House - Private room · Kailuana Pl, Kailua, HI 96734, United States

The Space

This is a licensed vacation rental guest room which is a part of our home located on canal in exclusive Kainalu Park just several lots from where President Obama vacations. It is the "balcony" room of two second story guest bedrooms, and has a patio balcony overlooking the canal. The room has a private bathroom accessible from within the room, air conditioning, a queen size bed and cable TV. WiFi Internet is provided at no charge; reception for it is best from downstairs common areas. There is an exterior access to the room apart from our regular access to the house. There is a shared kitchenette and laundry area. Downstairs common areas include large lanai with ping pong table (see if U can beat us in doubles!). Over 250' of great canal frontage provides idyllic viewing of kayakers and turtles. Private gated beach access is a short walk around the block.

Two person per room limit. Sorry, young children not allowed due to our unique staircase which has widely spaced vertical support poles.

We do not provide meals nor snacks, but do provide complimentary canned juices, coffee and tea. There is no daily maid service but requests are honored for changing of linens/towels.

See our other Airbnb listings for "interior" room and both rooms rented together.

Rate includes 9.25% "room tax" and 4.7% "sales tax" that we are required to pay to state.

Please note higher holiday rates Dec 15 - Jan 5.

Note: When President Obama is "in residence" in the neighborhood, traffic fronting the property is occasionally put into lockdown for motorcade movements.

  • Staying at Doug's and Bird's lovely house was like staying with dear friends - except having the privacy that I really appreciated on my de-stress holiday on Oahu.

The house and the balcony room were perfect and all I needed and the location - oh boy... Still remembering my early morning jogging at the nearby Kailua beach, which is one of the best and tidiest on the island.

I d definitely come back on my next stay In Oahu.

  • There are two reasons you should stay here:1. it's a fantastic location just minutes from one of the best beaches in the world and 2. because Doug and his wife are very kind and hospitable people who go out of their way to make sure you have a good stay.
    Go and enjoy!

  • Doug and Bird were great hosts, very friendly and helpful. The bedroom and the private bathroom were clean and comfortable and there is a kitchen with everything you need to prepare your own food. There are also a washer and a dryer that can be used. The house is in a very nice and peaceful area right at the canal. We also had access to a beautiful private beach area.
We would definitively recommend staying with Doug and Bird!

  • We enjoyed our stay with Doug and Bird, their place is lovely and well located and we had a nice talk with both of them!
The room with attached private bathroom was clean and confortable and there is a kitchen, washing machine and dryer that can be used during the stay.
Doug and Bird are very friendly hosts and we hightly recommend their place in Kailua, peaceful and quiet.

  • Doug and Bird were great hosts, friendly and informative without infringing on your privacy.
The house is in a very nice location, about 3 minute walk to gorgeous beach, fronting on to a canal. The canal view room is spacious, matress is super comfortable, with private balcony and bathroom. Shared kitchen area was well appointed with everything required to cook basic meals.
We stayed 2 nights, 3 or 4 would have been better as it's a quick drive to many interesting areas of the island. Or just spend your days walking along Kailua beach!
Would definitely return next time we are on the Island.

  • Doug is the nicest person on Earth!!! We stayed at his canal side balcony room for 3 days. His place is a fun, cool, venue to hang out at with table tennis, kayaks, a fridge, washer and drier, snorkeling equip, etc. He was always around to help out with questions we had and checking in to make sure everything was going well. We were there for a wedding and busy with things around that so couldn't hang out as much as we would have liked unfortunately.

It is close to major highways and a 5 minute drive to Lanikai Beach. Ample parking with a good cable TV and A/C. The view of the canal from the balcony is awesome! I can't recommend his place more highly and Doug's graciousness really puts this place in the 5 start range. A model airbnb host. Thanks so much Doug!!!!

  • Firstly Doug and Birdie were great hosts!
They are very welcoming and gracious during our visit to beautiful Kailua.
The room is a standard clean room with enclosed bathroom, balcony and air conditioning unit. A comfortable 2 nights stay.
During our stay we were able to use beach chairs, boogie boards and bikes to ride into town. Of course there were the kayaks which we didnt have time to use.
The house is a very short walk to an amazing beach! This is the main reason to be here. You can easily carry a boogie board, beach chair and days supplies for a day at the beach.
Try to wake up early one morning for the sunrise!

  • Doug and Bird were great hosts and very hospitable. I stayed in Kailua while working and had to change plans several times and they were great to work with. I would highly recommend staying with them to anyone. The area is wonderful - quiet and right on the canal. Spotted over 30 sea turtles one night. 5 Stars!

  • Doug & Bird were ideal hosts, even able to make accomodation while their home's roofing project was underway and at fairly short notice. We were so relieved to stay in their calm, peaceful neighborhood instead of the chaotic Waikiki regular hotel where we were originally booked. Even the TOWELS smelled good at this place. Lots of aloha and none of the nonsense, this was a great pick and I'm so glad we were able to stay here!

I am a lifetime Kailua resident. Live with wife, Bird, where we own and manage our vacation rental as part of our home. Retired from police department, I stay busy maintaining this and other rental properties in Kailua, doing most upkeep on my own. I stay active with slow-pitch softball, tennis, kayaking and ping-pong.
