About this listing
Stunning view from your large, sunny, quiet, 2-room suite. Privacy on your own floor of a beautifully furnished Mission District house. Walk 10 minutes to subway & ride 10 minutes downtown. Easy walk to many restaurants, bars, cafes. Free breakfast.
Enjoy a spectacular view of the highest of San Francisco's legendary hills from your bedroom. You'll have a great deal of privacy because your spacious, quiet 2-room suite (bedroom and sitting room) is on its own floor of a classic, early 20th century San Francisco cottage. If you and your travel companion want to sleep in separate rooms, your sitting room can be a second bedroom with a single futon on the floor.
Note: The staircase to your rooms is steep and narrow. Think Amsterdam!
The house is one block from the Mission District, San Francisco's hippest neighborhood, with hundreds of restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs, unique shops, and galleries. It's a 10-minute walk to the subway station, then a 10-minute train ride to all the downtown tourist destinations. Free breakfast cereal, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, and snacks.
You'll share the bathroom (down a steep flight of stairs from your suite) with me. You're always welcome in the dining room and living room. If you'd like to stay home and watch a movie one night, there's a 50-inch HDTV with Netflix streaming movies in the living room. Also, you'll have access to fully equipped kitchen and a beautiful garden. Strong Wi-Fi.
Interaction with Guests
If you don't know San Francisco well, I'll pull out maps and offer insider tips on what to see, including places only locals know about. I'll also explain the complex public transportation system.
Some guests want a great deal of privacy, with minimal interaction. Others enjoy sharing conversation over a cup of coffee. I'm completely comfortable either way. I take my cue from the guest.
My neighborhood, Bernal Heights, is a village on a hill above the Mission District, which is a lively, colorful, hip part of the city. My home is on a charming, quiet, residential cul-de-sac with almost no auto traffic. The neighborhood is safe. This is the warmest, sunniest part of San Francisco.
BART (our subway system) is 6 short blocks from the house. Then it's a 10-minute train ride to the cable cars, Union Square stores, theater district, and other major downtown destinations. My home is a 15-minute bus ride to the Castro neighborhood, the center of gay life.
It's easy and inexpensive to take BART from both the San Francisco and Oakland airports. I'll pick you up at the nearby BART station. If you have a car, know that parking can be difficult at night; but you can usually find a place within 2 or 3 blocks.
Other Things to Note
Very LGBT friendly. Everyone is welcome here.
Please don't smoke in the house. But it's fine to smoke on the back porch or in the garden.
Our experience in San Francisco was the best ever in air bnb at the moment!! Matthew was a great host, he picked us up near the metro station when we arrived and gave us very and many useful information about the city. He suggested a bike tour to The Golden Gate Bridge and lots of other places to visit. The house is located up a little hill, about 10 minutes walking to the metro (BART) and there are also few busses next to the house. There is also a very nice grocery store nearby, and we where able to cook our dinners. Matthew offered us food for breakfast and fruit! Everything was perfectly clean and tidy.
Our stay with Matthew was an delight. His place was in a great location, clean, comfortable and lovely to spend time in. Matthew certainly deserves his Super Host status. He spent a lot of time explaining the areas and sights of the city (to give us a local's experience) and made sure we had an enjoyable stay. We would definitely recommend and hope to be back one day.
Matthew is very friendly and was a fantastic host with exceptional attention to detail. He made us feel very welcome and comfortable in his home which made the stay very easy. He does have a good knowledge of the area and his tips were helpful.
We would recommend him and his place to others travelling as he has a beautiful home with space and privacy as required, especially as he leaves the top floor of the house to his guests.
The view was amazing from the bedroom and his home is beautiful. We would stay again if we were in the area.
There was everything available that we needed and no restrictions on usage in his home.
Matthew is an extraordinary host. He is a very attentive and helpful person with a good knowledge of human nature. He has a great sense of making people feel comfortable at his place and he is also very respectful to their privacy. I came to SF on my own and he made me feel at home right away. He gave me interesting insights into the city’s history and current local topics and we had some exciting conversations.
The place itself is very clean and cozy. It’s located at the foot of Bernal Heights from where it is only a five minute walk to Valencia Street and to the heart of the Mission District. A ten minute walk will take you to 24th BART station which’ll easily connect you to the other parts of the city.
I hope that I’ll get the chance to stay at Matthew’s place again. It has been a great pleasure!
Our experience with Matthew was better than most hotels. Truly. The house was charming, beautifully decorated and in a nice quiet neighborhood just a few minutes walk from the Mission.
We had the entire upper floor to ourselves, which included a bedroom in the back of the house and a sunny sitting room in the front. The view from our room was scenic, exactly how it appears in the picture, overlooking the neighborhood with views all the way to downtown. The front room got a lot of sunlight and was a great place to relax in the morning while sipping coffee. If you’re lucky, you can even spot hummingbirds flying around the back garden and in the street out front.
Matthew thought of everything and he made us feel very welcome and comfortable. He was a friendly, hassle-free host. He graciously offered to pick us up from the BART (metro system) when we arrived in SF, even though he really did not have to, so this was a great welcome for us! He helped us make the most of our trip by showing us where to find the fun places, scenic places, tourist areas and even where to steer clear of at night.
Some things that awaited us in the house: a pitcher of water with 2 glasses on the dresser, earplugs (though we never needed them), a fact sheet about the neighborhood and getting around the city, robes, towels, and even some toiletries.
This was our first time using AirBnB and, as I told Matthew before we left, he may have spoiled us for all future stays!
Where do I start in reviewing the most wonderful place and host? Every aspect of the experience was utterly pleasant and enjoyable. There's very good reason that Matthew has perfect 5 star reviews - because everything is perfect! His thoughtfulness, kindness, attention to detail, and lovely personality really made my stay a treat. His place is immaculately clean, and a tasteful, peaceful, quiet haven offering great rest and respite - perfect for unwinding and getting ample rest in between exploring the city. The bed is really conducive to great sleep, too! The neighbourhood feels very safe, and is also very lively and has great restaurant and bar options for a quick jaunt
Matthew is the best host one could ask for, who really has a knack for it. He picked me up from the station, gave me plenty of insider knowledge on the city, and although I was travelling solo for the first time, with him I felt very comfortable and safe. He is very diligent with communication, ensuring everything is on track. I honestly cannot recommend this place highly enough - this is definitely my go-to anytime I'm next in San Francisco. If I could rate more than 5 stars, I would!
I cannot say enough about how great Matthew is as a host and as a person! He is the most caring and hospitable person I have ever met in my entire life and he made me feel like I was his family member during the entire stay. Besides, he has impeccable taste for everything; his home has very sophisticated yet comfortable ambience with tasteful decors and I didn't even want to go out for sightseeing because I felt so relaxed and comfortable at home. I loved local coffee shops, clothe shop, and organic supermarket Matthew recommended because he has real information which only locals know and he was always willing to share that with me! For that reason, I was able to enjoy true San Francisco as if I was living there instead of doing all the touristy things. I will definitely stay at Matthew's home again when I visit San Francisco in the future. Thank you Matthew from the bottom of my heart, and I cannot wait to see you again.
