About This Listing
This is a licensed vacation rental guest room which is a part of our home located on canal in exclusive Kainalu Park just several lots from where President Obama vacations. It is the "balcony" room of two second story guest bedrooms, and has a patio balcony overlooking the canal. The room has a private bathroom accessible from within the room, air conditioning, a queen size bed and cable TV. WiFi Internet is provided at no charge; reception for it is best from downstairs common areas. There is an exterior access to the room apart from our regular access to the house. There is a shared kitchenette and laundry area. Downstairs common areas include large lanai with ping pong table (see if U can beat us in doubles!). Over 250' of great canal frontage provides idyllic viewing of kayakers and turtles. Private gated beach access is a short walk around the block.
Two person per room limit. Sorry, young children not allowed due to our unique staircase which has widely spaced vertical support poles.
We do not provide meals nor snacks, but do provide complimentary canned juices, coffee and tea. There is no daily maid service but requests are honored for changing of linens/towels.
See our other Airbnb listings for "interior" room and both rooms rented together.
Rate includes 9.25% "room tax" and 4.7% "sales tax" that we are required to pay to state.
Please note higher holiday rates Dec 15 - Jan 5.
Note: When President Obama is "in residence" in the neighborhood, traffic fronting the property is occasionally put into lockdown for motorcade movements.
There is a very good public bus system for the entire island. Nearest bus stop is a 10 minute walk from property.
The neighborhood is very exclusive so guests are asked to conduct themselves accordingly. No ping-pong or other significant noise after 10 pm, especially on lanai.
Visitors of guests are not allowed on property without our specific permission.
Doug and Bird went above and beyond our expectations as hosts! They were extremely friendly and welcoming. We had so much fun getting to know them (and their turtles!) and appreciated their recommendations for our trip. They also shared many of their beach toys and gear with us---snorkels, boogie boards, beach chairs, and kayaks!
The room was clean, quiet and private, and was stocked with everything we needed. The shared kitchenette is directly across the hall and was also well stocked (they even kept juices in the fridge for us!). We used the kitchen several times to make simple meals during our stay.
Finally, the location was very convenient! The neighborhood is quiet and safe, and their home is a block away from a beautiful (and not too crowded) beach. We also enjoyed being close to Kailua where there are lots of cute restaurants, shops, and a Sunday farmers market.
We highly recommend staying with Doug and Bird! We'll definitely be back next time we travel to Oahu.
I am very happy that we chose this place for our first trip to Hawaii. The experience was awesome! We felt like we were staying with friends. Doug and Bird made us feel really welcomed, made sure we had everything we needed. The place was exactly as described, the neighbourhood was quiet, safe and cosy. Doug found time to tell us about nearby places to visit. He was so generous to lend us great snorkeling gear, boogie boards, and even a two-persons kayak (which he washed himself with the words "I'll do it, you relax, you are on a vacation" after we returned -- how cool is that?!!!). He invited us on the BBQ party with his friends on Friday's evening and we had a really fun time with them. I can go on indefinitely and tell you more about how unbelievably great are the views from the balcony, how cute are Doug's and Bird's 3 turtles, how airy the room is and how great we slept there... This is our #1 place on Oahu now. We will definitely be back and will tell all our friends about this place.
Doug and Bird were very welcoming from the moment I arrived. Upon arrival Doug gave me a tour of the house, was happy to answer any questions, and gave some great tips on things to do and see. They knew I would be hanging out with my friends, who were staying elsewhere, but extended the invitation for me to join them for a drink when I arrived home in the evenings. Throughout my stay they checked in on my needs without being obtrusive in any way. There were always drinks, something in the fridge, and a kind word. They even had plenty of beach gear to loan. I completely understand why the reviews were so great. The room itself was clean and comfortable, including AC and cable, not that I spent much time in the room. These are not luxury accommodations, so if that is what you want then you should stay in a hotel in Wakiki, however, it was a warm, clean and inviting place to stay, complete with laundry access, clean towels and toiletries. I needed only a swimsuit and some clothes. Finally, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! The house was literally a block from the private beach entrance, which was paradise in a nut shell. An easy bike or car ride to town, and had a wonderful view off the balcony overlooking the canal.
I am sure if I head back to Kailua I will arrange to stay with these great folks again! It was a great trip!
We arrived at Doug and Bird's house on New Year's Eve at around 10 pm and their friends had gathered in the common area to celebrate the incoming year. Instead of feeling like intruding outsiders, we immediately felt at ease. Doug and Bird introduced us to everyone, helped us with our luggage, showed us our room and invited us, our son and his girlfriend, who we were in Hawaii to visit, all to grab a seat, grab a drink, and join them. From that moment all the way through our two weeks, we felt welcomed, at home and like old friends.
The room was just as advertised, with a wonderful view looking out over the canal and a great kitchen and laundry for preparing coffee, breakfast and snacks. Having our coffee in the morning, we were able to watch the crew boats go by, read, and generally relax. We were there to visit and do some home projects with our son, who lives about a mile away, so each morning he would pick us up for breakfast. Doug was always available as we were waiting, to tell us of the latest POTUS news (he was staying nearby for a few days) point out the turtles, and again, make us feel at home.
Once our home projects were done, Doug and Bird allowed us to use their bikes (he took us on a tour of the neighborhood and the many beaches), their kayaks (we paddled out into the ocean for a real treat), and their neighbors let my husband use and give them some lessons on their new paddleboard. One day we all went to the private beach a few steps away and had as much fun as if we were with our dear old friends. Another day Doug set up a TV out in the common area so we all could watch the playoffs while eating breakfast....their neighbors are great cooks and treated us to fresh fish caught on their boat.
I could go on and on because there were so many wonderful moments. We toured the island and spent lots of time with our son, but even he also enjoyed meeting and spending time at Doug and Bird's place....especially the ping pong challenges!
We feel like we found kindred spirits in Doug, Bird and their wonderful friends!
We will return again.
Doug and Bird!
Thank you for everything you have done for us.We enjoyed the stay here in Hawaii and the stay here at your place was very different from one we had so far. Sound of canal water, gentle breeze and sound from coconut trees, canal view from our room. We had a very happy holiday here.
Thank you again and we will come back again!
Doug & Bird, Thank you so much for your hospitality. I really enjoyed staying at your place. The room was exactly as listed, however the views were way better.... The location was so convenient to everything in the area and I really appreciate you letting me use a bicycle and kayak. That really meant so much.
I hope to come back and stay with you guys someday.

About the Host, Doug
I am a lifetime Kailua resident. Live with wife, Bird, where we own and manage our vacation rental as part of our home. Retired from police department, I stay busy maintaining this and other rental properties in Kailua, doing most upkeep on my own. I stay active with slow-pitch softball, tennis, kayaking and ping-pong.
