2-Room Suite, Views, Prime Location

House - Private room · Lundys Lane, San Francisco, CA 94110, United States

Wow: Spectacular view from your large, sunny, quiet, 2-room suite. Privacy: You’re on your own floor. Fun: In the Mission District, featuring SF’s most popular restaurant & nightlife scene. Convenience: Very close to excellent public transportation.

The Space

Enjoy the privacy of your own quiet, 2-room, 360 square-foot suite on your own floor of my 111 year-old Edwardian cottage in a village in the Mission District. Bernal Heights is one of San Francisco’s most charming neighborhoods. Your bedroom has a spectacular, panoramic view of 8 neighborhoods and a direct view of the highest of the city’s legendary hills. The shared bathroom and common areas of the house are on the first floor, down a flight of stairs from your suite.

From my home, you can walk to nearly 100 cafes, restaurants, shops, bars and clubs in the vibrant Mission District — including the hippest stretch of Valencia Street. This area is perhaps San Francisco’s most popular and fun destination for locals and tourists alike. It is also the center of nightlife for straight men and women in their 20s and 30s.

My gay-welcoming home is in the most public-transportation-centric corner of Bernal Heights: 7 short blocks to the subway (BART) and within 4 blocks of 5 major Muni (bus and streetcar) lines.
• Within 20 minutes, you can get to downtown/Union Square, the cable cars, the Symphony Hall, Opera House, SOMA, Moscone Center, the Financial District, the Ferry Building, the Embarcadero and the Castro neighborhood.
• Within 40 minutes, you can get to Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, Japantown, Golden Gate Park, the California Academy of Sciences, the deYoung Museum and many other popular tourist destinations.

Your 2-room guest suite works equally well for 2 friends who want to sleep in separate rooms — one on a futon — as for individual guests and couples. You’ll have your own set of keys, so you can come and go as you please.

While always available with insider knowledge to help you have a great visit to San Francisco, I fully respect your privacy. You are as welcome to spend your time upstairs in your private suite as to join me downstairs for an evening movie on the 50-inch HDTV.

• Large, private, sunny, quiet, 2-room guest suite on its own floor of a beautiful Edwardian home.
• Views! A stunning, panoramic city view from your bedroom. Look out on a 19th century farmhouse from your sitting room.
• Excellent public transportation: 20 minutes from the front door to downtown.
• A safe urban village in the dynamic Mission District.
• Walking distance to nearly 100 cafes, restaurants and shops as well as to the city’s hippest nightlife area for young people.
• A 10-minute bus ride to the lively and historic Castro neighborhood gay scene.
• Excellent coffee every morning. Cafes and supermarkets nearby for breakfast.
• Technology: Strong WiFi. Sophisticated home theater/media center.
• Reduced-allergen environment: No pets. No smoking inside. Allergy-free bedding covers. Hypoallergenic detergent for sheets and towels.
• An economical choice for 2 friends who want to sleep in separate rooms.
• Beautiful, lush, private garden.
• A welcoming host who respects your privacy and is eager to help you enjoy all that San Francisco has to offer.

Your accommodations are on the second, and top, floor of my home. The larger of your 2 rooms, the bedroom, is flooded with sunlight all day. It’s also quiet, thanks to double-pane windows. Recently renovated and painted, this room is handsomely furnished with a full-size platform bed, high-end mattress, bedside table, dresser, desk & chair, bookcase, full-length mirror, overhead lighting and 2 good reading lamps — 1 on the headboard. It also has a large closet.

Your adjoining sitting room — also very sunny and quiet all day — is simply and comfortably furnished: 2 easy chairs, a coffee table, a floor lamp, reading lamp and bookcase. A single foam futon (29” x 75”), stored in the closet, can be set up so you and a travel companion can sleep in separate beds. Both your rooms have wall-to-wall carpet.

The bathroom, which you share with me, is on the first floor, where my bedroom and office are located, as well as the shared living room, dining room and kitchen. Bathrobes are provided, as are quality towels, bed linens and blankets.
Please note: The staircase between your private suite upstairs and the bathroom and common area downstairs is steep and narrow: Think Amsterdam.

You’re always welcome in the stylishly furnished common area. The living room features a sophisticated home theater/media center with a 50-inch, flat-screen, plasma HDTV, Blu-ray DVD player and access to 100s of Netflix streaming movies. Feel free to join me here to watch a film in the evening.

In the fully stocked kitchen, you’re welcome to cook your own meals. Or heat up excellent, inexpensive home delivery/carry-out from the many nearby ethnic restaurants. Either way, you'll find beautiful plates, serving dishes and cutlery for your use.

There’s a powerful shower, plenty of hot water and Ralph Lauren towels. You’ll have a large shelf in the medicine cabinet for your toiletries and you’ll find a good selection of items in case you forget something.

No part of Bernal Heights is as close to as many excellent public transportation options as the northwest slope:
• The 24th Street BART station (subway) is 7 short blocks away.
• There are 4 major bus lines and a busy streetcar line within 4 blocks.
You can quickly get to many of San Francisco’s most popular destinations directly on one of these six major public transportation lines. You can get virtually everywhere else in the city with one transfer.

The San Francisco "Chronicle" described Bernal Heights as “a quaint urban village of about 25,000 people known for its liberal politics, offbeat charm and warm weather.”

There are scores of exciting restaurants at all price points within easy walking distance — from genuine, no-frills taquerias to fine dining meccas revered by foodies worldwide.

A large supermarket is 2 blocks away. Also within easy walking distance: a 24-hour ATM; a large drugstore; an excellent laundry service/dry cleaners, a great ice cream shop and a post office.

There’s plenty of free street parking in front of my home during the day. Evenings can be difficult — especially late at night — but you can usually find a place within 2 or 3 blocks.

WEEKLY GUESTS (7 nights or more)
• Free access to a washer/dryer on site.
• The $25 cleaning fee is waived.

I genuinely enjoy welcoming guests into my home and sharing my intimate knowledge of San Francisco, accumulated over 35 years — 32 of them living in this house. I’m a writer, and I work from home. So I’m here most of the time to answer your questions and offer friendly suggestions. I make every effort to adapt my hospitality to what I sense each guest prefers. You are as welcome to immerse yourself in the privacy of your upstairs suite as to join me for conversation over a cup of coffee in the garden.

If you like what you’ve read about my accommodations, please get in touch. I’ll answer all your questions, both about my accommodations and about San Francisco.
Ciao, Matthew
P.S. I’m thrilled to have received top ratings from all my guests — not only those from AirBnB, but also guests who have booked longer stays through language schools. You can read all their comments in the “Reviews” and “Friends” sections.

Guest Access

Strong Wi-Fi. You’re always welcome to use the well-equipped kitchen, the beautifully furnished dining room and living room, which features a sophisticated home theater. Relax in the lush, private garden—a quiet oasis from city life. Guests who stay 7 nights or more have free access to an on-site washer/dryer.

Interaction with Guests

I take my cue from guests. Some want a great deal of privacy with minimal interaction. Others enjoy sharing conversation and a glass or wine, or watching a movie together on the 50-inch HDTV. I'm completely comfortable either way.

The Neighborhood

Although I am just 2 blocks from the Mission District, my neighborhood is called Bernal Heights. It's a hill above the Mission District. It's a charming, quiet, safe residential neighborhood. Many people call it a village within San Francisco.

Getting around

BART (our subway system) is a 10-minute walk from my home. Then it's a 10-minute train ride to Union Square and other major downtown destinations. My home is within 4 blocks of 5 major MUNI bus & streetcar lines. You can get almost everyone in San Francisco, and the larger Bay Area, from here.

  • I arrived at Matthew’s place a bit worse for wear thanks to several days travel with a bad back. Over tea and conversation in his sunny living room, Mathew helped me find a massage therapist that night at a Korean Spa he knew. The next day, I reached another therapist whom Matthew had found on line with great Yelp reviews. I wish I could report that my back was fixed on the spot: it was not. But having a helpful host who also escorted me to his favorite coffee shop (Coffee Shop on Mission — must for coffee snobs like me), offered restaurant recommendations, set me up in a great room with a knock-out view of the Mission and Twin Peaks, sure as hell eased my pain. Matthew is a terrific host. His place is in a wonderful, classic SF neighborhood worlds away from tourists and the traps set for them. Thank you, Matthew. I hope I’ll have occasion to return in the not too distant future.

  • I stayed at Matthew's place for seven weeks and enjoyed every single day. Matthew is a very warm and considerate host, offering bright rooms with a stunning view in a great neigborhood.I could not have chosen any better place for my visit to San Francisco and the bay area.

  • Staying with Matthew was the perfect start to our three-week vacation in the US. Not only has he been a wonderful host who literally thought of everything, but he was very accommodating when it came to unexpected changes to our travel plans. If you're looking for a home away from home in San Francisco Matthew and his beautiful house provide exactly for that. Thank you, Matthew!

  • Matthew was a great host. He made our stay very comfortable and had many suggestions on things to do in the city. His place is in a great part of town, easy walking distance to lots of bars, cafes, etc. I would stay there again, and recommend it highly!

  • Matthew was a wonderful host with a fantastic house in a great location. The bedroom and living room have a panoramic view of the city, and the house is easy walking distance to bus and train lines. The neighborhood has lots of food options too, one of the most important things when planning any trip. We'll keep Matthew's house on our (very) short list of places to stay in SF.

  • My friend and I stayed with Matthew for 8 nights and we had a great time. The Mission District where he lives is really cool, away from the touristy downtown slightly but it's easy and quick to get in on the BART. The area has loads of amazing places to eat and lots of cool bars within walking distance as well.

Matthew's place is really nice, it has a great view out over the city and is very clean. You get the whole of the top floor and Matthew makes a real point of making sure that you feel like this is completely your space for the time you stay.

My friend that I was staying with was female but were not together so we had separate rooms, she took the double bed and I had a futon in the other room. It worked out really well as it was nice to each have our own space and we never had any problems sleeping.

Finally, Matthew himself is an excellent host who's always happy to chat and give advice or leave you to do your own thing if that's what you want. I very welcoming host, I would definitely recommend staying with him.

  • We had a three night vacation in San Francisco and Matthew helped turn it from a good vacation to a great vacation. His knowledge of the area, warmth, and cheerful nature made us feel right at home right away. He also shared some local knowledge and wisdom that helped us to save money on booking activities and showed us the local culture. Matthew loves what he does and it shows!

  • We enjoyed our stay with Matthew. He's a great host, and his charming Victorian home has about the best view you could imagine of the south part of San Francisco. He had a welcoming glass of wine or a beer in the evenings, and tea and coffee in the mornings. The second story two room suite is quiet and private with the shared bath downstairs. It is located in Bernal Heights quite close to our son's place in the Mission, and the BART. It's also close to a grocery store for breakfast supplies and other essentials. A great stay!

  • Matthew is a very kind person and a wonderful host. Being new to San Francisco, he made us feel at home in this amazing city right away. He was very helpful and communicative, from pre-arrival travel tips to sightseeing advice to having fun and interesting conversations. While I really enjoyed getting to know Matthew, he also respected our privacy, so it was the best of both worlds! His house is amazing too, very characteristic and comfortable. Besides the nice and spacious rooms we really enjoyed the balcony looking over the city. Sharing the bathroom was no problem at all, especially since it was super clean and Matthew is very considerate with his guests' needs. I can safely recommend Matthew to anyone who needs a nice and comfortable place to stay in this beautiful city, for shorter or longer term.

For me, the big surprise is how much I enjoy putting up travelers in my home. I never expected it to be a source of such happiness. But it is. And that’s true whether I’m hosting a 22-year-old Brazilian man who speaks little English, a 50-year-old woman from New York rediscovering San Francisco after 20 years or a young gay couple from Vancouver here for a weekend date. It’s fun to tap my insider knowledge of San Francisco to help you have a wonderful visit. It’s an extraordinary city in many ways! You’ll find stunning natural beauty, world-famous landmarks, abundant cultural choices, terrific restaurants and moderate temperatures in an urban environment that’s small-scale, easy to navigate, great for walking, famously liberal and — yes, it’s true — a bit eccentric. Another big plus: You don’t need to spend a lot of money to have a great time here. I’ll be glad to tell you how.
