Co-op and Mardi Gras Zone are just blocks away.

Great places to eat and drink are within a few minutes walking distance; Cake Cafe, Satsuma, Elizabeth's, Jim's, Maurepas Foods, Bacchanal, MImi's, Mariza, Pizza Delicious, The Joint and The Country Club (they also have a pool, but talk to me first). There are a few bars in the area that now serve food as well, which is great when you are not ready to go home but need to eat.

I have basic cable hooked up, so local news and weather is available. There is Wifi at the house and at most coffee shops. If you need to use my printer for small things I will be happy to help you out with that as well. There is private laundry inside the house, so you do not have to return home with dirty clothes. There is a fold out thick mattress futon in the living room if there is an additional guest (price will apply). Prices will be affected by festivals like Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest and the weekly rate dos NOT apply during these festival times.

There are 2 bikes available for rent while you are here - it is $25 per bike for your entire stay. They are male and female cruisers, nothing fancy and come with 2 u-locks and bike lights.

Interaction with Guests

The apartment is self contained and I leave it up to you to decide how much we talk. I don't want to invade your privacy and do not come into the apartment unless we arrange so.

The Neighborhood

The St. Claude Arts District hosts an art walk of the local galleries the 2nd Saturday of each month and the Shadow box Theater on St. Roch has fun, interesting, and thought provoking plays. Fringe Festival is in November and a majority of the plays/puppet shows/vaudeville takes place in the Bywater and Marigny neighborhood.

Getting around

There are two bus lines close to the house that can take you down to the French Quarter. The 5 is on Royal Street and the 55 on St. Claude Ave. There is a map on (website hidden) to plan any trip. Most people walk, since it is only 1 mile to the edge of the French Quarter and takes about 15 minutes walking.

Other Things to Note

If you are highly (I mean extreme) allergic to animals, this may not be the right house for you. While there are NO pets allowed in the apartment, there are cats that hang on the porch and I have 2 dogs. I may carry traces of dander (on me) into the apartment when I clean and I cannot guarantee a perfectly hypoallergenic environment.

Brett & I work very hard between every guest to make it as close to perfect as possible. While we want you to feel at home, please treat the apartment with respect. If you are looking for a hotel atmosphere with a maid, please do not book my place.

Check in is anytime after 3:00 p.m. and check out is at 11:00 a.m. unless special arrangements are made. If you have a later flight and need to stow your bags at my place, we can arrange that - no problem.

I have lived here for 12 years and can go on forever about the fun things to do in this city, so please ask away! I have also compiled a booklet of all the great things to do and see in the area and lots of pamphlets for swamp & plantation tours. I live on the property, so I am happy to chat, share a glass of wine on the porch, and help you enjoy your stay in New Orleans.

  • Carin Baas' unit is HUGE, spotlessly clean, QUIET, and fantastically located. She should RAISE her price. And what a sweet person. I am staying there forever whenever I come to Nawlins' !!!

  • My fiancé and I stayed at Carin's lovely home for four nights. We loved the house - it has a lot of character and is very well-stocked with virtually everything we needed throughout the stay. We enjoyed the walk to the french quarter and frenchman street and just strolling through the neighborhood. We rented a couple bikes from Carin on our last day which I'd highly recommend. Great way to see other parts of the city. Carin is a great host. The booking process was super easy and all communication was prompt. We can't wait to come back!

  • Carin's place is wonderful: clean, big, airy, and well-situated in the Bywater. Carin was a perfect host, preparing the apartment well for our stay. She was kind, thoughtful, and extremely knowledgeable about the area. It was a great stay!

  • We would highly recommend you to stay at Carin's place. We stayed during mardi gra and safe to say this town knows how to have a good time. The house is exactly what you see in the pictures she has uploaded. Very clean and had everything we needed. Carin has put a lot of work into this property and you can see that as soon as you arrive. We stayed at Carin's for three weeks and had the time of our life. Safe to say we will be returning to NOLA and will defiantly contact Carin again. Carin and Bret gave us fantastic advice on what to do in our stay in NOLA. She even has a folder of places to eat, drink, tours to do and how to get around. The location is great, we pretty much walked everywhere but there are bikes and public transport if walking isn't your thing. Carin and Bret defiantly made us feel welcome, so make sure you book with them! Thanks Carin and Bret we will see you again and next time bring some vegemite :)

  • The house was amazing! My fiance & I came down for a half-marathon, and we really enjoyed our time. The bikes were a huge plus! We were able to bike almost EVERYWHERE. However, there are so many wonderful shops within walking distance that the bikes weren't even necessary. It was cold during our stay - Carin had a few space heaters in the house that worked beautifully! The washer/dryer was a great added bonus! And the porch cats were adorable and friendly. Will stay here again !!!

  • We booked Carin's place for 3 nights, but ended up staying a fourth due to bad weather (flight cancelled for snow in New Orleans!) The apartment was just as it looked in the photos (beautiful) & very comfortable. Great mattress & duvet. Nice shower. Good kitchen set up & tons of space. Reliable WiFi.

Carin & Brett were sociable but didn't hover. I really enjoyed interacting with them both online & in person.

What made our stay was the neighbourhood: A doable walk to FQ, but very close to Frenchman (which we enjoyed more) and the charming neighbourhood places clustered around Royal, Louisa, & St. Roch in Bywater. Bikes would have been great in warmer weather. Charming neighbourhood bars & shops-- don't miss The Joint for BBQ, biscuits & gravy for breakfast at Cake Cafe, or good coffee at the Orange Couch. We saw bluegrass at Mimi's, burlesque at Siberia & stand up at HiHo. The little guidebooklet Carin had on the St Claude/St. Roch hood was invaluable. We loved living like locals in NOLA.
I have already recommended Carin to friends.

  • Gorgeous house in the lovely, quiet Bywater district away from the madness of French Quarter. Nice local bars and restaurants within walking distance. Carin's house was really clean and spacious. She was very helpful and left us a bunch of heaters and extra blankets because it was pretty chilly during our stay, Would highly recommend.

  • Carin's place is such a great place to stay and I would recommend it to anyone. My boyfriend and I rented a car which was needed most of the trip except for the days we went to French Quarter. The bikes Carin have to rent work for that and it is a short ride over. Unfortunately, we got there when one of the worst cold snaps in decades hit the area. Carin made sure we were set with heaters and blankets and we were all good! For those renting cars, street parking wasn't an issue at all which was comforting. It was our first time using AirBnb and we definitely will do it again and hope that every rental is like Carin's.

  • This place was amazing. I love New Orleans and staying here made it feel like I lived here. We were here for New Years and could not have been in a better location. Carin gave us great recommendations and was really helpful. Truly a great place to stay in New Orleans!

  • We stayed in this beautiful place for our honeymoon. When we arrived, we were enamored with the beautiful neighborhood and warmly received by Carin. The house is charming, comfortable, and fun. It's a great neighborhood. There are many restaurants and fun bars close by in Bywater, and it's very easy to explore the rest of the city from this excellent home base. I can't find anything to complain about, the whole experience was excellent from start to finish. Carin and Brett are great, the neighborhood is excellent, and the city as a whole is truly remarkable. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat, and recommend it to anyone I know. It's a great place to get to know New Orleans.

About
I am originally from Milwaukee and graduated from UWM with an Art degree. I moved to New Orleans at the end of 2000 and fell in love with the city. I worked freelance and for a contractor for almost 10 years painting furniture and interiors. I am currently working with a bike tour company that shows people a different side of New Orleans, and love suggesting places to eat, see music, and enjoy the sights. Both my boyfriend, Brett, and I enjoy relaxing on the porch at the end of the day and can share our stories of NOLA with you.
