The Space

Welcome to the Cottage at Olinda Bonsai ! Thank you for considering a stay with us! Its always humbling to be just a small part of the planning of vacation trips so WELCOME and we look forward to sharing our island lifestyle with you !

North Shore Maui is a great launching point for many activities, and a more laid back feel than the touristy sides of the island.

We are in a secluded neighborhood of 2 acre estates located on top of a hill and at the end of a cul-de-sac. This large two bedroom cottage with a ful kiltchen, spacious living room with its own sitting deck and spectacular ocean views. Unit also includes WIFI, TV, extensive book library washer and dryer and covered parking.

There is a Queen sized bed in the main bedroom and a single set up in the second room so sleeps 3 comfortably. Please check with us if booking more than 3 and we can adjust/discuss accordingly.

Please note we have a strict no smoking policy.

There are great places to go for a walk or run. A plus is that our location gives you a jump start to Hana before the others who are heading that way from the other parts of the island. The infamous Pe'ahi aka "Jaws" known for big wave surfing is just down the road.

There are many great walking trails both above us and below us, check with me and I'll get you pointed in the right direction. The infamous Jaws surf spot, Ho'okipa Beach and Twin Falls is located within a short distance. We are approximately 16 miles/25 minutes to/from the airport. and 5 min drive away from Haleakala Downhill bike shop !

Haiku has several small grocery stores within 3 miles from us- Hanzawa's, Fukushima and Haiku Market and in Paia, a great inexpensive organic healthfood store called Mana Foods. Haiku, Makawao and Paia have a great selection of eating places that we'll be glad to recommend!

Truthfully, we know how important vacation time is in our busy careers and families, and so we go the extra for our guests by encouraging our "On-Call" texting service to steer you in the right direction so you can tap into the often overlooked behind the scenes activities, whether its attending a Maui Arts and Cultural Center activity to a free booking at the Nature Center's Endangered bird sanctuary up in Hosmer's Grove at Mt. Haleakala, we've done it all. The previous guest feedback pretty much tell the underline woven story of the adventures that have come through our hill top place.

One last final note to add is that we are located on a tropical island in which there are bugs, insects and such everywhere even in the best resorts and condos, though we do our best to eliminate them or keep them at bay.

Come, relax and reconnect, sleep in and take nature walks, gentle conversations on life and redirection!

  • We were indeed sad to leave Hawaii with all the beauty of the land and the people. When we were looking for a place to stay at Maui, we decided not to go to any beach-front property but instead live in a place with character like a farm land. We were extremely pleased to stay at Olinda Bonsai. The cottage is very comfortable and charming. You can see the ocean from the deck you see in this picture. Perfect to have a morning cuppa of tea! This place is very close to the Hana highway. For those with small kids who cannot make it all the way through Hana highway, interesting lookouts are all within - an- hour driving distance on either side of the highway coming from the cottage. When we were in Maui, we could not meet Randy as he was out-of-town. April, more than made up for his absence. She made a extra bed for our 4 y.o daughter. She is very thoughtful and gracious. We were very happy we stayed here. We will stay here if we ever come back to Maui and will highly recommend this place for anyone passing by.

  • We stayed at this beautiful cottage in Feb and cannot recommend it or our friendly hosts highly enough. This well appointed and spacious cottage is well situated for the Hana Highway which is the must do road trip on Maui. There is a large TV and breakfast diner with all the self catering items you will ever need and a separate laundry room. Not that you will want to use any of it once you get all relaxed on the wonderful Lanai! Go for it! Book today! Maui is everything you have ever heard and so much more!

  • We enjoyed our stay at the Olinda Bonsai Cottage. The cottage is in a great location for sightseeing around Maui. The hosts, Randy and April are wonderful people; helpful, kind and extremely busy community members. They welcome you with a lovely basket of local produce, teas and homemade banana bread. It was delicious! The kitchen is large and fairly well equipped. There are basic linens and towels. The laundry is shared and clean.
We spent 8 nights at the Cottage. Being there that long, there are a few things that made our stay less than ideal.
    1. The cottage is on the wet side of Maui. It is humid and warm. There is no air conditioning, no ceiling fans, no floor fans and everything feels wet and sticky.
    2. It is the Tropics and you will know it. Little lizards come in for visits and interesting bugs, but they were harmless.
    3. You will be staying on the property of the hosts and they have 3 dogs that bark. With the windows open, it was not uncommon for us to be woken up several times a night by them. They start their day at 6 a.m.
    3. The neighbors driveway is on the main bedroom's side, and they take their kids to school early each morning. You will also hear every word they say and the car.
    4. There is a nice porch for sitting on, although one of the two porch chairs was broken. There is a table to sit at for a meal, but it is over sized and awkward to sit at.
These complaints are a consideration, not a deal breaker. The cottage shows it's wear. For the price, it is a good value, especially if your expectations are not unreasonable.

  • We enjoyed our stay and found it an ideal location from the airport, crater and Road to Hana. Randy and April were the perfect hosts: accessible, truly helpful and not at all intrusive.

  • A big thank you to April and Randy for sharing their wonderful cottage with us. It is such a nice and cozy place. Waking up to the sounds of birds in the morning, along with a view of the ocean from the balcony, was truly serene. They were only a phone call or text away if you had any questions. Thank you for the gift as well! We would definitely stay here again if the chance should arise.

  • We stayed for 10 days at Olinda with our 2 year old. Had a great time there, April and Randy were great hosts as all the previous reviews stated. It was a beautiful place, our kid enjoyed the green farm, dogs, rabbits and goats(next door).
One thing I would like to say is this is not just a great place to visit Hana but is ideal for the whole trip since most of the island is an easy drive away.

  • Lovely space and the deck was wonderful to sit out and paint.

  • Great hosts, great location for the Road to Hana and trips to Paia, very quiet and peaceful, an ideal place to relax. Short & simple: a good airbnb experience

  • Nice location with very kind hosts.
We two had a charming colonial-style cottage serving all our needs.
It is a perfect starting point for the famous road to Hana as well as for the sunrise tour to the Haleakala summit.
Nights were comfortable and very calm (no roosters!).
It was really a pity that we had to leave after just 2 nights to catch our flight to Big Island.
Highly recommended for nature lovers and those who prefer to be away from the crowd!

  • The setting is even more beautiful than the photos... and the big deck with ocean views is not to be missed! April and Randy were very kind and helpful.... April made the most delicious fresh orange juice! We couldn't recommend this place more highly! The wifi is very good which was important for us!

A small note, there are dogs near by that sometimes bark and you'll hear that occasionally, but they were inside and quiet at night.

About
We are the only designated Airbnb "Superhost" on the island of Maui operate as a self employed family who own and operate Olinda Bonsai & Ornamentals. It was a dream that we would someday have a farm-stay where people can come and stay and have the opportunity to be immersed in the art of bonsai. We are proud parents of 3 great kids. Two are away at college and one still in high school, so with all this plus the love and care for all our (small and friendly) dogs, cat, rabbits and, we keep pretty busy! In addition to keeping busy with the bonsai nursery, we also are importers of ceramic pottery and stock the stores here island wide. I am laid back, enjoy working in the yard on our extensive landscaping and totally enjoy connecting guests to what makes Maui a unique place. The beauty of Maui is one thing, the people here really make it special! Come as a guest, leave as a new friend you have on Maui!
