Gay friendly. Stunning view from your large, sunny, quiet, 2-room suite. Privacy on your own floor of a beautifully furnished Edwardian house in the Mission district. 20 minutes downtown by subway. Easy walk to dozens of restaurants, bars.
Enjoy a spectacular view of the highest of San Francisco's legendary hills from your bedroom. You'll have a great deal of privacy because your spacious, quiet 2-room suite (bedroom and sitting room) is on its own floor of a handsome cottage built in 1902. If you and your travel companion want to sleep in separate beds, I'll put a very comfortable single futon on the floor of your sitting room.
Note: The staircase to your rooms is steep and narrow. Think Amsterdam!
My home is one block from the Mission District, San Francisco's hippest neighborhood, with hundreds of restaurants, cafes, bars, interesting shops, and galleries. It's a 10-minute walk to the subway station, then a 10-minute train ride to all the downtown tourist destinations. Free breakfast cereal, fresh fruit, coffee, tea and snacks.
You'll share the bathroom (down a steep flight of stairs from your suite) with me. You're always welcome in the living room and dining room. Also, you'll have access to fully equipped kitchen and a beautiful garden. Strong Wi-Fi.
Interaction with Guests
Some guests want a great deal of privacy, with minimal interaction. Others enjoy sharing conversation over a glass of wine. I'm completely comfortable either way. I take my cue from the guest.
My neighborhood, Bernal Heights, is a village on a hill above the Mission District, which is a lively, colorful, hip part of the city. Just one block from the Mission District, my home is on a charming, quiet, residential cul-de-sac with very little auto traffic. The neighborhood is safe. This is the warmest, sunniest part of San Francisco.
BART (our subway system) is 7 short blocks from my home. Then it's a 10-minute train ride to the cable cars, Union Square stores, theater district, and other major downtown destinations. My home is a 15-minute bus ride to the Castro neighborhood, the center of gay life. It's easy and inexpensive to take the subway from both the San Francisco and Oakland airports. I'll pick you up at the nearby subway station. If you have a car, know that parking can be difficult at night; but you can usually find a place within 2 or 3 blocks.
Other Things to Note
Very LGBT friendly, many gay couples have enjoyed staying here. Nearly every guest who has stayed here---about 60---has given me a five star (highest rating) review.
Please don't smoke in the house. But it's fine to smoke on the back porch or in the garden.
Matthew is really a great host! He welcomed me in person and showed me the house - which is a great space, very clean and well-cared for - and made me feel at home. Though I really spent very little time in the house because I was in SF to attend a conference, I always felt like I could make myself at home and use the whole shared space. The bathroom and kitchen were spotless and well-appointed. The living spaces I rented were also more than enough space for me and I could easily see myself returning with a guest.
A friend and I came into the area both having never been to California, and we made the great decision to stay with Matthew! Matthew is an incredible host and did everything possible to make us feel at home from the time he picked us up from the train station! Upon sitting down for a cup of coffee after getting situated, Matthew gave us a great overview of the city and all the ways to get around! Matthew also gave us some great suggestions on things to do, as well as helping us go about things we had planned to do. Matthew was also nice enough to let us have a couple of glasses of wine with him, which made us feel even more like we were staying with an friend!
Matthew's house is great and offers great amenities as well as spectacular views! The beds were comfortable, and the bedrooms also offered enough space. There was always some fruit laying around to munch on, as well as snacks, and great coffee. Also, you've got to be sure to take some time to have some coffee or beer/wine in Matthew's garden. It was so peaceful! The house is also situated just minutes from great food, lively bars, and access to all public transportation. We had no safety or security issues walking all around at any hour. I will definitely not hesitate to return here any time I am back in the city!
Danke Matthew!
Being at the edge of Bernal Heights ended up being a fantastic location that’s super close to The Mission, which is a really cool neighborhood with a lot to do and see. Despite being in the same home as the host, the 2-room suite is definitely very private, occupying a full floor that you get all to yourself. One of the rooms is a really nice sitting room if you want to do some morning or nighttime reading.
Matthew was also a really great host. He was extremely kind and generous to let us into his home, and is talkative and respectfully conversational. He also gave us some good suggestions for places to go while we waited to be shown around town by my brother. Thank you again for letting us stay with you, Matthew!
Our stay at Matthew's was an excellent experience. I was visiting the area with my sister, and the two rooms provided on the second floor offered the perfect amount of privacy as well as terrific views of the City, (the pictures provided on the rental profile are quite accurate). The rental was within a short walking distance of the Mission District and BART public transport. Parking was also an option, although we did not utilize that perk. Matthew was both generous and respectful, and we were both happy to have had him as a host.
It was my first air B&B experience and it was superb. Location was great. Enjoyed the stroll to the train station which took me to all over of San Francisco. The room was spacious, clean and has the best view. And the inclusions were far more than enough. I also appreciate how the host was very helpful in arranging my itinerary. I also enjoyed the privacy nonthat the suite afford me.
I'm happy to share my insider knowledge of San Francisco to help you enjoy your stay without spending a lot of money. I've lived here for decades, and I know the city very well. I'm a single man, a writer by profession.
